With bootc, you can build and distribute a Linux host operating system as a container image, then install that image on a virtual machine or physical hardware. The installed system runs as a normal Linux host—not inside an application container. The practical workflow is to choose a bootc-compatible distribution image, customize it in a Containerfile, build and test it, and use the image’s supported installation route to deploy it.

What bootc changes about building an operating system

Traditional Linux installation media is not the only way to define a system. bootc uses an OCI container image as the build and delivery format for a host operating system. The image includes the kernel and the components needed to boot; deployment turns it into a machine’s operating system, rather than launching it as an application container. See the bootc project introduction.

This approach makes familiar container-image steps—installing packages, copying files, and configuring the system—part of an OS build. The bootc project says its CLI and API are stable, while qualifying that this describes the surface APIs, not necessarily the underlying logic. Check the project’s status documentation alongside your chosen distribution’s instructions.

Choose a bootc-compatible distribution first

There is no universal base image or package command that works for every bootc distribution. Select a distribution and verify its current bootc-compatible base image, supported CPU architecture, package manager, and installation method. The generic image-building guidance explains the pattern, but does not replace distribution-specific instructions.

Do not copy a generic example with an invented image name or package command and expect it to build. The base image and package names below must come from the distribution you intend to deploy.

Customize the OS in a Containerfile

Treat the operating system as a version-controlled build artifact. During the image build, install the required packages with the distribution’s package manager, copy in files, and add system configuration where it belongs. The bootc project describes package installation during a container build as an expected workflow.

FROM <distribution's bootc-compatible base image>
RUN <distribution package manager> install <packages> && <clean package metadata>
COPY <files> <destination>

This is a structural example, not a runnable recipe: replace each angle-bracketed item with the real image, commands, packages, and paths for your distribution. The bootc building guidance covers the generic Containerfile approach.

Separate image content from machine state

Image files are read-only by default after deployment. Changes intended to be consistent across machines—such as installed software and system files—belong in the image build. Machine-specific writable state is preserved in designated locations, including /etc and /var by default. This distinction is central to the bootable-container design described by the Bootable Container Images project.

Build the image and test it before deployment

Build with the container tooling supported by your selected distribution. The exact build command and image reference are distribution-specific; follow its bootc image instructions rather than assuming one universal command.

Test the resulting image in a virtual machine before writing to a physical disk. A VM lets you check that the system boots and that the services and access methods you need work without risking a machine’s existing storage. Tailor validation to the intended hardware and workload; the project’s installation model does not certify one universal test matrix.

The bootc installation overview describes the image-to-system transition. The Podman Desktop project’s bootc extension also describes workflows for VM, ISO-on-USB, and raw-image artifacts; available routes depend on the tools and distribution you choose.

Choose an installation route that fits the target

A container image alone is not a bootable disk. Boot components and installation logic must be present, and the installation tool bridges the gap between the image and a machine or filesystem. The upstream documentation describes these routes:

Route Target When it fits
bootc install to-disk A block device, such as a virtual disk or physical drive Direct installation with the basic layout supported by the image’s installer.
bootc install to-filesystem An existing filesystem More involved storage arrangements, including RAID, LVM, or LUKS, as directed by the installer documentation.
Generated image or installer artifact A VM disk image or physical installation media When the distribution or tooling provides a suitable artifact workflow. The Podman Desktop extension project documents VM, ISO-on-USB, and raw-image contexts.

These routes and their concepts are explained in the installation overview and the bootc-install-to-disk manual. Run bootc install from the image being installed; its embedded installation logic determines the available behavior. A distribution may also provide an external installer for more involved provisioning.

Take extra care with direct-to-disk installation

Installing to a disk can overwrite its contents. The to-disk manual includes a wipe example and requires privileged access to block devices. Before using a real drive, identify the target device carefully and verify that you can erase it. Prefer a VM disk for initial installation tests. A generated image file, a USB installer, and a direct write to a physical disk are different deployment choices—not interchangeable safety guarantees.

The current upstream manual documents bootc 1.11 using the Discoverable Partitions Specification by default. That version-specific detail may not match other versions or a distribution’s installer. The manual recommends the filesystem-oriented route for more complex layouts such as RAID, LVM, or LUKS; confirm the instructions for the version and distribution you will use.

Understand updates, rollback, and persistent state

The bootable-container design aims to make system updates atomic: a machine should use the old or new image rather than a partially updated mixture, with rollback to a prior bootable image where supported. Writable machine state is kept separately, including in /etc and /var by default. The design’s goals and state model are described by the Bootable Container Images project.

Disk partitioning is generally the responsibility of the installer or infrastructure, not an ordinary image update. Updating the OS image does not generally change deployment-time partitioning.

Update timing is distribution policy

Upstream’s bootc-fetch-apply-updates.service checks the source registry, downloads an updated image if one is available, and reboots. Its companion upstream timer is enabled daily, according to the service manual. That is not a promise that every distribution checks, downloads, or applies updates daily: operating systems can choose different defaults and can separate those stages.
