If a Browserless screenshot shows the wrong Indian region, first find out which location signal the website is using. Check the session’s public IP, then configure any browser geolocation, locale, and timezone the test requires—and apply browser settings before navigating. An India proxy changes network egress; browser emulation changes what the page sees through browser APIs. Neither guarantees a particular site will use that signal.
Why a screenshot can show the wrong region
“Location” can mean several different things to a website. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
- Public IP address: The site may infer a country or region from the connection’s egress IP. Browserless documents that omitting proxy configuration can use the host machine’s IP; its BaaS launch options also describe country proxy selection. See Browserless launch parameters.
- Browser geolocation: A page can request coordinates through the browser’s Geolocation API. Playwright context geolocation simulates coordinates, and the page needs geolocation permission to access them. This does not route traffic through an Indian IP.
- Locale and timezone: These affect browser language preferences and reported time zone. They are presentation signals, not evidence of the connection’s IP location. Playwright documents these context options in its emulation guide.
- Site state and timing: A website may also use a saved region choice, cookies, local storage, account settings, or URL parameters. A navigation made before browser overrides take effect can use defaults. The target site’s actual selection logic is unknown until you test it.
Browserless says a browser without proxy configuration may use the host machine’s IP; its BaaS documentation also describes country selection and random proxy behavior when country selection is omitted. Do not assume the screenshot server’s physical location tells you the session’s egress IP: inspect the IP through the same browser session.
Diagnose the signal before changing settings
- Record the capture route. Note whether your code connects to a Browserless REST endpoint, a standard Puppeteer or Playwright WebSocket session, or a stealth route. Proxy defaults and available parameters can differ by route.
- Check egress in that session. Navigate to a trusted IP-information page or inspect a region indicator provided by your target site. Browserless’s proxy documentation includes examples that visit an IP-information page. Record the observed IP and country rather than inferring them from the Browserless hostname.
- Check the browser context. Log the effective locale, timezone, configured coordinates, and whether geolocation permission was granted. Compare these with the intended test profile.
- Change one signal at a time. Capture the same URL after changing only the IP route, only geolocation, or only locale/timezone. Record the displayed region alongside the IP, browser settings, URL, and context state. This makes it easier to identify which change matters for this site.
Route the session through India when the site uses IP location
Use a Browserless proxy option that selects India when the target’s region follows public IP. The BaaS launch-options documentation describes country selection with proxyCountry; check that your specific endpoint and account support the parameter, and follow the current documented syntax for your connection method.

Country-level routing does not necessarily select a particular city. Browserless’s proxy documentation says city targeting requires its Scale plan (500k+ units), while lower plans receive a 401 for this feature. This is a volatile plan detail, not a guarantee that any particular Indian city is available: check the current plan and city list before depending on city-level results.
Keep the IP consistent when the workflow needs it
Browserless documents that plain REST endpoints and standard Puppeteer/Playwright WebSocket sessions can use a random proxy node by default. Its documentation describes proxySticky=true to keep the same IP across a session where possible. Stealth routes, BrowserQL, unblock, and scrape routes are described as sticky by default. Stickiness can help avoid an IP changing during a session, but it does not select India; choose the country separately.
Review the current Browserless proxy options and route behavior before using a parameter, since the endpoint and account tier affect availability.

Set browser location, locale, and timezone before navigation
For Playwright, configure the browser context before creating or navigating the page. The following runnable pattern assumes browser is an already-connected Playwright Browser and targetUrl is the URL to capture:
const context = await browser.newContext({
locale: 'en-IN',
timezoneId: 'Asia/Kolkata',
geolocation: { latitude: 19.0760, longitude: 72.8777 },
permissions: ['geolocation'],
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(targetUrl);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });
The example coordinates are Mumbai, India; replace them with the location your test requires. The settings emulate browser signals only. If the site uses IP geolocation, route the network through an appropriate India proxy as a separate step. A website may ignore one or more of these signals.

Browserless Enterprise documents context overrides and emphasizes applying them before the first navigation: “Issue these commands before your first page.goto() call. Any navigation that happens before the overrides are in place will use the browser’s default settings.” See its Enterprise launch parameters for the documented options and ordering.
Browserless stealth routes also document proxyLocaleMatch for matching browser language with proxy geography. Browserless says the browser otherwise defaults to en-US when this parameter is absent. Locale matching changes a language preference; it does not substitute for an India egress route.

Check saved state and capture readiness
If IP and browser settings look right but the page still shows another region, test with a fresh browser context and inspect cookies, local storage, URL parameters, account state, and any visible region selector. These are diagnostic checks, not confirmed causes for an unspecified target site. If the site remembers a manual region choice, clear or set that state deliberately and keep it consistent across runs.
Also distinguish localization from an incomplete capture. Browserless’s screenshot guidance covers the rendered page, viewport, and image/font readiness options; a capture taken before content has loaded can look incomplete without indicating a location problem. Consult Browserless screenshots and PDFs for capture options such as waiting for images or fonts.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The page shows the wrong country after setting Playwright geolocation | The site may use the public IP rather than browser coordinates. | Inspect egress through the same session; configure an India proxy if IP location is the signal being tested. |
| The page ignores coordinates | The context may lack geolocation permission, settings may be applied too late, or the site may not use browser geolocation. | Set geolocation and permissions: ['geolocation'] on the context before the first navigation, then verify the site’s behavior. |
| India is selected but the region changes between runs | The route may use different proxy nodes, or the site may use other state. | Verify the observed egress on every run; where supported and appropriate, use Browserless’s sticky-session option. Stickiness does not guarantee a specific city. |
| A city selection returns HTTP 401 | Browserless documents city targeting as a Scale-plan feature (500k+ units), with lower plans receiving 401 for this feature. | Check current plan eligibility and city availability, or use country-level routing if that is sufficient. |
| The browser sends an unexpected language or time | Locale or timezone was not set, was set after navigation, or differs from the intended profile. | Set locale and timezoneId at context creation. Treat these as browser signals, not IP routing. |
| The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or missing images | The page may not have finished rendering or image/font loading before capture. | Use appropriate readiness waits and review Browserless’s screenshot guidance; do not treat this alone as evidence that localization failed. |

If you need a screenshot rather than a Browserless-specific debugging exercise, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. A request can look like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://example.in
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the response indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
