BrowserStack offers two ways to test mobile apps on real iOS and Android devices: App Live for interactive manual checks and App Automate for scripted tests. Choose between them based on whether a person needs to explore a build or a test suite needs to run repeatedly across a device matrix.
What BrowserStack does for mobile testing
BrowserStack provides access to real mobile devices hosted in its data centers, so a team can test without buying and maintaining every phone and tablet it wants to cover. The service is not a single testing mode: App Live and App Automate serve different parts of a release process.
- App Live provides interactive, manual sessions on real devices. A developer, tester or product manager can install a build, use the app, check layouts and behavior, and investigate a problem directly.
- App Automate runs scripted tests on real devices. It supports frameworks including Appium, Espresso and XCUITest, making it suited to repeatable checks in a test suite or CI workflow.
Both can help expose differences caused by operating-system versions, device manufacturers, screen resolutions and orientations. They do not remove the need to select a representative device matrix: the useful coverage is the set of devices and software versions that match your users and release risks, not a headline count by itself.
App Live vs. App Automate: which one should you use?
| Need | Use | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Explore a new build, reproduce a reported issue, or inspect behavior interactively | App Live | Manual sessions on real devices, with device and debugging features described in BrowserStack’s product materials. |
| Run regression tests repeatedly across a device and OS matrix | App Automate | Automated real-device testing with supported frameworks such as Appium, Espresso and XCUITest. |
| Do both manual investigation and repeatable regression testing | Both | Use automation to find regressions consistently and interactive sessions to examine failures or edge cases. |
App Live is not a substitute for a well-maintained automated regression suite; App Automate is not a hands-on exploratory session. Teams often need both when they want broad repeatable checks and a way for a person to inspect a particular device or failure.

What device coverage means in practice
BrowserStack’s App Automate materials advertise more than 200 device-OS combinations, while product and pricing materials advertise more than 30,000 real iOS and Android device units. These are vendor headline figures, not a promise that every model, OS version or unit is available to every customer at every time. Before choosing a plan, check the live device catalog and confirm that your required combinations, region and concurrency are included.
Build a device matrix around actual risk rather than trying to test every combination. For example, include the oldest OS version you support, the current version, major device manufacturers relevant to your audience, small and large screens, and both portrait and landscape if the app supports them. Prioritize devices associated with defects or high usage. If a device is not in the available catalog or your plan does not include it, the advertised total does not solve that coverage gap.
- OS compatibility: check the exact iOS or Android versions your release supports.
- Manufacturer differences: include the OEMs that matter for Android; behavior can vary even when OS versions match.
- Display variation: account for resolution, screen size and orientation, especially for layout-sensitive screens.
- Execution capacity: match the number of parallel tests to suite duration, release cadence and budget.
- Availability: verify the current catalog and entitlements before committing to a specific device matrix.
How to test a mobile app with BrowserStack
- Prepare a build. For direct upload, the documented workflow supports APK, AAB or IPA builds. Alternatively, use a supported distribution source such as Firebase, TestFlight, Play Store or App Store.
- Decide whether the test is manual or automated. Use App Live to explore the app on a selected real device. Use App Automate when you have a scripted suite and need repeatable runs.
- Select devices and OS versions. Start with the combinations tied to your supported platform range, user base and known risks. Check current availability and the plan’s parallel capacity.
- Run the session or suite. In App Live, interact with the app and reproduce the behavior under investigation. In App Automate, submit the suite through your chosen supported framework and CI setup.
- Inspect the evidence. BrowserStack’s mobile-testing materials describe device and text logs, network information, screenshots and video recordings. Use these artifacts to identify whether a failure came from app behavior, a network condition, a device-specific issue or the test itself.
- Repeat narrowly, then broaden. Reproduce a failure on the original target, then try related OS versions or devices to determine whether it is isolated or systemic. For regression checks, keep the device matrix intentional so added coverage remains maintainable.
BrowserStack also describes concurrent runs and gesture automation in its mobile-testing materials. The exact controls and limits depend on product and plan, so verify current documentation and entitlements for the workflow you intend to use.
Testing local, staging and protected environments
App Live documentation says Local Testing can connect a test session to internal servers, including environments behind a proxy, firewall or VPN. This makes it possible to test a build against a staging or pre-production system before that system is public.

Before a session, confirm that the local connection is configured for the network boundary and access policy your organization uses. Check that the test device can reach the intended host, that any required authentication works in the app, and that the build points to the correct environment. For sensitive systems, agree on access controls and data handling with your security team rather than assuming a testing connection changes your organization’s obligations.
How much does BrowserStack mobile testing cost?
BrowserStack’s pricing page search results in 2026 displayed the annual-billing examples below. They are examples from a changing pricing page, not a guaranteed current quote; confirm the current price, billing term, product scope and plan limits before purchase.
Rank #4
| Pricing example | Displayed price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| App Live Freelancer | $12.50 per month | Annual-billing example shown in BrowserStack pricing materials in 2026. |
| Individual mobile plan | $39 per month | Example shown in BrowserStack pricing materials in 2026; confirm which product and limits apply to the selected plan. |
| Device Cloud | $199 per month | Example shown in BrowserStack pricing materials in 2026; plan scope and limits should be checked on the current pricing page. |
The price that matters is the total for your use case, not just the entry figure. Compare whether a plan includes the manual or automated product you need, how many parallel sessions or tests it allows, which devices are accessible, and whether any add-ons or team and enterprise terms apply. If your team has a fixed release schedule, estimate the concurrency needed to finish a suite on time; a lower monthly price can be a poor fit if its limits slow the workflow.

Remote device testing is most useful when a failure produces enough context to reproduce it. BrowserStack describes artifacts including screenshots, video, device and text logs, and network information. Decide in advance which artifacts your team needs to diagnose flaky or device-specific failures, and make sure they are available under your product and plan.

Concurrency can shorten elapsed test time, but it does not by itself make a test suite reliable. Keep tests deterministic, separate app defects from flaky scripts, and retry failures selectively rather than treating every rerun as proof of a pass. Retain a clear record of the device, OS version and build used for a failure so the team can reproduce it.
BrowserStack’s 2025 security whitepaper states that its Android and iOS inventory consists of real devices hosted in BrowserStack data centers and that BrowserStack has no access to customers’ test data in test sessions. That is a vendor statement, not a replacement for a current security review. For production-like or sensitive test data, confirm current retention, isolation, compliance and data-residency terms, along with any private-device requirements, in the latest documentation and contract.
When BrowserStack is a fit—and when it is not
It is a fit when
- You need access to real iOS or Android devices without maintaining a large in-house inventory.
- You need interactive manual sessions, scripted mobile automation, or both.
- You want to test an internal or staging application through Local Testing.
- Your team can choose its target devices from the current catalog and the plan meets its concurrency needs.
Look elsewhere or supplement it when
- You need a specific device or OS combination that is unavailable to your account.
- Your policy requires a particular device custody, isolation or data-residency arrangement that the applicable service terms do not meet.
- Your task is only to produce website screenshots, rather than operate or automate a native mobile app. A screenshot API is a different tool category and does not replace real-device app testing.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual task is capturing a web page as an image or PDF—not testing a native iOS or Android app—ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a mobile device-testing cloud. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; its clean-shot options accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Each step can be disabled.
Example cURL request (replace the key with your ScreenshotNeo API key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing; responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
