You can build a lightweight asset and inventory dashboard by keeping records in one data source, using JavaScript and jQuery to search, filter, and render that data, styling the interface with Tailwind CSS, and deriving charts with Chart.js. The public example uses mock records rather than a live company system, so treat it as a front-end pattern—not a production integration.
Decide what the dashboard needs to answer
Before choosing cards or charts, define the operational questions the page should make easy to answer:
- What items are in stock, and in what quantities?
- Where is each item stored or assigned?
- What is the recorded value of the inventory or assets?
- What has moved, and when?
The example covers materials, assets, personal protective equipment (PPE), uniforms, and movement history. It groups materials by warehouse and assets by cost center. PPE and uniforms can remain distinct categories or views when the organization tracks them separately.
Model records before building the interface
Materials
A useful material record can include a warehouse code and name, item code and name, quantity, unit value, and total value. Store the underlying values as data rather than embedding them in display text. A calculated total can then be derived consistently from quantity and unit value.

Assets and other categories
Group assets by cost center, and include the identifiers and descriptive fields needed to locate a record. Keep PPE and uniforms distinguishable if their ownership, movement, or replenishment processes differ. The example’s values are illustrative mock data, not observed stock levels or business statistics.
Movement history
Represent movement as records associated with an item or asset, with enough detail to show what changed and where it went. The public example includes movement history, but the source does not establish a production audit trail or a particular persistence model.

Separate the data source from application logic
Think of the page as a flow: source data → application logic → summary cards and tables → charts. In the public example, mock-data.js holds demonstration records, while app.js handles rendering, search, filtering, charts, and interactions. Keeping these concerns separate makes it easier to substitute another source without rewriting every display component.
A live API can replace the mock source only if it supplies the shape the application expects, or if an adapter converts the API response into that shape. Changing the data source does not by itself add authentication, authorization, persistence, or reliable handling of API failures.

Build the interface around finding and reviewing records
Category and search controls
The example provides category options ALL, MATERIAL, PPE, and ASSET. Its search covers code, name, warehouse, and cost center. Apply the selected category and search term to the same record set before rendering results. In the example, changing the category updates the displayed content without a page reload.
Summary values and records
Place the most useful summary values where they are visible, then show the matching records in a table or similarly scannable list. The summaries should be calculated from the data currently in scope; otherwise, a reader can see a filtered table alongside totals for a different set of records.

Charts and movement detail
Use charts to show patterns that are harder to compare row by row, and keep movement details available when readers need to understand how an item changed. Derive both charts and summaries from the same filtered dataset as the records table. This avoids conflicting totals caused by separate filtering or duplicated data.
Use Chart.js for visual summaries
Chart.js draws into an HTML canvas and takes a JavaScript configuration containing a chart type, labels, and datasets. Its step-by-step guide describes setup and customization. It states: “By default, Chart.js charts are responsive and take the whole enclosing container.” Size the enclosing container intentionally so a responsive chart fits the layout you want.

Choose chart types according to the question—such as comparing categories or showing changes over time—rather than adding visualizations simply because the library supports them. Labels and values should come from the current data view, not a second set of hard-coded figures.

Why use jQuery instead of React, Vue, or another framework?
For a small page that updates a few controls, tables, and charts, jQuery can handle DOM and event work without introducing a larger front-end framework. That is a scope-based choice, not evidence that jQuery is universally preferable. The example does not provide a framework benchmark or prove that one approach scales better. If the interface grows into complex, reusable stateful views, compare the maintenance and testing needs of the available approaches before committing.
Know what the public example does not provide
The public project uses mock data because company-specific details and integrations were removed. Authentication, role-based access, exports, pagination, and live API integration are described as possible future improvements, not demonstrated features. Production use also requires deliberate decisions about authorization, permissions, data validation, persistence, API errors, and how the interface behaves as record counts grow.
Build your own dashboard or use a managed option?
A custom front end gives you room to shape categories and workflows around your records, but your team must build and maintain the data integration, access controls, and deployment. A managed product can provide hosted dashboards, though its capabilities and availability depend on the product and plan.
