Astro Content Collections let you keep structured content in your project—such as Markdown posts or JSON records—without adding a CMS. They give related entries a shared data model and APIs for querying and rendering them; they do not create the site’s routes, layouts, or presentation for you. The workflow below follows Astro’s v5 Content Layer API, introduced in Astro v5.

What Content Collections do—and what they leave to you

A collection groups related entries that share a structure. Local entries can be written as Markdown, MDX, Markdoc, YAML, TOML, or JSON; remote sources are also possible through a suitable loader. Astro describes collections as “the best way to manage sets of content in any Astro project” in its Content Collections guide.

Think of a collection as a structured content source, not a ready-made blog or CMS. You choose the content fields and organization, define how entries map to URLs, build listing pages, decide on taxonomy and pagination, handle redirects and URL permanence, and create the layouts that present the content. Keeping files in the project also means content changes typically travel through the project’s version-control and build workflow rather than a separate editorial interface.

Define a collection with a loader and schema

In the Astro v5 Content Layer API, collection definitions live in src/content.config.ts. Each collection needs a loader; a schema is optional but useful for checking expected metadata and improving TypeScript and editor support. For a blog with one Markdown file per post, an illustrative configuration is:

import { defineCollection } from 'astro:content';
import { glob } from 'astro/loaders';
import { z } from 'astro/zod';

const posts = defineCollection({
  loader: glob({ pattern: '**/*.md', base: './src/data/posts' }),
  schema: z.object({
    title: z.string(),
    description: z.string(),
    pubDate: z.coerce.date(),
  }),
});

export const collections = { posts };

With this pattern, place Markdown files under src/data/posts and give each file frontmatter with a title, description, and publication date. Keep the fields consistent across entries. The schema makes missing or malformed values easier to catch during development; z.coerce.date() accepts date-like input and converts it to a JavaScript date.

The built-in glob() loader is designed to create entries from files in directories. Astro’s loader reference documents its options and supported source patterns. Check that reference against the Astro version your project uses, since it is a living document and loader options have version-specific availability.

Use file() when records share a data file

If a single JSON, YAML, or TOML file contains multiple records, use the built-in file() loader rather than treating the file as one entry with glob(). The records need IDs so Astro can distinguish entries. file() can also take a custom parser for unsupported formats or nested JSON structures. The two loaders represent different source shapes, so choose based on whether your content is one entry per file or multiple entries in one file.

Remote data requires a loader

Collections can be populated from remote data, but that does not mean Astro includes a universal loader for every CMS or API. Use a community loader or write a custom loader for the remote source. When a custom loader writes entries to the data store, it is responsible for parsing and validating the incoming data; do not assume a collection schema alone validates arbitrary custom-loader input before it is stored. The content loader reference covers the loader model.

Query entries, render content, and create routes

A collection does not decide which URLs your entries receive. A typical blog uses a dynamic route for individual posts and a separate route for the listing page. In a statically generated site, the dynamic route generates paths from the collection entries, then queries and renders each matching entry. Use Astro’s versioned Astro content API for the exact query and rendering APIs available in Astro v5.

For an Astro v5 migration from legacy collections, the migration guide calls out two important changes: use id rather than the legacy slug behavior, and replace entry-level .render() calls with the imported render(entry) function. Those notes apply to migration from the older API; check the docs for the version you are actually running.

Sort explicitly when order matters

Do not rely on the order in which collection entries happen to be returned. Astro’s v5 migration guide warns that collection order may be nondeterministic. For a chronological index, explicitly sort by publication date; for an editorially ordered collection, define an order field and sort by it. This makes the intended order part of the site’s logic rather than an accidental consequence of file or loader order.

Choose collections for repeated content, not every page

Collections are a good fit when many entries share fields—for example, posts, case studies, recipes, documentation pages, product records, or people. Astro’s guide also identifies large related collections as a suitable use. Repeated content with a stable schema benefits from consistent validation and reusable listing and detail routes.

For one or a handful of unique pages, a direct .astro page may be simpler than creating a collection and route system. And for static files Astro should not process, such as PDFs, the guide recommends placing them in public/.

Build and deploy separately from content modeling

Choosing Content Collections does not commit you to a hosting provider. Astro’s deployment guide describes connecting a Git repository to a host that builds and publishes the project. The documented default output directory is dist/; common build commands are astro build and npm run build. See Astro’s deployment guide for the current deployment model and integrations.

Astro sites are static by default in the host guides for Netlify and Vercel. Static output is sufficient for many content sites. If a project needs on-demand rendering, it requires the matching platform adapter; see Astro’s on-demand rendering guide. The host documentation explains workflows and configuration, not a comparative pricing or performance ranking, so check each provider’s current terms for those decisions.
