JoyStrum is a small browser-based guitar reference for looking things up while you practice. It puts open chord shapes, one C major scale path, a standard-tuning fretboard map, and a capo chart in one set of linked pages, and it asks for no account. It is not a guitar course, a tuner, or a virtual instrument, and nothing published about it measures whether it helps anyone learn.

Why the project exists

The project’s author describes the goal in a Devpost post as wanting “a guitar reference I could open in the browser while practicing: chord diagrams, a fretboard note map, one scale path, and a capo chart, without creating an account.” That is the problem JoyStrum is built around: quick answers during a practice session, not a structured lesson sequence. The wording comes from the post as it appeared in search results, so treat it as the author’s stated intent rather than a description of every current feature. For what the site currently offers, the official JoyStrum site is the primary source.

What is inside

JoyStrum has four lookup tools plus print views and reference sound. Each one is narrow by design.

Tool What it shows Documented scope
Chords Fingering, notes, reference tones, and a printable chart for each shape Eight common open shapes, including a C chord, A minor, and a C-to-A-minor change as starting points
Scale C major shown on a fretboard and in TAB, labelled with note names or scale degrees One path, C3 to C4 (one octave), seven notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B
Fretboard Note positions for each fret Standard tuning, low to high E, A, D, G, B, E; full reference through fret 24
Capo Forward transposition (chord shape to sounding chord) and reverse lookup (wanted chord to shape and fret) Capo transposition in both directions; home page example moves a shape from C to D at fret 2

Chords and the scale, linked

The most useful part of JoyStrum is that the pages refer to each other. A C chord is built from C, E, and G. The C major scale contains those same three notes, plus D, F, A, and B. Reading the chord and the scale side by side shows which scale notes sit inside a chord and which fall outside it, and the fretboard view lets you find each of those notes on the strings.

The scale is a single one-octave path. It does not cover other keys, other scale types, or positions higher on the neck, so it works as a worked example rather than a scale library.

Using the fretboard and the capo

The fretboard uses standard tuning, with the open strings low to high as E, A, D, G, B, E. Because the reference runs through fret 24, you can locate any note in that range on any string, though the site does not describe alternate tunings.

The capo tools work in two directions:

  • Forward: you enter a shape and a capo fret, and the chord that sounds is shown. The home page example moves a shape from C to D at fret 2, a two-semitone rise.
  • Reverse: you start with the chord you want to sound and get back a shape and fret that produce it.

Both directions rely on the same semitone arithmetic: each fret raises the pitch by one semitone, so a fret 2 capo raises everything by two.

Reference sound and printing

JoyStrum includes reference audio for its chord and scale views, and printable versions of the chord diagrams. The project’s own copy reads “Clear diagrams. Reference sound. No account needed.” That is product language from the project, not an independent evaluation. Published information does not say how the audio is generated, how it sounds on different speakers or headphones, or how it was checked for quality. Likewise, no testing across browsers or devices has been reported.

Saved references stay in your browser

The site says saved items remain in the current browser and do not use an account or cloud sync. That is the extent of what is documented. It does not tell you how the saving is implemented, how long saved items persist, or what data beyond them the site collects. Treat any broader privacy assumption as unverified and check the official site’s own privacy text before relying on it.

The browser technology behind it

Reference audio in a browser usually relies on the Web Audio API. MDN Web Docs describes the API as available across browsers since April 2021 (per its 2026 page update), while noting that some parts have varying support. The API covers audio contexts, nodes, routing, and output to speakers or headphones. The W3C specification describes further capabilities, including scheduled playback, live audio input, and sound synthesis in scripts. Those are platform features. No public source states which of them JoyStrum uses. In particular, nothing published establishes microphone input, a guitar-specific tone model, low-latency playback, offline use, or full compatibility across browsers.

What JoyStrum is not

  • Not a course. It offers no lesson sequence, progress tracking, or exercises.
  • Not a tuner. It shows where notes sit on the fretboard, but it does not listen to your guitar.
  • Not a virtual instrument. Its reference sound is for checking, not for playing.
  • Not evidence-backed teaching. No learning outcomes or user satisfaction data has been published.

How to compare it with other guitar references

If you are choosing between guitar references, these questions follow directly from the tasks above:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How many chord shapes are included, and do they cover the keys you play?
  • How many scale patterns are available, and what range do they cover?
  • Which tunings and how many frets does the fretboard show?
  • Does the capo tool work in both directions?
  • Do diagrams show notes and fingering?
  • Is reference audio included, and are there print views?
  • Does saving require an account or sync?

JoyStrum’s documented answers are eight open chords, one C major path, standard tuning through fret 24, capo transposition in both directions, reference sound, printable views, and browser-only saving. A reference with a larger chord library or more scales will answer the first two questions differently; one that needs an account will answer the last differently.

Using a physical capo with the charts

The browser reference does not require any purchase. If you want to try the capo results on a real guitar, a standard guitar capo is the only physical item the tool’s scope calls for. Clamp it at the fret the tool gives you and play the shape it shows to hear the transposed chord.

Limits of what is known

Most of what is established about JoyStrum comes from its official site, which describes its current scope. The project author’s account of the goal is taken from a Devpost post that was available only as a search-result excerpt. Platform details come from general browser API documentation, which describes what browsers can do, not how JoyStrum is built or how well it performs. Readers who need audio accuracy, device support, or privacy guarantees should check those points directly with the project.
