A budget-friendly small-business network starts with a count of the devices, spaces, and services it must support—not a shopping list or a guessed “typical” price. Once you know what needs wired connections, Wi-Fi, guest access, security, and ongoing support, choose the simplest setup that meets those requirements. A basic layout is an internet connection feeding a router/firewall, then a switch for wired devices and access points for Wi-Fi; some products combine these functions.
Plan around the business before choosing equipment
Write down what the network needs to connect and what it needs to protect. This keeps you from paying for unused capacity while helping avoid a setup that cannot support daily work.
- Count devices: include employees’ computers, printers, point-of-sale systems, phones, cameras, access points, and any other connected equipment. Separate devices that need Ethernet from those that can use Wi-Fi.
- Map the premises: note rooms, floors, walls, metal obstacles, and the areas where staff or customers need coverage. One centrally placed wireless device may be enough for a small, open space, but coverage depends on the actual building. Microsoft’s small-business network guide explains common equipment roles and placement considerations.
- List business needs: identify internet-dependent applications, guest Wi-Fi, remote staff or vendors, sensitive systems, uptime needs, expected growth, and who will maintain equipment and apply updates.
- Check the internet service: establish what connection the premises has and whether the ISP provides a modem or gateway. Confirm how that equipment fits with the router/firewall you plan to use.
For a multi-floor site, dense device use, important point-of-sale systems, or sensitive information, a site assessment may be more useful than buying extra hardware by guesswork.

| Component | Role in the network | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Modem or ISP gateway | Connects the premises to the internet service. A gateway may combine the modem with routing or Wi-Fi functions. | What the ISP supplies, which functions it performs, and whether it can work with the planned router/firewall. |
| Router | Moves traffic between networks and shares an internet connection among devices. | Routing, remote-access needs, management features, and vendor update support. |
| Firewall | Applies rules that control network traffic. | Whether its controls fit the business’s needs and can be kept current and supported. |
| Ethernet switch | Adds wired local-network connections for devices such as computers, printers, phones, and access points. | Port count and speed, management features, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) if connected devices need power through the cable. |
| Wireless access point | Provides Wi-Fi access to the local network. | Coverage and capacity for the intended areas, security options, and guest-network separation. |
| Ethernet cabling | Connects wired endpoints and network equipment. | Cable type, run length, routing, termination, and installation requirements for the actual premises and equipment. |
Microsoft describes these common functions in its equipment guide. Its older Wi-Fi throughput examples should not be treated as current speed expectations. Cat6 Ethernet cable is a common product search term, but the information here does not establish that Cat6 is required for every installation.
Choose a simple layout that meets the requirements
A straightforward office layout is ISP connection → router/firewall → Ethernet switch → wired devices and Wi-Fi access points. The router/firewall handles traffic between the business network and other networks; the switch supplies wired ports; access points provide wireless coverage where needed.

A router or gateway with built-in Wi-Fi and switch ports can reduce the number of separate devices. Before relying on those combined functions, verify that it has enough usable ports, the required guest isolation and management features, suitable coverage, and vendor-supported updates. Add separate access points or switches only when the layout or device count calls for them.

Set a practical security baseline
Secure the network as part of setup, not as a later add-on. The Federal Trade Commission’s small-business cybersecurity guidance recommends changing router defaults, keeping software updated, using WPA2 or WPA3, and separating guest or public access from the business network.
Recommended Free Tools
- Change the router’s default administrator credentials and use a strong Wi-Fi password.
- Disable router remote management when the business does not need it; avoid exposing administration to the public internet for convenience.
- Enable WPA2 or WPA3, as supported by the equipment and required by connected devices.
- Keep business-managed devices on the business network and provide a separate guest network for visitors or personal devices that need Wi-Fi.
- Apply firmware and software updates, and choose equipment with current vendor support.
- Use multi-factor authentication for sensitive systems and limit access to data and services to the people who need them.
- For remote staff and vendors, set device security requirements and provide secure remote access appropriate to the task. Limit vendor access to the scope and duration required.
The FTC states: “If you need Wi-Fi access for guests, employee personal devices, or the public, you can follow step-by-step prompts in your network’s admin portal to set up a separate ‘public’ network.” Availability and configuration depend on the equipment.

NIST’s Small Business Information Security: The Fundamentals, published in 2016, advises using current, updated, authentic, vendor-supported firewall software or hardware and keeping firewall protection in place. Its advice is a baseline, not a guarantee that a particular product remains supported; check current vendor documentation before buying.
Keep the network manageable as the business changes
Basic operations reduce the chance that forgotten devices, outdated software, or excessive access will quietly become a problem. The FTC’s Start with Security guide covers access limits, segmentation, monitoring, remote access, provider oversight, and software updates.
- Keep an inventory of network equipment, connected devices, and services, including who manages them.
- Review unfamiliar devices or activity and remove access that is no longer needed.
- Restrict access to sensitive systems and keep customer-facing or guest access separate where appropriate.
- Maintain incident-response, recovery, and continuity plans so staff know how to respond to a disruption.
- Set security expectations with IT or network providers and review their access to business systems.
Network segmentation can limit communication between groups of devices or protect sensitive systems. More advanced designs—including microsegmentation, VPN, zero-trust network access (ZTNA), and secure access service edge (SASE)—are options to evaluate when risk, scale, remote access, or compliance needs justify the added complexity. NIST SP 800-215 discusses these enterprise network approaches; it is not a shopping checklist for every small office. See the NIST publication for its scope.
