Build browser automation so routine steps run automatically, but the workflow stops before MFA or CAPTCHA handling, sensitive data entry, ambiguous actions, and consequential submissions. At each checkpoint, show a person the live browser state and the exact action waiting to happen; record their decision, then re-check the page before the automation resumes. For genuine takeover, the human and script must share the same live session—not separate browser copies.
What human-in-the-loop browser automation means
Human-in-the-loop automation is not simply a script that pauses for a generic “Continue?” prompt. It is a workflow in which a person can inspect the relevant browser context, handle a step that should not be automated, or approve or correct a proposed action—and the automation then resumes from the same session.
Cloudflare describes its Live View handoff as letting a human step into a live browser session to handle what automation cannot, then return control to the script. Its documented examples include MFA, SSO and CAPTCHA; sensitive credentials or personal information; complex one-off interactions; and verification such as order approval. The key design choice is to treat handoff as an explicit workflow state, not an accidental pause caused by a timeout or error.
Keep routine navigation deterministic where possible. Put a policy gate between the agent’s proposed actions and the browser controller. The gate should decide whether an action can run, needs human approval, requires a human to perform it, or must be refused. This separation makes it easier to explain and audit what the agent was allowed to do.

Decide which actions require a person
Use risk and reversibility—not merely whether an action is easy to automate—to set the pause rules. A good starting policy is to let low-risk navigation proceed while requiring a human for actions that disclose sensitive information, affect another person, spend money, change access, or are difficult to undo.
| Action class | Example | Suggested handling |
|---|---|---|
| Routine navigation | Opening a known page or moving through a read-only workflow | Allow automation; verify the visible result after important transitions. |
| Authentication challenge | MFA, SSO, or CAPTCHA | Pause and hand the live session to the authorized user. Do not ask the agent to defeat the challenge. |
| Sensitive information | Entering credentials or personal information | Require a person to enter or explicitly approve the specific data and destination. |
| Consequential action | Payment, sending a message, downloading sensitive material, or changing privileges | Show the exact action and relevant fields; require explicit approval, or have the person perform it. |
| Ambiguous or irreversible action | An unclear one-off interaction or final submission | Stop until a person clarifies the intent or confirms the proposed action. |
Approval should be specific. “Continue?” does not tell an operator what they are authorizing. Present the intended control or operation, the page origin, and the consequential values that matter—for example, recipient, amount, or permission change—without unnecessarily exposing secrets. Let the operator approve, edit or reject the proposal. For especially sensitive operations, the safest policy may be for the person to perform the action directly rather than grant the agent permission to do it.
Design the handoff and resume path
A reliable workflow makes the pause, takeover and return explicit. Cloudflare’s documented Live View workflow and Microsoft’s documented take-control workflows for Playwright workspaces illustrate the live-session handoff pattern. The exact interface and deployment depend on the service or environment you choose; a local confirmation prompt alone is not a live browser takeover.
- Stop at the policy gate. Do not queue further browser actions while a person is reviewing or controlling the session. Define what happens to pending work if the operator rejects the action or does not respond.
- Show useful context. Provide a controlled view of the same browser session, the page origin, the reason for the pause, and the proposed next action. Make cancel or reject easy to find. Avoid asking the operator to infer the task from a screenshot with no explanation.
- Constrain what the person can authorize. Present the action that the policy gate will actually execute, not a free-form summary supplied by page content or the agent alone. This matters because untrusted page text can influence an approval prompt.
- Record the decision. Store the proposed action, origin, relevant fields, operator identity, decision and timestamp. Apply your organization’s access and retention rules to screenshots, traces and logs, which can contain sensitive information.
- Re-check after takeover. Read the current page state again before resuming. The operator may have navigated elsewhere, a session may have expired, or the target control and its meaning may have changed. Confirm that the current page still matches the approved action.
- Resume narrowly. Continue only with the approved action and task-specific permissions. If the state is uncertain, the operator’s decision is missing, or the action no longer matches, pause again instead of guessing.
For recovery, define what the workflow does after rejection, cancellation, operator disconnect, session expiry or an uncertain submission. Some submissions cannot be safely retried: the first attempt may have succeeded even if the browser did not show confirmation. Treat that uncertainty as a review case, not permission to click again.

Build a policy gate with Playwright
Playwright is a practical browser-automation base; its official site describes support for browser automation for testing, scripting and AI agents across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Its best-practices guidance emphasizes checking user-visible behavior and isolating storage and related state. Applied to agent workflows, that means using a separate browser context for each task where appropriate, checking visible results, and avoiding assumptions based on stale selectors or hidden implementation details.
The following minimal Node.js example demonstrates a local checkpoint before a final action. It opens a visible browser, shows the operator the URL and button label, asks for an explicit approval, and checks the page and button again before clicking. It is an illustration of a policy gate, not a remote live-view handoff, and it deliberately does not automate login or CAPTCHA.
Install and run
- Install Node.js and create a project:
npm init -y. - Install Playwright:
npm install playwright, then install Chromium withnpx playwright install chromium. - Save the script below as
checkpoint.mjs. - Run
node checkpoint.mjs https://your-authorized-site.example/checkout. Replace the example with a page you are authorized to use; adapt the button label to the real workflow. The browser is headed so the operator can inspect it before answering.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { createInterface } from 'node:readline/promises';
import { stdin, stdout } from 'node:process';
const target = process.argv[2];
if (!target) {
console.error('Usage: node checkpoint.mjs https://authorized-site.example/path');
process.exit(2);
}
const parsed = new URL(target);
if (parsed.protocol !== 'https:') {
throw new Error('Refusing non-HTTPS target. Use an authorized HTTPS page.');
}
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: false });
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
const rl = createInterface({ input: stdin, output: stdout });
try {
await page.goto(target, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const submit = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Place order', exact: true });
const count = await submit.count();
if (count !== 1) {
throw new Error(`Expected one visible Place order button; found ${count}. No action taken.`);
}
await submit.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
const approvedOrigin = new URL(page.url()).origin;
const approvedLabel = await submit.innerText();
console.log(`Pending action: click “${approvedLabel.trim()}”`);
console.log(`Page origin: ${approvedOrigin}`);
const answer = await rl.question('Inspect the browser. Type APPROVE to proceed: ');
if (answer !== 'APPROVE') {
console.log('Not approved; no click performed.');
} else {
if (new URL(page.url()).origin !== approvedOrigin) {
throw new Error('Page origin changed during review; no action taken.');
}
const current = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Place order', exact: true });
if (await current.count() !== 1 || !(await current.isVisible())) {
throw new Error('Approved control changed or disappeared; no action taken.');
}
if ((await current.innerText()).trim() !== approvedLabel.trim()) {
throw new Error('Button text changed during review; no action taken.');
}
await current.click();
console.log('Action submitted. Verify the resulting page before treating the task as complete.');
}
} finally {
rl.close();
await context.close();
await browser.close();
}
This example only checks origin and button text; production approval should bind to the full action and relevant form values, not just a label. The script also closes its context when it exits, so it is not a session-persistence design. A real takeover system must preserve and expose the same live session through the human interaction, then make the updated state available to the controller. Never store or log secrets just to make a checkpoint convenient.
Secure the browser, session and approval record
Human approval does not make an overpowered browser agent safe by itself. Microsoft warns that giving browser agents credentials can expose access to email, financial, social or enterprise systems. Chrome’s guidance likewise recommends keeping a human in the loop and requesting confirmation when needed. Scope access to the task and account, and do not give a workflow broader permissions merely because it has a confirmation screen.

- Separate task sessions. Isolate cookies and storage between tasks where practical so one workflow does not inherit another’s state or failures. Keep session continuity within a task when takeover requires it.
- Protect credentials. Minimize the accounts and permissions available to the agent. Prefer a human completing authentication in the live session over copying an MFA code or password into an agent prompt or ordinary log.
- Defend against prompt injection. Treat page content as untrusted input. A webpage may ask the agent to ignore policy or frame a dangerous action as routine. The policy gate—not the page’s wording—must control whether an operation can run.
- Make approval auditable. Record who decided what and when, along with enough action context to explain the decision. Restrict access to the record and redact data that is not needed for review.
- Capture evidence deliberately. Screenshots and traces can help diagnose a workflow, but they can also preserve personal or confidential information. Capture and retain them only under an appropriate policy; neither a screenshot nor a “success” message alone proves that an external action completed.
The 2026 paper The Verifiable Action Card evaluates 24 scenarios, including confused-deputy attacks, forged approval dialogs, indirect prompt injection, action substitution and provenance evasion, alongside legitimate tasks. Its central relevance here is that an approval prompt can itself be manipulated: ground the human’s decision in the executable action and its context, rather than trusting a page-generated dialog or agent-written description.
Choose a browser framework or managed handoff service
A framework gives you control over the automation code; a managed browser service may provide a built-in way to expose a live session to an operator. Compare options against the workflow you need rather than assuming that browser support alone implies safe takeover.
| Evaluation question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Browser coverage | Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, as well as branded Chrome and Edge channels. Confirm that the target site and deployment environment work with the browser channel you plan to use. |
| Session continuity | Can a person take control of the same live session and return it to the script, or does the workflow only show a separate image or replay? |
| MFA and CAPTCHA | Does the operator complete the challenge in the session, and can the automation safely resume afterward without attempting to bypass it? |
| Approval granularity | Can approval be bound to one specific action and its important values rather than an entire task or broad permission? |
| Credential isolation | How are accounts, cookies, secrets and task permissions scoped and protected? |
| Audit and observability | Can you record the decision and diagnose the workflow without retaining more sensitive page content than necessary? |
| Deployment, latency and cost | Check where the browser runs, how operators connect, and the service’s actual latency and pricing for your workload. Those values depend on the chosen deployment and are not established here. |
Cloudflare Browser Run and Microsoft Foundry Browser Automation are examples of managed directions with documented handoff or take-control workflows; Playwright is the framework option. Their particular coverage, security controls, deployment constraints and commercial terms should be checked in the documentation for the edition you plan to use. The available material here does not establish a like-for-like cost, latency or feature ranking among them.

The human cannot see or control the browser
A screenshot, recording or CLI prompt is not the same as a live-session handoff. Confirm that the operator is connected to the browser instance the script will resume, and that the automation is paused while control is with them. If the chosen environment does not provide that capability, use a documented live-view/take-control workflow or redesign the checkpoint; do not pretend a separate browser copy is the same session.
The page changed after approval
Do not reuse a stale locator or execute the previously approved action by default. Re-read the origin, visible control, relevant fields and page state. If any meaningful detail differs, show the changed action to the operator and obtain a new decision.
The script times out at MFA or CAPTCHA
Make the challenge an intentional handoff state rather than treating it as a routine wait. Let the authorized person complete it in the session, then verify that the expected authenticated page is visible before continuing. Do not attempt to bypass the challenge.

The submission may have gone through, but confirmation is missing
Do not click again automatically. Check for a reliable user-visible result or use an authorized status/reconciliation path; if you cannot establish the outcome, route it to a person. A retry can duplicate a payment, message or other consequential action.
The approval prompt is vague or influenced by page content
Stop the workflow and rebuild the prompt from the controller’s proposed executable action and current browser state. Include the relevant origin and values, and treat instructions found in page content as untrusted. Approval should not be inferred from a page dialog or broad “continue” response.
Operational trade-offs to plan for
Human checkpoints add waiting time and operator workload, so reserve them for actions whose risk justifies review instead of interrupting every navigation step. Conversely, reducing pauses by granting broader credentials or treating CAPTCHA, uncertain results and sensitive submissions as routine shifts risk to the account owner. Track where workflows pause and why, but do not collect sensitive page contents simply to optimize throughput.
Recommended Free Tools
Reliability depends on recovering safely when the person is unavailable or the browser state changes. Decide in advance whether each interruption should wait, cancel, expire or move to manual review. Isolated task state, visible-result assertions, controlled permissions, and a clear rule against automatic retries after uncertain submissions make failures easier to contain.
The practical test for a checkpoint is simple: can the operator tell what the agent is about to do, verify that the current page still matches that proposal, and reject it without the browser proceeding anyway? If not, the workflow has a pause, but not yet a trustworthy human approval boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can human-in-the-loop browser automation work without an AI agent?
Yes. A deterministic script can use the same policy gates and handoff states; the human checkpoint is about controlling risky actions, not about requiring a model.
Does approving an action guarantee that the website completed it?
No. Approval authorizes the proposed action; the workflow still needs to verify the resulting page state or reconcile an uncertain outcome.
