A useful bathroom concept model describes more than what is in the room. It starts with what people do there, then records the objects and infrastructure those activities need, how the pieces relate, and what conditions should be avoided. The result is a lightweight description of intent—not a bathroom design standard or renovation guide.
Start with what people do in the bathroom
Try it yourself: without looking at a picture of a bathroom, describe one in writing. A first pass often becomes an inventory of fixtures. To make it a concept model, begin instead with activities and ask what each one requires.
- Wash hands or face and brush teeth: a sink, a faucet connected to a water supply, and a drain. The example model also allows the water temperature to be adjusted and a stopper to hold water in the basin. Soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and perhaps a cup need places to go.
- Use the toilet: a toilet and a place for toilet paper, such as a holder. The example also includes a tool that could be used to unclog it.
- Shower: a shower with a water supply, adjustable temperature, and drainage for the shower area.
- Move through and use the room: an entrance and exit, plus lighting.
This activity-first approach links a fixture to its purpose and the supporting elements it depends on. It makes omissions easier to spot than a bare list does.
Check what the first inventory missed
After identifying activities and their obvious requirements, review the model for items that are easy to take for granted. In the bathroom example, a generated model omitted a mirror in front of the sink and cabinets for towels and toilet paper. It also raised possible covered outlets near the toilet and a door condition that could let overflow water escape.

Model relationships, not just objects
A model can contain all the expected objects and still describe a nonsensical room. The source illustrates this with a deliberately strange bathroom: a towel bar is under the shower outlet, supplies are difficult to reach, the sink faces the wrong way, and a shower control is on the floor. The room is also excessively large and exposed. The objects are present; their relationships are wrong.

A practical way to organize those relationships is to ask:
- Function: What activity does each element support? A sink supports washing and brushing; a shower supports bathing.
- Connection: What must connect to what? The faucet needs a water supply, while the basin and shower area need drainage.
- Placement and reach: Where should an element be relative to the person and the activity? A mirror belongs near or in front of the sink; supplies should be accessible where they are used.
- Orientation and height: Which way should a fixture face, and where should controls be positioned so they can be reached?
- Exposure and separation: Which items should be kept away from water? Towels and toilet paper should not sit in the shower’s water path. A bathroom door also raises questions of privacy and locking.
- Materials and boundaries: What surfaces and boundaries define the room? Include floors, walls, ceilings, and the way the room contains water and moisture.
- Negative constraints: What must not happen? Record prohibited placements or conditions, rather than assuming that a list of desired objects will imply them.

Include moisture and room boundaries
Showering introduces moisture, so the example model considers a window to the outside or a vent. That pair illustrates how a concept model can capture alternatives without deciding between them. It does not establish which option is suitable for a particular bathroom, or compare their cost, performance, energy use, or installation requirements.
More broadly, the room itself is part of the model: its surfaces and boundaries shape how fixtures relate and how water and moisture are contained. This is why describing only a sink, toilet, and shower leaves important parts of the concept unstated.

Keep the model in its proper role
The bathroom is a useful test case for concept modeling because ordinary activities depend on both objects and their relationships. The exercise is qualitative: it helps preserve intent and reveal gaps in a description. It is not professional guidance for building or renovating a bathroom. Mentions of ventilation, drainage, electrical outlets, or water containment should not be treated as code, accessibility, plumbing, or moisture-control advice; those decisions require current, location-specific guidance.
