Short answer: Browserless is a capable managed-browser platform when your scraper or automation needs JavaScript execution, persistent sessions, Puppeteer or Playwright compatibility, or infrastructure you do not want to operate yourself. It is not one single scraping API: REST endpoints handle stateless, one-action jobs, while BaaS (Browsers as a Service) and BrowserQL/BAP handle stateful or more advanced browser workflows. That distinction determines whether Browserless is a good fit.
For static pages, ordinary HTTP requests are usually simpler. For JavaScript-heavy sites and multi-step flows, Browserless can remove substantial browser-operations work, but success against bot-protected sites is not guaranteed and costs depend on browser time, reconnects, proxy traffic, CAPTCHA solves, and session cleanup.
What Browserless actually provides
Browserless is hosted browser infrastructure rather than a single-purpose scraper. Its cloud service exposes managed headless Chrome through several interfaces, and it also documents private managed deployments and Docker-based self-hosting. The overview describes Puppeteer and Playwright over WebSocket, REST and GraphQL interfaces, and BrowserQL/BAP for newer browser-automation workflows (official overview).
That architecture gives you three materially different ways to work:

REST APIs for one request and one result
The REST route is designed for bounded actions such as rendered-page extraction, CSS-selector extraction, screenshots, PDFs, crawling, downloads, Lighthouse checks, or a server-side function. Each request performs one action and closes the browser session. Cookies, local storage, and other state are discarded between independent calls, so REST is not suitable for a flow that must click, fill a form, and then scrape a later page (REST API documentation).
BaaS for existing browser code
BaaS lets an existing Puppeteer or Playwright script connect to a remote browser instead of launching Chrome locally. The documented client ecosystem also includes chromedp for Go and Pyppeteer for Python. This is usually the least disruptive route when your team already has selectors, login flows, and browser assertions in code (BaaS documentation).
BrowserQL/BAP for new or advanced workflows
Browserless positions BrowserQL, also called BAP in its product materials, as a browser-automation path with built-in stealth and CAPTCHA-related capabilities. Treat those as capabilities to evaluate against your permitted target sites, not as a promise that every anti-bot system will allow access. The documentation itself warns that advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs can still block requests.
Which interface should you choose?
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Render one URL and return content | REST | Simple, stateless, single-action request |
| Screenshot, PDF, extraction, crawl, or Lighthouse check | REST | Dedicated endpoints for bounded jobs |
| Login, click, fill, paginate, then scrape | BaaS or BrowserQL | Maintains browser state across steps |
| Reuse an existing Puppeteer/Playwright script | BaaS | Change the launch target to a remote browser |
| New automation with stealth or CAPTCHA tooling | BrowserQL/BAP | Vendor’s advanced automation path; test on your targets |
| Deployment control or data-location requirements | Private deployment or Docker self-hosting | More control, but you retain infrastructure responsibility |
Scraping JavaScript-heavy pages
Browserless is most defensible when the target page cannot be reliably collected with a normal HTTP client: content appears after JavaScript runs, links require interaction, or the workflow depends on cookies and a logged-in session. A stateful browser can wait for selectors, execute page scripts, and carry state from one action to the next.

Puppeteer, Playwright, and Selenium compatibility
Puppeteer and Playwright
Browserless documents remote connections for Puppeteer and Playwright. The normal migration pattern is to keep your page logic and replace local browser launch with the Browserless WebSocket endpoint and token supplied for your account. Match the endpoint to the protocol expected by your client, then pin browser and client versions in your own deployment process so upgrades are deliberate.
Other CDP clients
Chromedp (Go) and Pyppeteer (Python) are listed as compatible options. These clients speak Chrome DevTools Protocol, which is the basis of the BaaS v2 route.
Selenium and WebDriver
Selenium/WebDriver is not supported in BaaS v2, because that route uses Chrome DevTools Protocol rather than WebDriver (BaaS documentation). If your automation is tightly coupled to Selenium, plan a migration to a supported CDP client or use a different service that explicitly supports WebDriver. Do not assume that a generic REST endpoint preserves the interactive behavior your Selenium test needs.

REST state is discarded
Independent REST calls do not share cookies or browser state. A login request followed by a second REST request will not, by itself, remain authenticated. Put the complete flow in one stateful browser session or design an explicit, permitted authentication mechanism.
Always close BaaS sessions
Browserless warns that abandoned sessions remain open until timeout and can continue consuming billable time. Close the browser in a finally block even when navigation, selectors, or assertions fail. This is both a reliability practice and a cost-control measure.

Region affects latency
The quickstart recommends choosing the region nearest the sites you access, giving US West as an example and noting European operation. That is a deployment consideration, not a measured performance guarantee; your users, target sites, proxy route, and browser workload determine actual latency.
Bot protection, CAPTCHAs, and acceptable expectations
BrowserQL/BAP and related documentation discuss stealth and CAPTCHA-solving capabilities, but Browserless does not promise universal access to protected websites. The REST documentation specifically cautions that advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs can still block requests. Site terms, robots policies, privacy rules, and applicable law remain your responsibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvaluate a target set you are authorized to access. Record the site, date, region, browser client, selectors, sample size, proxy or stealth settings, and failure reason. A result on one domain does not establish a success rate for another.
Pricing and what drives the bill
Browserless uses usage-based billing. Its pricing page defines one Unit as up to 30 seconds of browser time per browser connection. A longer session consumes another Unit for each additional 30 seconds, and reconnecting counts as a new browser connection (pricing page).
| Billable item | Published quantity | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Browser connection time | Up to 30 seconds per Unit | Longer sessions consume additional Units |
| Residential proxy traffic | 6 Units per MB | Pricing-page usage term |
| Datacenter proxy traffic | 2 Units per MB | Pricing-page usage term |
| Successful CAPTCHA solve | 10 Units | Only successful solves are listed |
| Prototyping plan | $25/month | Price shown when accessed in 2026; verify current terms |
Your effective cost depends on page load time, wait conditions, retries, session duration, reconnect frequency, proxy bytes, CAPTCHA use, and whether failed code leaves sessions open. Do not convert these terms into a per-page estimate without a defined workload and observed usage. Before purchase, check the live plan’s included Units, concurrency, overage behavior, proxy terms, and enterprise conditions.

Self-hosting versus Browserless Cloud
Cloud hosting removes browser fleet operations from your team and offers a quick path to remote Puppeteer, Playwright, REST, or BrowserQL use. Private managed deployments and Docker self-hosting provide more control over deployment and data handling, but self-hosting does not eliminate browser maintenance: you still own capacity planning, Chrome updates, observability, networking, isolation, and failure recovery. Choose self-hosting for a concrete control requirement, not merely because the browser itself is open source.

How to evaluate Browserless fairly
- Define the workflow. Separate one-shot rendering from login, interaction, pagination, and download flows.
- Choose the protocol. Map REST, BaaS, BrowserQL, or self-hosting to the workflow before writing code.
- Use permitted targets. Include representative JavaScript, authentication, pagination, and protection cases.
- Measure reproducibly. Log date, plan, region, browser client, selectors, sample count, proxy and stealth settings, completion rate, latency, and Units consumed.
- Test failure handling. Confirm timeouts, browser cleanup, retries, partial results, and alerting.
- Recheck commercial terms. Pricing and product limits change; use the live pages linked above.
Common problems and fixes
The second REST request is logged out
Cause: REST sessions are stateless. Fix: run the complete interaction in one BaaS or BrowserQL session, or use an explicitly supported authentication method.
Selenium script will not connect
Cause: BaaS v2 does not support WebDriver. Fix: port the workflow to Puppeteer, Playwright, chromedp, or Pyppeteer, or select infrastructure with WebDriver support.
A protected site returns a challenge or block page
Cause: site defenses can reject browser automation even when stealth or CAPTCHA features are enabled. Fix: verify authorization, test BrowserQL/BAP or an appropriate proxy configuration, reduce request pressure, and treat unsuccessful access as a possible final outcome.
Usage is unexpectedly high
Cause: long waits, reconnects, proxy traffic, CAPTCHA solves, retries, or abandoned sessions. Fix: close sessions in finally, set bounded waits, avoid unnecessary reconnects, and inspect Unit consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Browserless a scraper or a browser host?
It is primarily managed browser infrastructure with REST, BaaS, and BrowserQL/BAP interfaces. Scraping is one use case, not the sole product mode.
Can one Browserless REST call perform a complete checkout flow?
No. REST endpoints are single-action and stateless; use a stateful BaaS or BrowserQL session for clicks, form entry, and subsequent extraction.
Does Browserless guarantee CAPTCHA success?
No. Vendor-documented stealth and CAPTCHA capabilities can help, but protected sites may still block requests.
What should I verify before committing to a plan?
Check current Units, concurrency, overage rules, proxy and CAPTCHA charges, supported regions, and whether your client protocol is supported.
The Bottom Line
Browserless is a sensible choice when you need managed, JavaScript-capable browsers or persistent Puppeteer/Playwright automation. Use REST for isolated jobs, BaaS or BrowserQL for stateful flows, and budget from measured browser time rather than page count. It is less compelling for static HTTP scraping, unsupported Selenium/WebDriver workflows, or targets that continue to reject automation.
