BrowserLinux was a small Puppy Linux derivative built to make web browsing the main task. Its historical releases bundled Firefox with a few desktop utilities and could boot from CD or USB, but the available records do not establish a trustworthy current download or ongoing security updates.
What was BrowserLinux?
BrowserLinux was a narrowly focused Linux distribution based on Puppy Linux, rather than a modern browser-only operating system. Its maintainer described it in 2010 as “a small Puplet for surfing the web” in the Puppy Linux forum. Contemporary coverage likewise presented it as a simple desktop with the browser at its center.
The project’s documented 501 release used Puppy Linux 5.1 as its base. The Puppy Linux version list records that relationship and an approximate image size of 93 MB; the page does not state when that entry was published: Puppy Versions List.
What software did it include?
Firefox was the main application, but BrowserLinux was not limited to a browser window. Softpedia’s listing describes a basic graphical desktop with a music player, PDF viewer, ROX-Filer file manager, Geany text editor and terminal emulator, alongside Firefox: Softpedia’s BrowserLinux listing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Bundled browser versions varied across the releases and reports. Liliputing’s December 2009 coverage described Firefox 3.5.5. Later records for BrowserLinux 501 list Firefox 5.0.1 and Flash 10.3. Those are historical software versions, not evidence of current support or safe browsing today.
How big was it, and how was it distributed?
Reported image sizes depend on which version a source covered; they should not be treated as one universal BrowserLinux size.

Historical listings describe a live CD, and Liliputing reported that users could prepare a USB flash drive with UNetbootin. The same article suggested trying the live system before installing it to a hard drive. These are period instructions, not a verified setup procedure for a current image or modern computer.
Was it intended for older or low-power computers?
Yes, that was part of its historical appeal. Liliputing suggested BrowserLinux might suit a netbook or another low-power machine, reasoning that a lightweight system with fewer services could leave more resources for the browser. That is a period assessment, not a measured performance result or a hardware guarantee.

The available sources do not give verified minimum requirements for memory, processor, graphics, wireless networking or storage. There is not enough evidence to specify a computer on which BrowserLinux will work reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you download and use BrowserLinux safely today?
Current availability and safety are unverified. The latest release record located is BrowserLinux 501, which Softpedia lists with an update date of September 9, 2011. The available records do not confirm a current official download, image checksum, later release, modern hardware compatibility or security maintenance. That absence does not prove the project was definitively discontinued, but it means an old download should not be treated as a maintained system for ordinary internet use.

In particular, the historical Firefox and Flash versions are obsolete. Without evidence of maintained software and a verified image source, BrowserLinux is best understood as a historical project rather than a safe, supported choice for web browsing now.
