Build the app around Nuxt server endpoints: keep the football-data token on the server, load initial data with useFetch, and refresh deliberately within the provider’s request limits. One important version caveat: Nuxt’s lifecycle documentation says Nuxt 3 reached end of life on 31 July 2026, so a new production project should assess a supported Nuxt version rather than adopt Nuxt 3 by default.
Choose the competition scope and data your screens need
Before writing endpoints, decide which competitions and seasons you will support, which match states matter, and whether users need one standings table or several. football-data.org v4 documents competition match and standings resources, with match filters including matchday, season, date, and status. Its documented match states include SCHEDULED, LIVE, IN_PLAY, PAUSED, FINISHED, POSTPONED, SUSPENDED, and CANCELLED.
Keep the provider’s status in your app model instead of reducing every match to “live” or “not live.” For example, a postponed match is not the same as a scheduled fixture, and a paused match should not be presented as if play were continuing. Scores and other provider values may be null when unknown or unavailable, so your UI and types must allow for that.

A league competition can return total, home, and away tables. League cups may return a table for each group, while cups or playoffs may not have standings at all. Render the table structure the provider returns, including its group or home/away context. For a knockout format without a table, show an appropriate bracket or results view rather than rendering a missing standings resource as an empty league table.

Keep provider credentials and requests on the Nuxt server
Nuxt automatically registers handlers in the server/ directory; files under server/api/ are exposed under the /api prefix. Use that layer to attach the provider’s X-Auth-Token, normalize responses, handle provider failures, and decide which responses can be cached. The browser calls your app, not football-data.org directly, so the private token does not need to be shipped in client code.
For example, declare a private runtime setting in nuxt.config.ts and supply its value through the server environment as NUXT_FOOTBALL_DATA_TOKEN:
export default defineNuxtConfig({
runtimeConfig: {
footballDataToken: ''
}
})
Keep the token in deployment environment configuration or a secret manager; do not put a real token in source control or a public runtime-config field.

- ANYONE CAN PLAY: 100 Yards was designed for kids, but we have found that is loved by people of all ages. This game is great to keep your young kids up and engaged! 100 Yards is recommended for ages 6+, older kids (and even adults).
- GAME BOX INCLUDES 60 PLAYING CARDS AND 6 GAME PIECES: The 100 Yards Game box has 60 cards for game play, and 6 unique game pieces
- EASY TO LEARN: 100 Yards takes less than 5 minutes to learn. The goal is simple, beat other players to the 100 Yard Line (End Zone). A full game lasts 15 to 20 minutes, but people typically end up playing for much longer, either to rematch or to go for a dynasty. Game play involves simple addition and subtraction with some light strategy.
- FAMILY GAME NIGHT: 100 Yards is the perfect addition for your family game night especially if you have a wide age range of kids from ages 6+ to teenagers. Players and parents can compete against each other, as 100 Yards allows for up to 6 players per game.
- GAME DAY/TAIL GATE: Are you gearing up to watch a Professional or College Football game? 100 Yards will get your entire household in the mood. The game box is portable and can easily be set up for home play or be conveniently carried to other locations.
Create a match endpoint
This example accepts a competition code and optional season, matchday, date, or status filters. Validate inputs against the competitions and filters your app intends to support; do not treat arbitrary query strings as a security or product policy.
// server/api/matches.get.ts
export default defineEventHandler(async (event) => {
const config = useRuntimeConfig(event)
const query = getQuery(event)
const competition = String(query.competition || '')
if (!/^[A-Z0-9]{2,8}$/.test(competition)) {
throw createError({ statusCode: 400, statusMessage: 'Invalid competition code' })
}
if (!config.footballDataToken) {
throw createError({ statusCode: 500, statusMessage: 'Football data token is not configured' })
}
const providerQuery = {
season: query.season,
matchday: query.matchday,
dateFrom: query.dateFrom,
dateTo: query.dateTo,
status: query.status
}
try {
return await $fetch(
`https://api.football-data.org/v4/competitions/${competition}/matches`,
{
headers: { 'X-Auth-Token': config.footballDataToken },
query: providerQuery
}
)
} catch {
throw createError({ statusCode: 502, statusMessage: 'Football data provider request failed' })
}
})
The example returns the provider response so the page can use its match fields directly. For a larger app, normalize it at this boundary into a stable application contract: retain match, competition, and season IDs; kickoff time; home and away team names; status; and nullable score values. This prevents provider-specific details from spreading through every component.
Add a standings endpoint
The corresponding standings resource is /v4/competitions/{competition}/standings. Put it behind a Nuxt handler as well, using the same server-only token and error-handling approach. Preserve all returned tables and their context instead of assuming the first table is the only one. Check the provider’s endpoint documentation for supported filters and the competition’s available data before promising a season or table view.

Load initial data with useFetch, then refresh intentionally
Use Nuxt’s SSR-aware useFetch or useAsyncData during page setup. Nuxt documents useFetch as a wrapper designed for universal rendering; calling $fetch by itself in setup can fetch once during server rendering and again during client hydration. Use $fetch for interaction-triggered requests, such as a user changing the selected matchday.

<script setup lang="ts">
const competition = ref('PL')
const matchday = ref<number | undefined>()
const { data, pending, error, refresh } = await useFetch('/api/matches', {
query: { competition, matchday }
})
const lastUpdated = ref<string | null>(null)
watch(data, (value) => {
if (value) lastUpdated.value = new Date().toISOString()
})
let timer: ReturnType<typeof setInterval> | undefined
onMounted(() => {
timer = setInterval(() => refresh(), 30_000)
})
onUnmounted(() => {
if (timer) clearInterval(timer)
})
</script>
The 30-second interval here is an illustrative client-side polling choice, not a promise about provider update speed or a guaranteed freshness target. At that interval, one page refreshing one endpoint makes two requests per minute while mounted; refreshing several competitions or endpoints multiplies the total. In production, coordinate polling centrally where possible, account for all users and server calls, and make the interval configurable for the provider plan and expected traffic.
Show loading, error, and last-updated states in the interface. If a refresh fails, retain the last successful data where appropriate and identify it as stale rather than silently presenting it as current. Do not invent a minute-by-minute match clock or label a match live unless the provider status supports that presentation.

Respect the football-data.org request budget
football-data.org’s published policy gives different limits by access type. These are provider-published limits; the policy page’s publication date is not stated in the available material, so verify the current plan and terms before committing to a refresh schedule.
| Access type | Published limit | Access notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unauthenticated | 100 requests per 24 hours | Restricted to area and competition list resources |
| Registered free plan | 10 requests per minute | Authenticated API access |
| Standard plan | 30 requests per minute | Authenticated API access |
| Plans above Standard | 60 requests per minute | Authenticated API access |
Budget requests across all users and endpoints, not just one browser tab. Prefer fetching a competition’s match list over making a separate provider request for every fixture. Reuse server-side results across clients when the freshness requirement allows, and reduce or stop frequent score refreshes when matches are not in progress. The right interval depends on the number of competitions, endpoints, users, and the provider’s current plan limits.
Render standings according to format and season
Use the competition standings endpoint for the season and preserve the table fields it returns. Label the relevant table clearly—for example, total versus home/away, or a group name—so users can tell which standings they are viewing. If the competition format has no league table, use its results or bracket presentation instead.

Historical tables also need a product decision. football-data.org says it provides official standings for running seasons, but may remove deducted points from past seasons. If the app must show a table exactly as it appeared at a historical point, capture and store periodic snapshots with their capture dates rather than assuming the provider’s later historical response preserves every past state.
Choose caching and deployment to match freshness
Nuxt’s server engine, Nitro, supports server endpoints, hybrid rendering, and deployment presets that include Cloudflare Workers, Netlify Functions, and Vercel Cloud. Choose a runtime that supports the server handlers your app needs, then test its request limits, cache behavior, and execution constraints in the intended deployment.
Stable pages or competition metadata may be suitable for prerendering or longer caching. A live-score endpoint needs a cache lifetime aligned with the freshness users expect; sharing a server-cached response can reduce provider calls, but an overly long cache can make a score appear current when it is not. Use deployment route rules or an equivalent cache policy only after deciding the acceptable staleness and how failures should be displayed. No provider push or streaming feed is established here, so describe the app as periodically refreshed rather than instantaneous.
Account for Nuxt 3’s end-of-life status
Nuxt’s official lifecycle page identifies Nuxt 3.21.11 and states, “Nuxt 3 reached end of life on 31 July 2026”. As of 5 October 2026, Nuxt 3 no longer receives bug fixes or security patches unless extended support is obtained from HeroDevs. If you are maintaining an existing Nuxt 3 app, include that support status in your upgrade and security planning. If you are starting from scratch, assess a supported Nuxt version before adopting Nuxt 3 specifically; this tutorial’s server-layer and data-flow pattern should be checked against the version you choose.
