Eugene Kozlovsky describes an eight-level CSS system that simulates aging through opacity, desaturation, texture and layout changes while keeping the palette fixed. Its central design challenge is balancing a deteriorating screen with readable text and usable choices.
How the decay system maps to the story
Kozlovsky’s September 23, 2026 article describes eight interface levels, numbered 0 through 7, aligned with the game’s forty-day progression. The stages do not simply add darker colors: they alter the treatment of existing elements and introduce texture and spatial changes over time.

These are descriptions in the author’s article, not an independently inspected implementation. The progression’s design logic is nevertheless clear: early changes are restrained, then texture and geometry help make deterioration visible without relying only on color.
How to imply aging without adding colors
The article says NICHLYST enforces a five-color palette at build time: #1A1C1C, #2D3131, #7D7263, #BCB2A1 and #EDE6D8. Instead of expanding that palette with new shades, the described system simulates wear by changing how existing colors and elements appear: desaturation, opacity, palette-token substitution, SVG noise and gradients.

- Opacity and desaturation make secondary interface elements feel faded while preserving the palette’s source colors.
- Text effects, including an ink-bleed-like shadow and a slight blur on mood text, suggest deterioration in selected narrative elements.
- Texture adds a worn surface through SVG noise and, later, scan lines.
- Layout changes—a narrower column and wider letter spacing—make the late interface feel altered in ways that are not merely color shifts.
This approach treats palette consistency and visual aging as separate concerns: the system can change rendering, texture and composition without introducing additional palette tokens.
Where atmosphere must yield to usability
A decaying interface can undermine its own purpose if players cannot read story text or recognize an available choice. Kozlovsky says the implementation protects interactive choice controls from degradation that would compromise usability; at level 3, for example, buttons retain near-full opacity and receive no filter even as other parts of the screen change. The later hover glitch shows that controls are not necessarily untouched, but their treatment is selective.

The article also reports a contrast guard, mobile-specific effect adjustments and support for prefers-reduced-motion. It states contrast figures, but no independent accessibility audit is presented, so those values and safeguards should be understood as the author’s claims—not as verification that the game meets a particular accessibility standard. The practical design principle is to decide which interface elements may deteriorate and which must remain clear before applying effects globally.
Why the author moved away from chained filters
Kozlovsky reports that combining blur and drop-shadow filters caused thermal throttling in a budget Android WebView, citing a Redmi Note 9 Pro. He says the project replaced dynamic filter combinations with static noise tiles and pre-calculated opacity steps, reporting 60 fps on that device without thermal throttling; an AMD A4 laptop is also mentioned. The article does not provide a measurement protocol, raw performance data, a test duration for the revised build or independent replication, so these results are specific to the author’s account rather than a general benchmark.

The reported change illustrates a useful tradeoff for effect-heavy interfaces: a visually convincing effect need not be recalculated dynamically if a pre-composed texture or stepped value can produce the intended look. Whether static compositing is faster in another project depends on its rendering path, devices and implementation; Kozlovsky’s results do not establish a universal performance rule.

The article’s narrative thesis is that interface chrome should not remain unaffected while the world it presents deteriorates. In Kozlovsky’s words, “The UI is not separate from the story.” That idea turns visual decay from a late-stage filter into a progression with narrative timing: what changes, when it changes and what remains usable all carry meaning.

For designers adapting the concept, the most important architectural choice is to make decay staged and selective. A single dramatic effect may communicate damage, but an ordered progression—from fading secondary elements to texture and spatial distortion—can connect visual change to story time while reserving clarity for essential interaction.
