Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can build a branded WordPress login page with the core wp_login_form() function, while keeping authentication in WordPress. For registration, treat extra fields as three separate jobs: display them, validate their submitted values, and save approved data after account creation. First confirm that registration is enabled and whether the site uses Multisite.
Choose the right approach
| Approach | Best fit | What it supports | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core login form embedded in a custom page | A branded layout around standard WordPress authentication | wp_login_form() outputs or returns a form and supports a redirect, labels, other settings, and output filters. WordPress function reference |
Fastest route while WordPress continues to process credentials. Visual control comes from the surrounding page, documented options, and filters. |
| Custom authentication handler | A specific need that the core form and its filters cannot meet | Replaces or changes parts of the login request and flow handled through wp-login.php. WordPress security guidance |
Requires more code and security responsibility. The cited guidance does not provide a complete replacement-handler implementation or security review. |
| Core registration flow with extra fields | Most registration forms that need additional profile data | register_form adds markup, registration_errors validates, and user_register can save data after account creation. register_form, registration_errors, user_register |
You must implement each stage. Displaying a field alone does not validate or store its value. |
Compare the options against your desired visual control, redirect needs, custom fields and validation, whether you want to retain core account handling, and whether the site is Multisite. A custom visual design does not by itself require replacing authentication.
Create a custom login page
WordPress describes wp_login_form() as providing “a simple login form for use anywhere within WordPress.” Create a normal page for the design, then call the function from an appropriate theme or plugin context. By default it prints the form; set echo to false if the calling code needs to capture the returned HTML. The generated form submits to the WordPress login endpoint. See the function arguments and behavior.
- Create and design a regular WordPress page for the login experience.
- Call
wp_login_form()from the site’s theme or plugin implementation. Keep the core form if you want WordPress to handle credential processing. - Set a suitable absolute URL with the function’s redirect argument, and configure supported labels and form options as needed.
- Use the documented login form filters to add or adjust content around the core fields. Treat changes to the authentication request itself as a separate, security-sensitive implementation.
The function reference documents the form options and filters, but a custom authentication handler needs its own review against current WordPress security guidance. Do not assume a replacement handler is equivalent to styling the standard form.

Build registration with custom fields
Before designing the form, check Settings > General and confirm that public registration is enabled if visitors are meant to create accounts. On Multisite, establish the site’s signup and registration flow before extending it; the register_form reference flags signup_header as a Multisite consideration.
For the built-in registration screen, use the hooks for separate stages. The distinction matters: adding an input only renders it. It does not make WordPress validate the input or save it.

- Add markup: use
register_formto render the extra field on the built-in registration form. For a fully custom page, provide equivalent field markup, but do not treat rendering as processing. - Validate before account creation: use the registration error flow, including
registration_errors, to check submitted values and add errors that prevent an invalid registration. Do not wait until the account-created hook to reject bad input. Hook reference - Save after successful creation: use
user_registerto store permitted extra profile data, commonly as user metadata. Sanitize incoming values for their intended use, and escape values for the context in which you display them later. Hook reference - Handle the result: present registration errors clearly and send successful users to an intentional destination. The core registration function returns a user ID on success or a
WP_Erroron failure. register_new_user() reference
Know what the core registration function does
register_new_user() validates a username and email, generates a password, and returns either a user ID or a WP_Error. It does not offer a user-selected password through that function. If the required flow includes a user-chosen password or additional account-creation parameters, its reference points to wp_create_user() or wp_insert_user() as alternatives. Function reference
For a fully custom registration page, preserve the equivalent responsibilities: validate input before creating the account, handle creation errors, and store extra approved data only after successful creation. The core hooks do not automatically wire a custom page’s fields into that workflow.
