A phone camera can supply the raw material for exercise tracking: body landmarks, detected frame by frame. It cannot count reps, judge form, or support health claims on its own. Those jobs require exercise-specific logic, deliberate camera framing, and testing across the conditions real users create. Apple’s and Google’s official documentation describes the building blocks for this work. It does not show how any particular app performs, so the outcomes of a finished product have to be measured separately.
How the pieces of a camera fitness app fit together
A camera-based workout app is a pipeline. Each stage has a distinct job, and a weakness in one stage shows up as a bad result in the next.
- Capture. The app reads frames from the device camera. Framing decisions are made here, before any model runs.
- Pose detection. A model returns body landmarks for each frame. Apple’s Vision framework documentation describes detecting up to 19 unique body points. Google’s legacy MediaPipe Pose guide lists 33 landmarks.
- Exercise logic. The app turns landmark movement into a state, such as “top” or “bottom” of a squat, and counts completed cycles. Neither platform supplies this step for you.
- Feedback and storage. The app shows counts or cues and decides what, if anything, is saved. This is where privacy obligations begin to matter most.
Choosing a pose-estimation option
The two options documented by the platform owners differ in scope and integration style. The table compares the factors that matter for a workout app. Where the official sources do not give a value, the cell says so.

Apple Vision
Apple Vision suits an iOS-first product. Apple’s documentation names automatic exercise tracking in a fitness app as an example use of body-pose detection. The landmark set is smaller than MediaPipe’s, so you should confirm that the points you need for a given movement, such as hips, knees, and ankles for a squat, are among the returned points.
MediaPipe Pose Landmarker
MediaPipe suits teams that need one pose pipeline across platforms. It accepts still images or video, and it returns both image-space landmarks and 3D world landmarks. The 3D output can be useful when angles are measured across a body, but whether it helps your specific exercises must be tested, not assumed.
Framing is a product requirement, not a setting
Apple’s guidance says the person’s height should ideally be at least one third of the image height, and that many key body regions should be visible. Those two conditions decide whether a model has enough body in the frame to work with. A movement that leaves the frame, such as a jump or a lunge filmed too close, produces missing landmarks.

- Set the phone so the full range of the exercise fits inside the frame, with the person’s full height at least a third of the image height.
- Check that the joints your logic depends on stay visible at the top and bottom of each rep.
- Show the user a framing check before counting starts, and block counting when key landmarks are missing.
- Test the same exercise from a front view and a side view, since many movements are only readable from one of them.
An adjustable phone tripod or smartphone stand is a practical accessory for this reason. This recommendation is an inference from the framing requirements. Neither source tested a mount or showed that one improves detection.
Turning landmarks into a rep counter
Pose detection returns positions, not repetitions. The counting logic is your code, and it is where most of the design decisions sit. The following approach is a common pattern, shown here as an illustration rather than a tested implementation.
- Define the movement. For a squat, choose the signal, such as the knee angle computed from hip, knee, and ankle landmarks.
- Smooth the signal. Raw landmarks jitter from frame to frame. A short moving average or similar filter reduces false transitions.
- Set start and end thresholds. Use different thresholds for going down and coming back up, so small wobbles near one threshold do not count as extra reps.
- Require a full cycle. Increment the count only after the user passes through the bottom position and returns to the top.
- Gate on confidence. Skip frames where the joints the logic needs are missing or unreliable, and tell the user why counting paused.
The threshold values are not provided by either platform. Each exercise needs its own values, and those values need to be checked against footage from the conditions your users will actually create.

Testing across the variation real users bring
Google’s pose-classification guidance recommends that exercise recognition be checked across different camera angles, environments, body shapes, and variations of the same exercise. Build a test set that covers those dimensions before you rely on any count.

- Camera angles: front, side, and an oblique angle, at the distances users will choose.
- Environments: bright and dim rooms, cluttered backgrounds, and a background that matches the person’s clothing.
- Body shapes and clothing: a range of heights, builds, and loose or dark clothing that can hide joints.
- Exercise variations: standard and wide-stance squats, full and partial range of motion, and slower or faster tempos.
- Edge cases: a second person in frame, a user leaving and re-entering the frame mid-set, and a rep that is started but not finished.
Record how the count compares with a manual count for each combination. The results describe your app under your conditions. They do not transfer to other apps or to other models.
What accuracy claims you can honestly make
No named statistic in the available sources quantifies the accuracy, retention, or outcomes of a camera-based fitness app. Any figure you publish has to come from your own measurements, with the camera setup, exercises, population, and date stated next to it.

A detected pose is not proof of clinical, biomechanical, or injury-prevention value. Describing an app as preventing injuries or correcting posture medically requires separate evidence that most builders will not have. A narrower, testable claim, such as “counts squat repetitions filmed from the side at a stated distance, with a stated error rate in our test set,” is one you can defend.
What Apple’s documentation says the use case is
Apple’s Vision documentation includes this sentence: “A fitness app could automatically track the exercise a user performs.” Apple presents it as an example of a possible use of body-pose detection. It is not an endorsement of any particular app, and it does not validate one.

Privacy and data use
Camera footage of a person exercising is sensitive, and the data choices you make early are hard to undo later. Apple’s published rules state that health and fitness data collected in health, fitness, or medical-research contexts may not be used for advertising, marketing, or use-based data mining, and may not be sold to data brokers. Those rules set a floor. They do not decide your architecture.

- Decide whether frames are processed on the device or sent elsewhere, and document the answer in your privacy disclosure.
- Store landmark data or rep counts instead of raw video whenever the feature allows it.
- State how long any saved footage is kept and give users a way to delete it.
Whether a given build complies with a specific privacy regime is a legal and implementation question. The platform documentation does not establish it.
What the platform sources do not establish
The official sources document APIs, landmark sets, and general implementation considerations. They do not establish clinical accuracy, injury prevention, calorie accuracy, support for every exercise or body type, app-store approval, or a particular privacy compliance result. Each of those needs evidence from your own product.
The documentation reviewed for this article carries no publication date for the Apple Vision page, and the MediaPipe Pose guide cited here is labeled legacy. Check current versions of both before you commit to a landmark set or an output format.
