A small metadata-driven Node.js framework can replace repeated route registration with controller and route declarations that the application inspects at startup. The essential work is not the decorator syntax: it is defining a metadata contract, resolving it consistently, validating it before the server starts, and binding each resolved method and path to an HTTP adapter.

This tutorial outlines that framework core in TypeScript. It is an architecture example, not a production-ready replacement for an established framework; the code shape below is illustrative rather than a tested implementation.

What does metadata-driven routing change?

In a basic server, application setup often repeats the same wiring: create a handler, choose an HTTP method and path, then register the pair with the server. As the route count grows, the route map can become separated from the code that owns each handler.

A metadata-driven design moves route information into declarations on controller classes and methods. At startup, the framework reads those declarations, resolves each controller and handler, then registers the resulting method/path pair with an HTTP server adapter. This is a change in where configuration lives—not an automatic reduction in runtime work or a guaranteed productivity gain.

NestJS documents a related pattern: custom decorators attach data, and a Reflector retrieves it using a class or route handler as the target. Its documentation also illustrates that choosing whether handler metadata overrides or merges with class metadata is a real design decision. NestJS execution context and metadata

What should the smallest metadata contract contain?

Keep the first contract narrow. A controller needs a base path, and each route needs an HTTP method, a relative path, and the name of the instance method that handles the request.

Declaration Example value Purpose
Controller base path /users Shared prefix for the controller’s routes
Route method GET HTTP method sent to the adapter
Route path /:id Path relative to the controller prefix
Handler key getById Instance method invoked for a matched request

For example, the intended declaration might look like @Controller('/users') on a class and @Get('/:id') on its getById method. Treat the decorators as syntax around stored configuration; they do not themselves create a server route.

How can decorators record route metadata?

For a minimal implementation, store explicit metadata rather than depending on inferred parameter types. A class decorator can record its base path, while method decorators append route records to a registry keyed by the controller constructor. Conceptually, each record contains the HTTP method, relative path, and method name.

type HttpMethod = 'GET' | 'POST' | 'PUT' | 'PATCH' | 'DELETE';
type RouteDefinition = {
  method: HttpMethod;
  path: string;
  handlerName: string;
};

const controllerPaths = new WeakMap<Function, string>();
const controllerRoutes = new WeakMap<Function, RouteDefinition[]>();

function Controller(basePath: string): ClassDecorator {
  return (target) => {
    controllerPaths.set(target, basePath);
  };
}

function route(method: HttpMethod, path: string): MethodDecorator {
  return (target, propertyKey) => {
    const constructor = target.constructor;
    const routes = controllerRoutes.get(constructor) ?? [];
    routes.push({ method, path, handlerName: String(propertyKey) });
    controllerRoutes.set(constructor, routes);
  };
}

const Get = (path: string) => route('GET', path);
const Post = (path: string) => route('POST', path);

This sketch records declarations only. A real implementation should also decide whether paths are normalized, whether route metadata can be inherited, and what happens when a subclass overrides a decorated method. It should not silently assume that metadata inheritance or merging works as intended.

Why does TypeScript decorator configuration matter?

The TypeScript Handbook documents the legacy experimental decorator support and options such as experimentalDecorators and emitDecoratorMetadata. Its examples use reflect-metadata to expose emitted metadata at runtime. The handbook also warns that this metadata mechanism is experimental, may change, and relies on a library that is not part of the ECMAScript standard. TypeScript Handbook: Decorators

For the route contract above, explicit metadata is enough; emitted design types are not required to discover a method or route. That makes the core easier to understand and avoids presenting inferred types as runtime request validation. If the framework does depend on emitted metadata, document the supported TypeScript compiler settings, module mode, decorator semantics, and runtime import requirements as part of its toolchain.

How should bootstrap discover and bind routes?

The application should accept an explicit list of controller classes or instances. Avoid implicit file-system discovery in the first version: it adds module loading and environment assumptions without changing the core metadata flow.

  1. Register controllers. Pass controller types to the application or a dedicated registry.
  2. Create instances. Instantiate each controller, or delegate construction to a container if dependency injection is in scope.
  3. Read declarations. Retrieve the controller’s base path and route records from the metadata registry.
  4. Resolve paths and handlers. Combine the base and route paths, find the named method, and bind it to the controller instance so its this value remains correct.
  5. Validate the route map. Reject missing metadata, invalid handler references, and duplicate method/path pairs before accepting traffic.
  6. Register with the adapter. Call the server adapter’s method-specific registration function with the final path and resolved handler.

The server adapter boundary keeps framework metadata separate from a particular HTTP server. The framework can define a small interface such as “register a handler for this method and path,” while an adapter translates that contract to the server library in use. NestJS’s documentation shows that even application setup involves supporting packages and configuration in addition to decorators; its current documentation is the appropriate reference for its present setup guidance. What should fail before the server starts?

Startup is the right time to turn declaration mistakes into actionable errors rather than discovering them on a request. Include the controller name and route details in each error.

  • Missing controller path: a registered class has no controller declaration.
  • Missing route metadata: a route record is malformed or incomplete.
  • Handler does not exist: the recorded method name is absent from the controller instance.
  • Handler is not callable: the named property exists but is not a function.
  • Duplicate route: two declarations resolve to the same HTTP method and normalized path.
  • Ambiguous inheritance: a subclass and parent define conflicting routes, and the framework has no documented override rule.

Define path normalization once and use the same result for duplicate detection and adapter registration. For example, decide consistently whether a trailing slash is significant and how repeated separators are handled. Do not let the adapter’s undocumented behavior become the framework’s route policy.

How should inheritance and metadata conflicts work?

Choose a rule and make it visible. One simple initial policy is to prohibit inherited route metadata and require each registered controller to declare its own routes. Another is to allow inheritance but make a subclass’s route replace the parent declaration with the same method name. Either can work if it is predictable and validated.

More elaborate systems may merge class-level and method-level metadata, or let one override the other. NestJS’s reflection documentation demonstrates both override and merge approaches; the existence of those choices is a reminder that metadata lookup alone does not define the desired semantics. When is a custom framework worth building?

Building this core is useful when the goal is to learn how declarations become runtime behavior, or when a small, controlled application needs a narrow routing convention. The cost is that every capability outside the route map remains yours to design, test, document, and maintain: error handling, request parsing, validation, lifecycle hooks, dependency construction, testing seams, and graceful shutdown.

An established framework such as NestJS supplies a broader architecture and documented setup path, while imposing its own conventions and supporting-package surface. A small custom framework gives direct control and a useful learning exercise, but also transfers maintenance responsibility to its authors. The documentation cited here does not establish comparative performance, popularity, or a quantified productivity advantage, so those should not be assumed.
