A small, read-only Model Context Protocol (MCP) server can let an AI assistant look up and compare Kenya eSIM plans using structured data rather than relying on stale general knowledge. For eSIMKenya, the reported design centers on three tools—list providers, retrieve one provider, and compare options—but trustworthy answers depend just as much on clear data provenance, freshness, and coverage caveats as on the MCP connection itself.

What an eSIM comparison MCP server does

MCP gives an AI client a standard way to discover server capabilities and call them. The official MCP server guide describes three capability types: tools, which perform callable operations; resources, which expose readable data; and prompts, which provide reusable prompt templates. For a travel comparison service, tools are the core: an assistant can filter plans for an itinerary, fetch details, and compare relevant options.

A Glama directory listing for the eSIM Kenya MCP Server reports that it is read-only, exposes provider, plan, pricing, rating, and coverage data from esimkenya.com, and provides the remote endpoint https://mcp.esimkenya.com/mcp. These are directory-reported details, not an independently verified code review or endpoint test. Treat package names, fields, deployment steps, and live behavior as unconfirmed until checked against the current project source and official MCP documentation.

Design tools around travelers’ actual questions

The server listing describes three tools that map neatly to different stages of a comparison. Keep each operation narrowly scoped and describe its filters precisely so a model does not treat missing information as a positive match.

List and filter providers

list_esim_providers is reported to search or filter by destination, badge, safari coverage, rating, or price, with optional park-level coverage notes. Make the meaning and units of every filter explicit: for example, whether a price filter means a maximum total cost, what currency applies, and whether safari coverage is a provider-level claim or a plan-specific attribute.

Retrieve one provider’s details

get_esim_provider is reported to fetch provider details and plan tiers by slug. A stable slug avoids ambiguity between similarly named providers. Return normalized fields alongside any important vendor wording, especially where terms such as “unlimited” depend on fair-use limits or speed conditions.

Compare plans side by side

compare_esim_providers is reported to return a curated head-to-head verdict when one exists, or full details side by side otherwise. A verdict should explain the criteria behind it and remain conditional: a low-cost city plan may not suit a multi-stop safari itinerary, while a plan with broad regional validity may cost more than a traveler needs.

Resources and prompts can supplement the tools without replacing them. A compact resource could define coverage terminology or explain how the publisher scores plans. A prompt could ask the traveler for dates, destinations, expected data use, budget, and whether hotspot or calls matter. The official guide’s capability descriptions are the reference for implementing these patterns; check its current SDK documentation before relying on a particular API.

Return enough normalized data for a defensible recommendation

A provider name and headline price are not enough to compare plans meaningfully. A useful response should carry the fields an assistant needs to explain trade-offs, with explicit unknown values rather than inferred answers.

  • Identity: provider name, stable provider slug, and plan name.
  • Coverage: destination scope, local network partner where known, and any itinerary- or park-specific coverage notes.
  • Allowance and validity: data amount or an “unlimited” label, validity period, daily caps, and fair-use or speed conditions when stated.
  • Price: total amount and currency, with the data allowance and validity beside it. Price per GB can be useful for fixed-data plans, but should not make unlike plans appear equivalent.
  • Practical terms: hotspot, voice and SMS availability, activation timing, device compatibility, and support details where the source establishes them.
  • Trust metadata: the source for each volatile fact, its last-updated timestamp, and a purchase URL that points to the relevant plan.

Keep publisher scoring separate from vendor terms. For example, a site’s rating or “best for” label is editorial judgment; a plan’s data limit and validity are product terms. Returning both with clear labels lets an assistant explain which claims are measured, which are attributed, and which are simply unavailable.

Make “live data” a visible quality promise

A live endpoint does not guarantee that every underlying price or coverage note is current. Attach source and update-time metadata to volatile fields, and distinguish a fresh upstream response from a cached record. If a feed is unavailable or older than the server’s stated freshness threshold, return that status clearly instead of presenting stored values as live.

Use a cache policy that balances reasonable upstream request rates with the volatility of prices and plan terms. Explain when data was last refreshed and advise users to recheck the provider’s purchase page before buying. Do not collapse unknowns into reassuring prose: if the source does not specify hotspot support, park-level signal, or a fair-use cap, return that as unknown rather than asking the model to guess.

A separate example of developer-facing data documentation is eSIM Advice’s API and AI access page, which describes attribution terms and a rolling/nightly sync schedule. That is an example of how provenance and refresh expectations can be documented; it does not establish that eSIMKenya uses that service or refresh cadence.

Represent coverage and value without false certainty

Coverage comparisons should distinguish the local network used by a plan from the actual service a traveler can expect at a particular point. A network footprint does not guarantee that every plan using that network works at every lodge, road, or remote conservancy.

eSIMKenya says coverage is stronger in Nairobi and generally good in Mombasa and major coastal resorts, while Maasai Mara service can be patchy, stronger near lodge gates and main park roads, and weak or absent in deep bush and remote conservancies. Those are the site’s statements, not independent field verification. The site says its coverage was tested in April 2026; its comparison page also says listed prices were accurate as of April 2026. Treat those dates as historical context, not a present-day guarantee, and preserve the attribution if such claims appear in tool output.

Likewise, avoid a single universal “best eSIM” ranking. A useful assistant first considers the traveler’s cities and parks, trip length, data needs, budget, and whether the plan must cover other countries. It can then compare allowance, validity, network, activation, hotspot, voice/SMS, compatibility, and support. One-day unlimited and 30-day fixed-data plans should not be ranked as if they were interchangeable just because one headline price is lower.

Apple iPhone Air, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Sky Blue- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Universal Carrier Compatibility: This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.)
  • Carrier Verification Required: Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility
  • Simple Activation Process: When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service
  • Package Contents: The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable
  • Battery Health Guarantee: Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%

eSIMKenya says its rankings consider network quality, safari-park coverage, price per GB, activation speed, and customer support. It also discloses that it earns affiliate commissions through purchase links and says commissions do not influence rankings. These are publisher claims, so an assistant should identify them as such rather than present the scoring method or independence claim as independently verified.

Choose a transport and deployment that fit the client

Transport depends on where the assistant will connect. The official MCP server documentation covers server patterns and client configuration; consult the current guide and SDK reference when implementing because API details can evolve.

  • Local stdio: useful when a developer runs a server on their own machine and a local client launches it. Keep protocol messages on standard output. The official guide warns: “For STDIO-based servers: Never use console.log(), as it writes to standard output (stdout) by default. Writing to stdout will corrupt the JSON-RPC messages and break your server.” Use stderr-safe logging such as console.error() for diagnostics.
  • Hosted HTTP: suited to remote clients that need to reach a centrally deployed service. The Glama listing reports a TypeScript McpServer, WebStandardStreamableHTTPServerTransport, and a stateless Cloudflare Worker fetch handler for this server. Those are reported implementation details, not verified deployment instructions.

The same directory listing reports reads from Supabase using public credentials restricted by row-level security, with no write or service-role access. This is a sensible least-privilege pattern for a read-only comparison tool, but the policy itself has not been independently inspected here. Verify access rules, exposed tables, secrets, and deployment configuration in the actual repository before adopting the pattern.

Keep the server read-only, bounded, and transparent

Comparison tools generally need to retrieve and transform data, not alter provider records. Restrict the database identity and tool surface accordingly. Validate inputs such as destination, slug, price bounds, and rating filters; cap result counts; and handle upstream timeouts or missing records with explicit errors rather than fabricated recommendations.

  • Do not expose database write operations or privileged credentials to the tool runtime.
  • Use row-level access controls and test that public reads return only intended fields.
  • Limit query breadth and request rates to protect the data source.
  • Return a clear freshness or unavailable state when upstream data cannot be confirmed.
  • Keep tool descriptions and schemas specific enough to prevent ambiguous filters.

Handle referrals as a separate, disclosed feature

The Glama listing says provider responses include affiliate links, but that behavior was not validated against the live endpoint. eSIMKenya’s homepage separately discloses that the site earns commissions from purchase links and says commissions do not affect rankings. If a deployment includes referral links, label the commercial relationship in the user-facing experience and verify each provider’s program availability, MCP-surface permissions, disclosure rules, attribution terms, and current requirements before integration. Do not assume a program, commission, tracking window, or approval exists merely because a comparison page uses affiliate links.

What the reported eSIMKenya example establishes

The directory listing is useful as an architectural sketch: three read-oriented comparison tools, a remote endpoint, and a reported stateless HTTP deployment. It does not establish that the implementation is secure, that its current response schema matches the listing, or that all returned data is fresh. The official MCP guide is the source for protocol concepts and implementation guidance; the eSIMKenya pages are the source for that publisher’s own plan, ranking, and coverage statements. Keeping those evidence roles separate is what allows an assistant to be useful without overstating what it knows.
