Darb is described by its author, Abdulrahman Haramain, as a two-part assistive vision project: a local engine handles immediate obstacle cues, while a cloud engine produces broader descriptions of a scene. The design aims to combine a fast response with richer context, but Haramain’s reported performance figures are project claims, not independently validated benchmarks. The available account does not establish Darb as a proven-safe mobility aid.
How Darb divides vision processing
Haramain’s architecture separates immediate, action-relevant cues from higher-level scene interpretation. The local “Reflex” engine is intended to identify obstacles, barriers, or drops. The cloud-based “Comprehension” engine is intended to describe what is happening in a wider view of the scene.

The author says the Reflex engine runs on the client using MediaPipe and TensorFlow Lite models. Processing locally is intended to reduce reliance on a network round trip for cues that may need a quick response.

Comprehension: cloud scene descriptions
For richer interpretation, Darb sends selected keyframes to Google Vertex AI, using Gemini for semantic scene understanding. The resulting descriptions are delivered as audio, according to the project account. This path adds cloud processing and network conditions to the time before a description is available.

How the two engines are meant to coordinate
Haramain says custom state-management hooks let Reflex interrupt and override Comprehension when the local engine detects a hazard while the cloud is still processing. In the author’s description, this gives immediate obstacle cues priority over a slower scene description. It is an account of the intended control flow, not independent verification of how reliably the override works.
Local response versus cloud context
The design presents a trade-off rather than a controlled comparison: local inference is assigned the faster, network-independent role, while cloud inference is assigned the more context-rich description task. The source does not report a systematic comparison of the two paths.

What the reported speed figures do—and do not—show
The figures above come from Haramain’s first-person DEV Community post, published September 29, 2026. The account gives no benchmark methodology, hardware configuration, test conditions, or independent evaluation. “30+ FPS” and “approximately one to three seconds” should therefore be read as the author’s reported project figures, not as general performance guarantees or results established by a published benchmark.

Project context and what remains unestablished
Haramain lists React and Next.js among the project’s core technologies, alongside MediaPipe for client-side spatial mapping and Vertex AI for cloud processing. He also says Darb received an Outstanding Completion Award at Kuwait Codes 2026; these are claims in the author’s account.

The post describes an architecture, but does not establish supported devices, required camera or audio hardware, model versions, accessibility-study results, independent safety testing, or collision-prevention effectiveness.
