Short answer: Browserless and Hyperbrowser both provide managed cloud browsers for Playwright- and Puppeteer-style automation, scraping, testing and AI-agent workflows. Neither is a universal winner. Choose Browserless when deployment control, an existing browser-automation stack or Docker operation is central; choose Hyperbrowser when its session-time, proxy-data and concurrency model fits your workload and you prefer its agent and extraction tooling. Validate costs and performance with your own pages before committing.

What each service provides

Browserless

Browserless describes its service as “managed headless browsers for automation.” Its documentation covers Playwright and Puppeteer connections over WebSocket, BrowserQL, REST and GraphQL endpoints for tasks such as scraping, screenshots and PDFs, plus AI and agent integrations. You can run workloads in Browserless shared cloud, request a private deployment on dedicated Browserless-operated virtual machines, or operate a Docker deployment yourself. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance guarantees. See the Browserless overview.

Hyperbrowser

Hyperbrowser presents cloud browsers for browser automation, AI-agent operations and data extraction, with SDKs, REST APIs and geo-targeted proxy choices. The product and pricing pages reviewed establish a cloud service; they do not establish whether customer-operated self-hosting is available or on what terms. See Hyperbrowser’s product page.

How the billing models change your decision

Browserless units and reconnects

Browserless defines one unit as up to 30 seconds of browser time for one browser connection. A 31-second session consumes another unit, and reconnecting creates a new browser connection with a fresh unit charge. Its displayed overage rates are $0.0020 per unit for Prototyping, $0.0017 for Starter and $0.0015 for Scale. Successful CAPTCHA solves are listed at 10 units. Proxy traffic is additional: residential traffic is 6 units per megabyte and datacenter traffic 2 units per megabyte. Confirm the current definitions and overages on the pricing page.

Hyperbrowser credits, seconds and proxy gigabytes

Hyperbrowser states that one credit equals $0.001. Active browser sessions consume 100 credits per hour ($0.10 per hour), billed by the second. Proxy data is listed at 10,000 credits per gigabyte ($10/GB). A workload that keeps one browser open for two hours therefore uses 200 session credits before proxy traffic or other metered items; a workload that downloads 3 GB through the proxy adds 30,000 proxy credits. These are arithmetic examples using the vendor’s published meters, not a quote for your account.

Build a workload model before comparing plans

Record, for a representative month:

  • Number of browser sessions and average active seconds per session.
  • Reconnects, retries and parallel sessions.
  • Proxy type and expected megabytes or gigabytes transferred.
  • CAPTCHA-solving requirements, if any.
  • Required retention, geography, browser version and peak concurrency.
  • Whether annual commitment, overages or a custom contract is acceptable.

Then calculate each provider’s included allowance and excess usage. A low headline subscription can be expensive for long sessions or heavy proxy traffic, while a larger plan may be wasteful for short, bursty jobs. Do not call either service cheaper without stating these assumptions.

Deployment, control and licensing

Browserless operating choices

Shared cloud minimizes infrastructure work. A private deployment places browsers on dedicated virtual machines operated by Browserless. Docker self-hosting puts operations, scaling, patching and observability in your team’s hands. Those choices affect data location, network access, incident response and compliance evidence.

Hyperbrowser deployment scope

The reviewed Hyperbrowser pages document a managed cloud product. They do not settle the availability or terms of a customer-operated deployment, so obtain written answers about data residency, private networking, retention, dedicated capacity and support if those requirements matter.

Docker license review

Browserless says its open-source Docker image is licensed under SSPL-1.0 and that closed-source commercial products or closed-source CI systems require a commercial license; it also describes separate licensed and Enterprise builds. Read the current licensing and self-hosted terms and obtain legal advice for your distribution model. This article does not provide a legal conclusion.

Performance: what is known and what is not

In a comparison published by Browserless on January 12, 2026, Browserless reported that Hyperbrowser connected fastest, while Browserless was faster for page creation and navigation in its own Puppeteer benchmark. Because the interested party designed and published that test, it is not independent validation. Results may change with geography, page complexity, browser version, proxy, plan and flow. Treat it as a hypothesis, not a product ranking.

Run a fair acceptance test

  1. Choose the pages and actions that dominate your production workload, including login, downloads, infinite scroll and bot challenges where applicable.
  2. Use the same browser version, region, proxy class, viewport and concurrency on both services.
  3. Warm up connections, then measure connection time, page creation, navigation, success rate, timeout rate, bytes transferred and total billed usage.
  4. Repeat at realistic peak concurrency and across several time windows.
  5. Store screenshots, HTML or structured results and error classifications so a faster but less reliable run is not mistaken for a better one.

Which provider fits common scenarios?

Choose Browserless first when

  • Your application already uses Playwright or Puppeteer and needs a managed WebSocket browser with minimal code changes.
  • You need a documented choice among shared cloud, provider-managed private deployment and customer-operated Docker.
  • You want BrowserQL, REST/GraphQL endpoints, screenshots or PDFs alongside full browser sessions.
  • Your team can manage SSPL-1.0 and commercial-license implications for self-hosted use.

Choose Hyperbrowser first when

  • Your design centers on its agent, extraction or SDK interfaces rather than direct browser control.
  • Session duration, per-second billing, proxy gigabytes and stated concurrency limits map cleanly to your forecast.
  • You need the geo-targeted proxy options described on its product materials.

Escalate to a proof of concept when

  • You require a specific data-residency, private-networking or retention commitment.
  • Automation reconnects frequently, because Browserless bills each new connection as a new unit.
  • Proxy traffic or CAPTCHA solving dominates your costs.
  • Your workload must sustain a concurrency level not clearly stated on the current plan page.

Operational checklist before production

  • Set explicit navigation and action timeouts; classify timeouts separately from target-site failures.
  • Reuse a browser connection only when isolation and site policy permit it; otherwise model reconnect costs.
  • Cap concurrency to the purchased limit and add backpressure rather than allowing unbounded retries.
  • Record provider request IDs, session duration, proxy bytes, retries and final outcome for each job.
  • Use idempotent job keys so a retry cannot duplicate a purchase, form submission or export.
  • Keep secrets in a server-side secret store, not in browser URLs or client-side code.
  • Review target-site terms, robots rules, privacy obligations and authorization before scraping.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative for screenshots and PDFs

If your requirement is a clean website screenshot or PDF rather than a long-lived interactive browser session, try ScreenshotNeo first. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with the response identifying the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

A practical selection process

  1. Document your browser actions, session seconds, proxy data, concurrency and compliance constraints.
  2. Request current plan, overage, retention, region and support terms from each vendor.
  3. Run the same acceptance suite against both services and record cost as well as latency and success.
  4. Decide whether shared cloud, private deployment or customer-operated infrastructure is required.
  5. Start with a capped production rollout, monitor unit or credit burn, and set alerts before enabling retries at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Browserless and Hyperbrowser interchangeable APIs?

They address similar managed-browser use cases, but their interfaces, abstractions and billing meters differ. Plan an adapter or migration proof of concept rather than assuming drop-in compatibility.
