Apache Jetspeed 2 can power a portal that brings independent portlet applications together on shared pages, but it is a dormant, legacy project—not a platform with ongoing Apache support. The right build path depends on whether you want to customize an existing portal, develop a portlet application, or compile Jetspeed itself. Check compatibility with your intended Java runtime and application server before committing to any of them.
What you can build with Jetspeed
Jetspeed 2 is an open-source portal framework written in Java and XML. It aggregates independent portlets into pages, allowing applications and data from different sources to appear within one portal. Its documentation describes page layouts and navigation, personalization, security, and deployment tools. These are documented capabilities, not assurances of current support or compatibility. See the Apache Jetspeed project page and its feature overview.
Before choosing a workflow, pin down the scope of your project:
- Customize a portal: Adapt portal-level assets such as skins and themes, add portlet applications, or optionally override portal components.
- Develop a portlet application: Build an independent application component intended to be deployed into a portal and displayed on its pages.
- Build Jetspeed from source: Compile the portal framework itself rather than only customizing a portal configuration.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
| Goal | Scope | Relevant guidance | Maintenance consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customize a Jetspeed portal | Portal assets and optional component overrides; the custom-build framework can add portlet applications. | Custom-build developer guide | Historical instructions for a dormant project; verify the target runtime and dependencies. |
| Develop and deploy a portlet application | An independent application component aggregated into portal pages. | Developer guide and feature overview | Confirm that the application and portal can run in your intended environment. |
| Build Jetspeed from source | The Jetspeed framework itself and its core components. | The source-build guidance referenced by the developer guide | The build instructions are historical; do not assume they work with current Java or application-server releases. |
Customize a portal without building the framework
The custom-build framework is for creating a Jetspeed-powered portal by overriding skins and themes, adding portlet applications, and optionally overriding portal components. The developer guide distinguishes this from building Jetspeed itself: a custom portal build does not require you to rebuild the framework. Follow the custom-build guide for that workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the scope explicit as you plan changes. A skin or theme change affects portal presentation; adding a portlet application brings another component into the portal. Overriding portal components reaches further into the framework and should be treated as a broader maintenance commitment.
Build Jetspeed from source
If your goal is to compile the framework, use the separate source-build instructions referenced by the developer guide, rather than treating the custom-build process as a source build. The guide identifies Maven as the command-line build tool and says that building Jetspeed from version 2.3.0 uses Maven 3.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That documentation was last published in 2016. Its Maven guidance does not establish compatibility with current Java versions, application servers, or dependency sets. Check the actual build and runtime requirements in the environment you intend to use before treating a successful build as evidence that the deployment will work.
Develop a portlet application
A portlet is an independent application component that Jetspeed can aggregate into portal pages. The project documentation describes portlet application deployment and tools for portal customization. If the portlet—not the portal framework—is your main deliverable, start with the developer guide and review the feature documentation for the portal context.

Apache’s documentation index collects the project’s user, administration, deployment, build, and developer guides, along with migration resources and APIs: Jetspeed documentation. The index is useful for locating historical material, but its presence does not indicate that the project is actively maintained.

The published material does not establish which current Java runtime, servlet container, or dependency set can build and run Jetspeed 2.3.1. Before starting a new implementation, verify those items against your own environment and decide how you will handle maintenance without project support. For an existing installation, assess compatibility and migration needs before changing its runtime or dependencies.
