You can build a video proxy that streams an upstream response through Node.js without intentionally saving the media payload to a local file. Express handles the proxy route; Vite can run alongside it in middleware mode during development. “Zero-disk” describes the application’s handling of the video body—not a guarantee that a reverse proxy, host, or other deployment component never buffers or writes data.
What “zero-disk” means for a video proxy
A streamed proxy passes data along as it arrives rather than deliberately collecting the full video in memory or writing it to a file first. The basic path is:
- The client requests a video from your Express route.
- The route requests that resource from an upstream server.
- Your Node.js server forwards the upstream response to the client as a stream.
Node.js describes its HTTP interfaces as low-level APIs that support large messages without buffering entire requests or responses, so applications can stream data. That is a statement about Node’s HTTP interfaces, not certification that every component in a deployment is disk-free. See the Node.js HTTP documentation.
Use Vite in middleware mode during development
Vite can be attached to an Express application through its middleware interface. Its server-options documentation shows middleware mode mounted as vite.middlewares in Express. This lets the application retain control of its main server while Vite serves development assets.

When using Vite’s appType: 'custom' option, the application is responsible for handling HTML requests as described in Vite’s server options documentation. Vite’s SSR guide recommends middleware mode when an application needs control of its main server and separation from the production environment.
Keep the roles distinct: Vite is part of the development workflow, not automatically the production path for video data. Choose and configure a production server architecture separately.

Design the streaming route around the upstream response
The route’s job is to request an allowed upstream resource, then pass its response status, relevant headers, and body through to the client without intentionally persisting the body. An Express-compatible proxy package such as http-proxy-middleware is available, but its existence alone does not establish that a particular configuration correctly handles video ranges, client cancellation, or all required headers. Check its current documentation and version against your upstream protocol: http-proxy-middleware documentation.
This guide does not prescribe a complete route implementation: the available framework guidance establishes streaming capabilities and Vite integration, but not a verified, ready-to-deploy video proxy sample. In particular, video seeking and partial responses need separate implementation work. Confirm your handling of Range requests, 206 Partial Content, Content-Range, Content-Length, Accept-Ranges, unsatisfiable ranges, and multiple ranges against HTTP requirements and the upstream provider before serving real traffic.

Production decisions a streaming route does not make for you
Passing a body through as a stream is only one part of a production design. Decide how the service will control upstream access, protect the route, and behave when requests or dependencies fail.
- Upstream trust and destinations: define which hosts or resources the route may contact. Do not let an untrusted client choose arbitrary upstream destinations.
- Authentication and authorization: determine which clients may use the proxy and whether access to the upstream video also requires authorization.
- Timeouts and concurrency: set limits appropriate to your service so stalled upstream requests and excessive simultaneous streams do not consume resources indefinitely.
- Errors and cancellation: decide how upstream failures are returned and ensure the implementation accounts for clients disconnecting before a stream completes.
- Deployment buffering: inspect the behavior of any reverse proxy, load balancer, host, or other component in the path. Node’s API behavior does not prove what those components do with data.
These are design choices, not values established by the cited framework documentation. Test the complete deployed path if avoiding local media files or limiting buffering is a requirement.

Do not confuse outbound proxy settings with this route
Node.js documentation also describes proxy support for outbound HTTP clients. That configures how Node’s requests reach other servers; it is different from implementing an inbound route that relays a video response to a client. A configured outbound proxy may observe connection metadata and, depending on transport and TLS handling, potentially content.
