Choose a controlled textarea when React needs the current text as the user types; use defaultValue when the browser can manage edits after the initial content is set. The examples below add a visible label and keep the textarea in one mode for its lifetime.
Choose a textarea for plain text
React describes its built-in browser <textarea> component as a multiline text input. It is the straightforward choice for notes, comments, drafts, and other plain text. It does not provide rich-text formatting, selection transformations, or collaborative editing; those requirements call for a more involved editor design.
The main choice is who owns the field’s current value:

React’s textarea reference documents both patterns. Do not use value and defaultValue together, or switch between them during the field’s lifetime.

Build a controlled editor
In a controlled textarea, state is the source of truth. The change handler must synchronously copy the current DOM value into state. Initialize the state as a string and keep it a string throughout the component’s lifetime.

}Each keystroke updates state, so React can use the same text to render other UI. For example, put {text.length} in a nearby element to show a live character count, or pass text to a preview component. Keep the handler synchronous: delaying the state update can make typing behave unexpectedly. Also avoid changing the editor’s key on each edit or otherwise remounting it; remounting replaces the field instead of preserving the user’s editing session.

Use initial text without tracking every edit
If React only needs to provide starting content, use defaultValue and omit value and onChange:

}The browser owns subsequent edits in this version. React does not set a textarea’s initial text by placing JSX children between its opening and closing tags; use defaultValue for initial content instead.

Label the field and size it for use
Both examples associate visible text with the textarea using a matching htmlFor and id. You can also nest the textarea inside a <label>. React notes that a screen reader announces the label caption when the field receives focus. The rows and cols attributes give the browser a useful starting size; adjust them or apply CSS to fit the surrounding layout.
When contentEditable is not the same solution
An element with contentEditable lets the browser edit rendered content directly. React warns that React children do not behave normally inside an editable element: once a user edits that content, React cannot update it in the usual way. React’s common DOM components reference documents this behavior.

suppressContentEditableWarning only silences the warning for a library that manages editable content manually; it does not implement synchronization, selection handling, or accessibility. React also warns that untrusted HTML passed through dangerouslySetInnerHTML can create an XSS risk. Use this route only when formatted, browser-edited content is a genuine requirement and you have an approach for managing those concerns.

Quick checks if the editor misbehaves
- The text will not stay editable: if you pass
value, make sureonChangesynchronously updates state fromevent.target.value. - The field changes behavior after rendering: keep it controlled with a string
valuefor its whole lifetime, or uncontrolled withdefaultValue; do not switch modes. - The initial text is missing: for uncontrolled input, set
defaultValue, not JSX children inside<textarea>. - The field has no accessible name: add a visible label associated through nesting or a matching
htmlForandid.
