JavaScript behavior, failed or blocked assets, authorization, and slow network requests can produce similar results. Start by identifying which BrowserStack product took the screenshot; Percy, Automate, and BrowserStack Screenshots have different capture paths and troubleshooting guidance.
First identify how the screenshot was captured
Do not apply a Percy setting to an Automate test or the Screenshots tool without checking that product’s documentation. BrowserStack’s detailed blank-or-loading capture guidance is for Percy. Automate offers logs to diagnose test sessions, while BrowserStack Screenshots has a separate troubleshooting FAQ.
- Percy: A visual snapshot is taken by calling
percySnapshot. Use Percy’s [troubleshooting guide](https://www.browserstack.com/docs/percy/troubleshoot/self-debug) for capture readiness, assets, responsive behavior, and full-page cases. - Playwright or Selenium Automate: Use the session’s visual, console, and network logs to find what happened before the screenshot command.
- BrowserStack Screenshots: Consult the [Screenshots troubleshooting FAQ](https://www.browserstack.com/support/faq/screenshots/troubleshooting-screenshots) for the relevant issue. Its listed questions include timeouts and basic authentication, but do not assume a fix without reading the answer for your case.
Record the product, framework, browser and version, viewport, capture command, and whether the result is a viewport or full-page image. These details help distinguish a product-specific issue from a page that is still rendering.
For Percy, make sure the page is ready before the snapshot
BrowserStack’s Percy guidance says to ensure the page is completely loaded before calling percySnapshot. If it is not, configure a wait for the content-bearing selector or use waitForTimeout as a diagnostic. A selector that appears when the needed content is ready is usually a more meaningful condition than an arbitrary delay; choose it and any timeout based on your application rather than treating one value as universal.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify a selector that only appears when the content you expect to capture is present.
- Wait for that selector before calling
percySnapshot, using the wait configuration supported by your Percy SDK and framework. - Run the capture again. If a delay makes the screenshot work, investigate what is delaying rendering rather than relying indefinitely on a long fixed sleep.
A page frame that appears while its main content is absent can also indicate failed data or asset requests, not just an early capture. Confirm the cause in logs before changing the wait.
Use JavaScript mode as a diagnostic, not an automatic fix
Percy documents JavaScript-enabled and JavaScript-disabled capture behavior. Comparing the two can help determine whether page scripts affect the result. Disabling scripts is not necessarily a solution: JavaScript applications may depend on them to render any meaningful content. If the disabled-script capture differs, inspect runtime errors and the page’s rendering requirements before choosing a configuration.
Check missing assets, authorization, and request failures
If the page background or frame renders but content, fonts, or styling do not, inspect the generated Percy snapshot or build for missing resources. BrowserStack’s guide recommends checking the following:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Failed or slow requests: Look for CSS, font, image, and data requests that failed, remained pending, or timed out.
- Host access: Confirm required resource hosts are allowlisted where applicable.
- Authentication: Verify that the captured session can access the page and its assets. Check authorization configuration rather than assuming the screenshot service shares your logged-in browser session.
- Image resolution: Compare captured image resolution with the device-pixel-ratio configuration.
- Responsive assets: Check
srcsetselection and viewport-specific resources. - Lazy loading: Determine whether an image or other content only loads after it enters the viewport or after scrolling.
A wholly blank or loading image points first toward readiness or rendering, while missing styling or individual content can point toward unavailable resources. Appearance alone does not establish the cause; use request and runtime evidence.
For Automate, locate the failing command in the logs
In an Automate session, compare the screenshot with the command timeline. BrowserStack’s [Playwright debugging documentation](https://www.browserstack.com/docs/automate/playwright/debug-failed-tests) describes visual logs as screenshots at each Playwright command, console logs for JavaScript output, and HAR-format network logs for requests, responses, and latency.
Playwright logging settings
- Set
browserstack.debug: trueto enable visual logs. - Set
browserstack.networkLogs: trueto enable network logs. - Use console logs to look for JavaScript errors near the screenshot command.
Check BrowserStack’s current framework and browser constraints before combining logging options. Its documentation notes that Firefox network logs may require ignoreHTTPSErrors: true, response data may be unavailable in non-Chromium browsers, and using local plus network logs together over WSS may temporarily cause sessions to fail.

Selenium logging settings
BrowserStack’s [Selenium debugging documentation](https://www.browserstack.com/docs/automate/selenium/debugging-options) says visual logs are disabled by default and can be enabled with debug: true. Console logs default to errors and, in the documented context, currently work only on Chrome. Enable network logs with networkLogs: true.
The same Selenium documentation states that text logs are retained for 60 days and other logs listed on that page for 30 days, counted from generation. Retention policies can change, so consult the current documentation when investigating an older session.

For a page you can reproduce in Chrome, the DevTools Network panel can show request status, type, initiator, size, and timing after a reload. Its Screenshots tab can capture thumbnails during page loading and associate a thumbnail with network activity at that moment. This can help distinguish a screenshot taken before the page drew content from one where a required request failed or remained pending. Branch for mobile-width and full-page failures
Only a particular mobile width is wrong
If the result fails only at certain widths, compare the viewport and responsive DOM or asset behavior rather than assuming a general blank-page problem. Percy’s guidance discusses multiple DOM support when the DOM is wrong across mobile widths, device-specific DOM loading (defer upload) for incorrectly captured responsive pages, and retrying when a resource may have failed once. These are Percy-specific options; use its documentation to confirm which applies to your SDK and setup.
Full-page capture misses lazy content or scrolls incorrectly
For Percy captures, scroll before the snapshot when content is lazy-loaded. If the page is non-scrollable or the full-page image repeats patterns, check for internal scrolling and the PercyCSS or scroll-scope guidance. A viewport capture and a full-page capture exercise different page behavior, so compare them when only one shape is affected.

| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Entire image is blank or stuck loading | Confirm the product and capture command; for Percy, wait for page readiness and the expected content selector, then inspect script errors and requests. |
| Page frame appears, but text, styles, or images are missing | Inspect failed CSS, font, image, and data requests; verify host access, authorization, responsive assets, and resolution settings. |
| Only one browser or width fails | Compare browser/version, viewport, responsive DOM, and viewport-specific assets; inspect logs for that exact session. |
| Only full-page output is wrong | Check lazy loading, scrolling before capture, internal scroll containers, and whether the issue also occurs in a viewport capture. |
| BrowserStack Screenshots reports “Timed Out” or basic authentication fails | Open the relevant entry in the [Screenshots troubleshooting FAQ](https://www.browserstack.com/support/faq/screenshots/troubleshooting-screenshots). The FAQ lists these topics, but the specific answer should be checked there rather than inferred from Percy behavior. |

When to escalate
If the checks do not isolate the cause, give BrowserStack support the product and framework, session or build identifier, browser/version, viewport, capture type, command timeline, and relevant console or network evidence. Compare a working and failing capture across those same details; this is more useful than reporting only that the screenshot is blank.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “Timed Out” mean in BrowserStack Screenshots?
The BrowserStack Screenshots troubleshooting FAQ lists a “Timed Out” question, but the applicable explanation depends on that product’s FAQ answer. Check the entry there rather than applying Percy or Automate guidance.
Why does basic authentication not work in BrowserStack Screenshots?
BrowserStack lists this as a Screenshots FAQ topic; consult its answer for the exact capture flow. Do not assume Percy’s authorization configuration applies to the Screenshots tool.
