You can use ToolJet MCP with an AI coding agent to scaffold a data-backed warehouse layout planner in a ToolJet workspace. The agent can create or modify app pages, components, queries, and data structures within the permissions of the personal access token you connect. The result is a starting point for organizing facility information and comparing layout options—not a validated warehouse design or a compliance certificate.

What ToolJet MCP can—and cannot—build

ToolJet MCP connects an AI coding agent to a ToolJet workspace. ToolJet documents a workflow in which the agent inspects available data sources, creates an app and queries, binds interface components to data, and returns links for editing and testing. The operations available to the agent are limited by the token owner’s permissions. See ToolJet’s MCP overview and app-generation guide.

This is useful for scaffolding the application layer: forms, tables, queries, and views over facility records. The reviewed ToolJet documentation does not establish that MCP calculates an optimal warehouse layout, runs CAD-grade geometry checks, simulates forklift paths, or certifies regulatory compliance. Treat those as separate engineering requirements unless you implement and validate a dedicated integration.

Define the warehouse assumptions before prompting

Gather the operating facts the planner should represent. A vague request such as “make a warehouse layout app” leaves the agent to guess at the data model and the meaning of a layout. Include units and constraints explicitly, and ask the agent to inspect existing workspace data sources before creating duplicate tables. ToolJet’s generation guide recommends naming the source and relevant entities in the prompt.

Choose a starter data model

ToolJet DB supports tables, primary and foreign keys, SQL, and app queries. The following is a proposed starter model for a warehouse planner, not a warehouse schema supplied by ToolJet. Adapt it to the facility and the records already available in your workspace. ToolJet’s ToolJet Database documentation describes its database capabilities.

Facility and zone records

Store facility dimensions and units separately from functional zones. A zone record can identify its purpose—such as receiving, storage, picking, or dispatch—and associate it with the facility. Separating these records makes it easier to update zone definitions without repeating facility-wide assumptions on every location.

Storage locations and constraints

A location record could include a zone, row or bay identifier, coordinates or grid position, storage type, capacity fields, and notes. Keep aisle and clearance constraints explicit rather than encoding a single assumed width into the app. You can also represent restricted areas and access points as records so they can be displayed and reviewed alongside locations.

Use the fields your operation can maintain accurately. If the workspace already has inventory or location data, ask the agent to inspect its structure and use the existing source where appropriate instead of inventing parallel tables.

Prompt the agent to create the app

Connect your AI coding agent to the ToolJet workspace using ToolJet’s documented MCP setup for that client. ToolJet authenticates MCP through a personal access token (PAT) scoped to a workspace. Its setup and generation guidance warns that an agent may read data reachable from the workspace while exploring, so use a workspace containing only data you are comfortable exposing to the connected agent. ToolJet says relevant events can be attributed to the PAT owner in audit logs, and that MCP and ToolJet AI operate by default only in the development environment. Check the current MCP overview and app-generation guide for setup details, since product documentation can change.

After connecting, give the agent the operating assumptions and a concrete first-version scope. For example:

Inspect the data sources available in this ToolJet workspace before creating tables. Build a warehouse layout planner for a facility measured in [units]. Use the existing source if it contains facility, zone, or location records; otherwise propose a small schema for facility dimensions, functional zones, storage locations, and aisle or clearance constraints. Create a layout page with a visual or tabular view of zones and locations, a facility/setup page, and forms or tables for editing locations. Add filters by zone and storage type, and a summary of zone occupancy and unresolved constraints. Do not assume a universal aisle width or claim the layout is safety-compliant. Show me the planned changes before applying them.

Replace the bracketed unit description with the facility’s actual units, and provide your real facility details and constraints. The prompt deliberately asks the agent to inspect existing sources first, distinguish proposed schema from existing data, and avoid making a compliance claim.

Build the interface around review and editing

A practical first version should make the underlying records easy to inspect and correct, not merely draw shapes on a screen. ToolJet documents components, layout updates, datasource queries, events, and JavaScript or Python logic for custom calculations. Use its component catalog and query schemas to ground the generated configuration rather than relying on undocumented component properties.

Layout and summary view

Show zones and storage locations in a visual or tabular layout representation. Include a summary for zone occupancy and unresolved constraints, but make clear which values come from stored records and which are computed. Do not present an unresolved constraint as automatically safe just because it is visible in a dashboard.

Location editing

Provide a table for reviewing locations and forms for adding or updating records. Filters for zone and storage type help users narrow a large facility to the part they are reviewing. Keep the fields for capacity, location identifiers, and notes accessible so staff can verify that the displayed plan reflects the intended operation.

Validate the app and test realistic changes

ToolJet documents MCP validation tools including lint_app_spec and validate_app. Ask the agent to lint its proposed app specification, apply validated changes in phases, and validate the resulting app. Then open the generated app using the returned edit and test links and inspect the actual behavior. Validation can catch app-configuration problems; it does not establish that a physical layout is safe or compliant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Review the proposed app changes and the data sources the agent intends to use.
  2. Ask it to run lint_app_spec on the planned changes and address any reported issues.
  3. Apply validated phases, then ask it to run validate_app.
  4. Open the generated app in ToolJet and test representative records and edits.

Use test cases that reflect likely data errors and layout changes, such as missing or invalid facility dimensions, a location outside the facility boundary, overlapping locations, an aisle marked as blocked, capacity beyond the intended limit, or changing a location’s zone or storage type. These are recommended tests, not results from a built or tested application.

Compare layouts with operational and safety constraints

A planner can help organize comparisons, but the relevant criteria depend on the facility’s work, materials, storage system, and handling equipment. Consider these axes when reviewing candidate arrangements:

  • Usable storage area: How much space remains for the intended storage and work areas?
  • Access and flow: How directly can goods move between receiving, storage, picking, and dispatch?
  • Equipment movement: Do aisle clearances and turning areas account for the actual handling methods?
  • Storage stability and capacity: Are locations suited to the stored materials, and are capacity assumptions explicit?
  • Clear routes: Do aisles, exits, docks, and emergency equipment remain accessible?

The FAA Inventory Management Guide discusses planning warehouse access and aisle space around function and handling methods. It is a planning reference, not a substitute for applicable facility codes.

For covered U.S. general-industry workplaces, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.176 addresses safe clearances where mechanical handling equipment is used, unobstructed and maintained aisles, marked permanent aisles, and stable, secure storage. OSHA states: “Permanent aisles and passageways shall be appropriately marked.” The agency’s warehousing guidance also discusses storage and rack conditions, emergency exits, and clear routes. These U.S. sources do not establish requirements for every jurisdiction or every facility, and they do not supply a universal aisle width to enter into a planner.

Keep permissions and deployment in scope

A PAT grants the connected agent access according to its owner’s permissions. Limit the token and workspace to the scope needed for the build, and consider what data the agent can reach while exploring. ToolJet notes that relevant platform actions can be attributed to the PAT owner in audit logs. Its documentation says MCP and ToolJet AI operate by default only in the development environment; verify the current environment and deployment behavior in your workspace before relying on that default.

ToolJet’s supported-tools page lists app, page, component, layout, datasource, query, ToolJet DB, event, validation, and permission operations. It also notes that deletion operations require explicit confirmation. Because tool inventories and product behavior can change, consult the current supported-tools documentation before granting access or designing a workflow around a particular operation.

What a prototype cannot decide for you

The planner can provide a shared place to enter dimensions, locations, constraints, and layout alternatives. It cannot replace facility-specific engineering or regulatory review. Applicable requirements depend on the jurisdiction, building and facility use, materials stored, equipment, and other conditions. Have qualified personnel review the actual plan before using it to direct operations, and do not treat a generated screen or successful app validation as proof of compliance.
