To build one in Java, separate the product model, the persistence layer that stores it, and the interface that exposes those actions. Choose direct JDBC to learn SQL and database access, or Spring Data JPA when you want repository-based persistence and a shorter path to a working CRUD interface.
What CRUD means in a product app
CRUD stands for Create, Read (or Retrieve), Update, and Delete: the four basic operations on stored product records. In this project, a record represents a product, not a complete inventory or commerce workflow. Stock movements, orders, customer accounts, and business rules are separate features.
Choose a Java learning path
The right approach depends on what you want to learn. JDBC makes database calls and SQL more visible; Spring Data JPA provides a repository abstraction for common persistence operations. A user interface or API is a separate decision from the storage approach.

Spring’s JDBC guide lists Java 17 or later and Maven 3.5+ or Gradle 7.5+; framework prerequisites may change. The Vaadin guide demonstrates selecting Vaadin, Spring Data JPA, and H2 in Spring Initializr.

Define the product record
Start with an explicit, small model. An ID distinguishes one stored record from another; name and price give the app enough meaningful data to demonstrate CRUD. The CodeJava REST example uses those fields. Its MVC example also includes brand and country of manufacture, but those are optional extensions rather than prerequisites.
- ID: the stable identifier used to retrieve, update, or delete a particular record.
- Name: a human-readable product name.
- Price: a numeric value representing the product’s price. Decide on validation and numeric precision rather than accepting arbitrary input.
With JPA, an entity maps a Java class to stored data, and a repository provides the application with common persistence operations. With JDBC, the data-access layer issues SQL and maps returned rows into Java objects. In either case, keep storage logic separate from the UI or API so each layer has a clear responsibility.

Build the operations in a useful order
Whether the front end is a browser UI or REST API, implement the same four operations. First make a record, then confirm it can be found, change it, and remove it.
- Create: accept product details, validate them, and save a new record. The application or database should assign an ID rather than relying on the user to choose one.
- Read: provide a way to list products and retrieve an individual product by ID. A list verifies that records are being stored; retrieval by ID supports editing and deletion.
- Update: find the existing record, validate the changed values, and persist them. Define what the app does when the requested ID does not exist instead of silently treating it as a successful update.
- Delete: remove the selected record and make the resulting state clear in the UI or API response. Decide how a missing ID is reported.
For a UI, these actions can appear as a product form and a list with edit and delete controls. For an API, expose them as HTTP operations and return responses that distinguish successful requests from validation failures or missing records. Keep the two presentation choices distinct: a REST endpoint is not an HTML form.

Keep SQL values safely bound when using JDBC
Do not build SQL by concatenating user-provided product names, prices, or IDs into a query string. Use bound parameters. Spring’s JDBC guide recommends using ? for arguments so JDBC binds variables and helps mitigate SQL injection attacks. Its guide also says, in the context of resource acquisition, connection management, exception handling, and general error checking, that “The JdbcTemplate takes care of all of that for you.” This convenience does not remove the application’s responsibility to handle errors meaningfully.
Validate input and make failures understandable
Validation is an important next step beyond wiring the four operations. For a beginner version, decide what constitutes a valid name and price, reject malformed values before saving, and show a useful error rather than an unexplained failure.

- Invalid fields: explain which value needs correction, such as a missing name or a price that is not a valid nonnegative amount.
- Unknown ID: report that the requested product was not found when a read, update, or delete targets no record.
- Database error: avoid presenting a failed save or deletion as successful; handle the error at the application boundary and give the user an actionable message where possible.
These choices are application design decisions; the cited examples do not establish one required validation policy.

The CodeJava REST and MVC tutorials remain examples of how the model, persistence, and presentation layers can fit together, but their sample dependencies and Java-era imports are dated. Before reproducing setup instructions, compare them with current Spring documentation and the versions selected for your project. The official JDBC and Vaadin guides are the cited starting points for those respective approaches.
