A developer portfolio cannot guarantee interviews or a job, but it can make your skills and project experience easier to assess. Start with a focused GitHub profile, choose a few projects that fit the roles you want, and add a live portfolio site when seeing the work in a browser would help.
How to build a developer portfolio website
Think of the portfolio as evidence, not a project catalogue. A visitor should be able to identify the kind of work you do, open a few relevant examples, and understand what to inspect in each one. GitHub says a profile link can showcase skills and experience to potential employers; its recommendations are practical platform guidance, not evidence that a particular portfolio leads to a job.
Choose the presentation path that fits your work
| Consideration | GitHub profile and repositories | Separate live portfolio site |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor effort | Low when the profile README and repository descriptions explain what matters. | Can organize work into a guided presentation, but you must build and maintain the site. |
| Code visibility | Direct: visitors can inspect repositories and, where applicable, open-source contributions. | Depends on what you link or choose to show; the site itself does not replace code context. |
| Live demonstration | Repositories can link to a working website where one exists. | Can present browser-based work directly, with links to source code as useful. |
| Control over presentation | Uses GitHub profile and repository pages. | Offers more control over layout and how projects are introduced. |
| Maintenance | Keep profile content and selected repositories current and understandable. | Maintain the site as well as the projects and links it presents. |
| Best fit | Work whose implementation, collaboration, or repository history is important to inspect. | Work where a browser-based demonstration or a more tailored presentation adds useful context. |
These approaches can be combined: a profile can link to a separate site, and the site can link back to repositories. GitHub’s sources do not establish that either route produces more hiring success.

What should a GitHub portfolio include for a developer job?
Make the profile a landing page rather than an unfiltered archive. GitHub recommends selecting projects that show diverse skills relevant to a specific job search and says open-source contributions can highlight collaboration. Its suggested range is three to five pinned projects; treat that as GitHub’s guidance, not a universal hiring rule.

Write a concise bio
Use the short bio to state what kind of development work you do and, if useful, the role you are seeking. Avoid vague claims that do not help a visitor understand your focus.
Create a profile README
A profile README appears at the top of your GitHub profile. Use it to introduce yourself and provide relevant skills, experience, selected projects, or achievements. Keep the emphasis on information that helps someone evaluate your work. See GitHub’s profile overview.

Pin role-relevant repositories
Choose projects for the roles you are pursuing, not simply the newest or largest repositories. A mix of your own work and open-source contributions can be useful when it accurately represents your experience. GitHub’s advice is to pick projects that demonstrate diverse skills and fit the specific job search; it is platform guidance, not a promise of interviews.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake each project understandable at a glance
A visitor should not have to guess why a repository is included or how to explore it. GitHub’s resume guidance recommends concise descriptions, website links where available, and repository improvements that make projects easier to understand.

- Document complex or important code: Explain the parts that need context, and maintain tests where appropriate.
Build and publish a separate portfolio site
If you want a standalone site, GitHub Pages is one static-hosting option. GitHub Pages publishes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from a repository and can optionally run a build process. GitHub documents both a GitHub-hosted github.io address and custom-domain options in its GitHub Pages overview.
Use a GitHub-hosted address or a custom domain
A custom domain is optional; the GitHub-hosted address may be sufficient for a portfolio. Before adding a custom domain to a Pages repository, GitHub recommends verifying the domain to improve security and reduce the risk of domain takeover. Pages availability depends on the plan and repository visibility, so check the conditions in GitHub’s custom-domain documentation before choosing a publishing setup.

A practical sequence for assembling the portfolio
- Choose a target role or role family. Use it to decide which work is relevant rather than presenting every project you have.
- Write your bio. State your development focus and the kind of role you are seeking.
- Prepare the profile README. Introduce yourself and add relevant skills, experience, selected projects, and achievements where appropriate.
- Pin three to five suitable repositories. Follow this as GitHub’s recommendation, not as a guaranteed hiring formula.
- Add context to each repository. Write a concise description, explain what visitors can inspect, add relevant topics, and include a working-site link if one exists.
- Improve the repositories. Use descriptive names, consistent style, documentation for complex or important code, and tests where appropriate.
- Publish a separate site if it adds value. Consider GitHub Pages when you want a browser-based presentation; choose its hosted address or configure a custom domain according to your needs and Pages eligibility.
- Link to the work from your resume. Point readers directly to the portfolio or GitHub profile so they can reach the examples.
What a portfolio can—and cannot—show
A carefully selected profile and project set can make skills, implementation, and collaboration evidence easier to find. GitHub’s advice is to choose projects relevant to the particular job search; it does not establish that a portfolio increases interview rates or guarantees employment. Keep the presentation accurate: describe your own contribution to collaborative work and link only to demos that are available and working.
