Use Playwright when you want screenshots inside browser tests and local visual assertions with baselines stored alongside your project. Use BrowserStack Screenshots when you want a hosted URL capture across selected browser, operating-system, or device configurations. If you need a shared cloud review and approval workflow for visual changes, consider BrowserStack Percy; it is a separate service, not the Screenshots API.

BrowserStack Screenshots vs Playwright: the practical difference

Playwright is a browser automation framework. Its Page API can save a screenshot, and Playwright Test can compare captures with local visual reference files. BrowserStack Screenshots is a hosted capture workflow: provide a URL and choose the browser and environment to render it in. The tools overlap in producing screenshots, but differ in browser execution, environment selection, and what happens after the image is captured.

Decision point Playwright BrowserStack Screenshots
Main purpose Browser automation, screenshot capture, and test assertions Hosted URL screenshots across selected environments
Capture and review Runs in the project’s test environment; local snapshot comparison is available through Playwright Test Uses BrowserStack’s hosted screenshot workflow
Environment selection Browser projects and the machine running tests affect the result Capture options include OS, browser and version, resolution, and device
Visual baseline Local reference files that the team maintains and updates The Screenshots API generates images; it is not itself a visual-baseline approval workflow
Best fit Screenshot checks integrated into scripted tests Remote captures of a URL against chosen browser and device configurations

BrowserStack Percy is a related but distinct option for cloud visual builds, comparisons, and baseline approval. It can complement Playwright rather than replace the automation suite.

How do I take a screenshot in Playwright?

Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project, then use the Page API to capture the page after navigating to the URL. This Node.js example is runnable in a project with Playwright installed:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
})();

page.screenshot() supports capture options such as a file path and full-page capture. Choose a wait condition that suits the page: network idle may not occur on sites with persistent requests, while capturing immediately after navigation can miss late content. For repeatable visual checking, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() rather than simply saving an image.

Use Playwright Test for visual assertions

toHaveScreenshot() creates a local reference image on the initial run; later runs compare new captures with that reference. Before comparison, the assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match one another. Playwright offers controls such as animation handling and custom styling to reduce variation from dynamic page elements.

Snapshot ownership is part of this approach: keep reference files with the project, review changes, and update expected images deliberately. Host operating system, fonts, controls, scrollbars, and other environment factors can alter rendered pixels. Playwright recommends using the same environment for baseline generation and comparison; its visual comparison guide says, “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

Can Playwright compare screenshots?

Yes. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() provides local visual assertions against snapshot files. It is suited to a team that wants screenshot checks in its existing test suite and is willing to version and maintain baselines in the project. It does not provide, by itself, Percy’s shared cloud build review and approval workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use stable test data and a consistent test environment when generating and checking baselines. If a screenshot diff appears, first determine whether the page genuinely changed or whether a different browser, OS, font, animation state, or timing caused the rendering difference. Update a baseline only after reviewing the change.

Can I capture the same URL across browsers with BrowserStack?

Yes. BrowserStack Screenshots accepts a URL and environment parameters that include operating system and version, browser and version, device and orientation, resolution, image quality, local testing, and wait time. This is useful when the task is to render a URL remotely against selected configurations rather than build a custom Playwright suite around the capture workflow. See the BrowserStack Screenshots API documentation for current request parameters and access requirements.

The API requires an Automate plan that includes browsers. Customers with Live-only subscriptions can use Screenshots through the webpage, according to BrowserStack’s documentation. The Screenshots API should not be mistaken for an approval-based regression system: for shared visual comparison and baseline promotion, evaluate Percy or another comparison layer.

When Percy belongs in a Playwright workflow

Percy can take screenshots from existing Playwright toHaveScreenshot() tests and compare them in cloud builds. Its documented integration uses the Percy CLI and Playwright SDK, and describes importing Percy’s drop-in in Playwright configuration. At the time the documentation was checked, it listed Node 18+, Playwright Test 1.60+, Percy CLI 1.32.6+, and Percy Playwright SDK 1.1.2+ as minimums; verify the current prerequisites in the Percy Playwright integration guide before installing, because version requirements can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Percy’s workflow gives reviewers a shared place to inspect visual differences and approve a build to promote a baseline. Approval is a human decision in the documented flow. Browser captures use Percy’s managed rendering infrastructure, and each browser capture counts as a separate screenshot against monthly usage. Because fonts, controls, scrollbars, and other OS-specific rendering can affect diffs, use explicitly managed BrowserStack Automate configurations when the comparison goal is a specific operating system. See Percy visual analysis and Percy cross-browser settings.

Choose by workflow, not by screenshot quality claims

  • Choose Playwright if browser tests already run in your project and you want capture and local visual assertions in the same suite.
  • Choose BrowserStack Screenshots if you need hosted URL captures across selected browser, OS, or device configurations.
  • Add Percy if a team needs cloud visual builds, shared review, and an explicit baseline approval step alongside Playwright.

Before committing to a workflow, identify the required browser/OS/device matrix, decide whether the team will own local or managed baselines, assign visual-change review, and account for the consistency of CI rendering environments. If using Percy, include the number of browser captures in monthly usage planning. Official documentation does not establish a universal speed or total-cost winner; these depend on the selected environments, usage, and current plan terms.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean website capture without installing and maintaining a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, its cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those cleanup steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
