To build a maintainable Directus client in Go, wrap the API in a small HTTP transport, choose REST or GraphQL to suit your callers, and treat authentication and project schema as configuration—not assumptions. Directus documents both API styles with the same core functionality, but each instance’s available schema and data access depend on its database and permissions.
Choose REST or GraphQL for the client’s use case
Directus exposes REST and GraphQL APIs generated from the connected database architecture. Its documentation says both styles map to the same core services and functionality; the decision is about query shape and client ergonomics rather than a documented difference in capability. See the Directus API reference.
| Approach | Consider it when | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| REST | The client needs ordinary collection operations and a straightforward HTTP interface. | Requests follow endpoint conventions; evaluate whether their response shapes suit the caller. |
| GraphQL | Callers benefit from requesting a particular nested or selective data shape. | The client must manage GraphQL query documents and responses. |
These are implementation considerations, not Directus restrictions. A client can expose one style initially and add the other if the application needs it.
Design around each project’s schema and permissions
A Directus API is not a universal set of collections and fields. The available endpoints and GraphQL schema are generated from the connected database, and results depend on the configured permissions. Avoid client models that imply every Directus installation has the same data.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- For a known project, define Go structs for the collections and fields that integration uses.
- If collections or fields are not known until runtime, support generic decoding, such as decoding JSON into maps or raw messages.
- Handle missing or inaccessible fields as expected outcomes rather than assuming every user can read the full project.
Directus also provides a server endpoint for retrieving the project’s OpenAPI specification. The returned specification is based on the authenticated user’s read permissions, so it may not describe every endpoint an administrator can access. See the Directus Server API reference.
Build a small HTTP transport before adding endpoints
Keep the Directus base URL configurable and centralize request creation, authentication, response handling, and error conversion. Using Go’s standard net/http package keeps the basic transport explicit; these are general Go client design practices rather than Directus-specific guarantees.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Configure the base URL. Keep it out of endpoint methods so development, staging, and production instances can be selected without changing client code.
- Accept a request context. Pass it to each outgoing request so callers can cancel work or apply their own deadlines.
- Set an HTTP timeout. Configure the
http.Clientwith a timeout appropriate to the application, rather than allowing requests to wait indefinitely. - Close response bodies. Close each response body after processing it, including error responses.
- Separate failure categories. Preserve transport failures, HTTP status failures, and any Directus error payload as distinguishable information. No particular Go error type is prescribed by the cited Directus documentation.
Do not log authorization credentials or sensitive response bodies while recording failures. Keeping status and useful response details available to callers can aid diagnosis without exposing secrets.
Choose authentication for the deployment
Directus says, “All data within the platform is private by default.” A project can configure a public role, or a client can supply a token to access private data. The documented token options include temporary JWT access tokens returned by login, session tokens represented in cookies, and static user tokens. Review the Directus Authentication documentation for the target deployment’s current behavior.

| Authentication choice | What Directus documents | Client design consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Static user token | Does not expire; Directus describes it as less secure, while noting its use for server-to-server communication. | Use only where deployment policy permits it; protect and rotate the secret operationally. |
| Login with temporary access token | Access tokens are short-lived and paired with refresh tokens. | Implement the required login and refresh behavior for integrations that need user-oriented authentication. |
| Cookie session | Session tokens are represented in cookies. | Cookie behavior across domains depends on deployment configuration. |
Make the authentication choice explicit in client configuration. Store secrets outside source control and send token credentials in the Authorization bearer header. Directus warns against using the access_token query parameter in production because systems may log query parameters; do not put bearer credentials in URLs.

The community repository altipla-consulting/directus-go describes itself as a Directus Go SDK and documents installation with go get github.com/altipla-consulting/directus-go/v2. The project says v2 targets Directus 11 and v0/v1 target Directus 10; those are the library’s own compatibility claims, not an independent assessment of maintenance, completeness, or compatibility with a specific instance.
Before adopting a library, check its supported Directus major version, endpoint coverage, maintenance activity, error behavior, authentication handling, and dependency policy against your integration. A focused net/http client may be preferable when the required endpoints are limited or a dependency is undesirable; an SDK may reduce repeated plumbing if it covers the needed API surface.

Keep the client maintainable as the instance changes
- Keep URL, credentials, timeout, and API style configurable rather than embedding them in endpoint code.
- Keep project-specific models separate from transport logic, so schema changes do not require rewriting request handling.
- Inspect the OpenAPI specification with the same kind of account the application will use; an administrator’s view may not match a restricted user’s.
- Return errors with enough status and response context for callers to decide whether to retry, report a permission issue, or handle a missing resource.
- Check the live Directus documentation and the target server version when implementing authentication or generated-schema features.
