Build an organic cursor reveal by tracking pointer movement over a shared visual container, then using those coordinates to position a soft or irregular reveal layer. React provides pointer event handlers; the shape and rendering technique are choices you make with CSS or another visual layer. Keep decorative layers from blocking the content, and reduce or remove non-essential movement when a user prefers reduced motion.
How the effect works
An organic cursor reveal has two parts: the pointer supplies a changing position, and a visual layer uses that position to reveal a second image, color, or other state. “Organic” describes the art direction—such as a soft edge or uneven shape—not a special React feature.
React DOM components support pointer handlers, including movement and enter/leave events. Use the event as input to your effect; React does not create the reveal geometry for you. See React’s pointer event documentation.
Build the reveal in stages
- Align both visual states. Render the base and revealed content in a common container so their dimensions and positions match.
- Track movement on the intended region. Attach React pointer handlers to the container or another suitable region. Decide how pointer coordinates map to the coordinate system used by the reveal styling; the exact conversion depends on your layout.
- Render the reveal shape. Apply the coordinates to a visual layer or mask. A soft circular edge, irregular shape, or animated boundary is an art-direction decision. CSS clipping, gradients, SVG masks, and canvas are possible approaches, but no single method is established here as the best choice.
- Check event targeting. Make sure a decorative overlay does not prevent users from interacting with meaningful content underneath it.
- Provide a reduced-motion alternative. Remove, simplify, or replace non-essential movement when the user prefers reduced motion.
This is an implementation outline, not a tested recipe: the right coordinate handling and rendering method depend on the component and layout. The sources cited here do not establish browser compatibility for a particular mask technique or provide performance results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the overlay from blocking interaction
CSS pointer-events determines whether an element can be a pointer-event target. For a purely decorative reveal layer, configure targeting so it does not intercept interactions intended for underlying links, buttons, or other content. See MDN’s pointer-events reference.
Cursor appearance is a separate concern: the CSS cursor property controls which cursor, if any, appears over an element. A reveal can use pointer coordinates while leaving the native cursor visible. If you do replace it, preserve clear interaction cues and provide a fallback keyword for custom cursor imagery. See MDN’s cursor reference.

Choose whether to keep the native cursor
| Approach | What it does | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Native cursor plus reveal | Keeps the browser cursor visible and uses pointer position only to drive the mask. | When the reveal is the visual effect and cursor replacement is not part of the design. |
| Custom or follow cursor | Adds a separate cursor visual that can be customized or follow pointer movement. | When a designed cursor is an intentional part of the interface, with its own interaction and motion decisions. |
Motion documents replacement and follow-cursor modes, as well as reduced-motion handling, in its React cursor documentation. Its cursor component is an optional shortcut, not a requirement for a custom React and CSS reveal. The documentation does not establish which approach performs better or suits every reveal design.
Respect reduced-motion preferences
The prefers-reduced-motion media feature signals that a user wants non-essential motion minimized. You can use CSS @media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) to remove or reduce motion, or use a library’s preference-handling mechanism. MDN describes the preference in its reduced-motion reference; Motion’s cursor documentation also demonstrates disabling its component for that preference.

Reduced motion is one accessibility consideration, not a guarantee that a particular mask is accessible. Keep the revealed content understandable and usable without relying on the movement itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse cursor reveals with scroll reveals
Motion’s scroll image reveal example maps scroll progress to clipping and transform values using useScroll, useTransform, and useRef. It is scroll-linked, not a pointer-driven cursor reveal. A cursor effect needs pointer position as its input instead.
