Playwright and BrowserCat are not direct substitutes: Playwright is the browser automation framework that takes the screenshots; BrowserCat is a managed cloud-browser service you can connect Playwright to. For a modest batch, run Playwright where you control the browser environment. For larger workloads, BrowserCat may reduce infrastructure work, but test your own pages and calculate cost from actual usage rather than assuming it will be faster or cheaper.
How to take screenshots of many websites with Playwright
Playwright’s Page screenshot API captures the visible viewport or a full scrollable page. It can write an image to a file or return a buffer for processing or storage. See the Playwright Page API for the current options.
Capture a batch with Node.js
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project, then save this as screenshots.js. It creates a new browser context and page for each URL, stores each result under a distinct filename, and limits simultaneous captures to four. Change the URLs, output directory, viewport, and concurrency to suit your workload.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const path = require('node:path');
const urls = [
'https://example.com',
'https://www.iana.org/domains/reserved',
];
const outputDir = path.resolve('screenshots');
const concurrency = 4;
function safeName(url, index) {
const host = new URL(url).hostname.replace(/[^a-z0-9.-]/gi, '_');
return `${String(index + 1).padStart(3, '0')}-${host}.png`;
}
async function main() {
await fs.mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const results = new Array(urls.length);
let next = 0;
async function worker() {
while (true) {
const index = next++;
if (index >= urls.length) return;
const url = urls[index];
const context = await browser.newContext({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 30000 });
if (!response) throw new Error('Navigation returned no main-resource response');
const file = path.join(outputDir, safeName(url, index));
await page.screenshot({ path: file, fullPage: true });
results[index] = { url, status: response.status(), file };
} catch (error) {
results[index] = { url, error: error.message };
} finally {
await context.close();
}
}
}
try {
await Promise.all(Array.from({ length: Math.min(concurrency, urls.length) }, worker));
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
console.log(JSON.stringify(results, null, 2));
}
main().catch(error => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
The script records an outcome per URL, including navigation status when available, rather than letting one failed page stop the whole batch. For production use, add retry rules for transient failures, persist results to a job record or log, and ensure filenames cannot collide when different URLs map to the same host.

Choose the capture and waiting behavior deliberately
- Viewport or full page: omit
fullPage: truefor a viewport image. Full-page capture can take longer and produce a much taller file; pages with lazy-loaded content may need a deliberate scroll-and-wait strategy before capture. - Navigation readiness:
waitUntil: 'load'waits for the page load event, but it does not guarantee that every client-rendered widget or late image has settled. Wait for a known selector or a site-specific condition when the screenshot depends on it. Use bounded timeouts to prevent one page from occupying a worker indefinitely. - Visual consistency: keep viewport, browser build, operating system, device scale, color scheme, and other capture settings consistent when comparing screenshots. Playwright notes that rendering may vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode; see its visual comparisons guidance.
- Authentication and state: use isolated browser contexts for independent sessions. If a page needs authentication, provide the required state explicitly and handle credentials securely rather than sharing mutable session state across workers.
How to scale a Playwright screenshot batch
For bulk work, the important design choice is not simply the maximum number of simultaneous pages. It is how to keep jobs independent, failures recoverable, and the destination sites and your own infrastructure within safe limits.
Bound concurrency and isolate work
Start with a conservative worker limit and increase it while monitoring completion rate, latency, memory and CPU use, browser time, and errors. Full-page captures and complex pages can consume substantially more resources than simple viewport captures. Do not treat a service’s advertised maximum concurrency as proof that your workload can sustain that rate.

Give each job its own output path and state. Avoid shared files or mutable records that multiple workers can overwrite. Partition the URL list into independent jobs, record success or failure per URL, and retry only transient failures with a limited retry count and backoff. Respect the policies and rate limits of the sites you capture.
Use Playwright Test when the batch is test work
If screenshots are part of an automated test suite, Playwright Test supports worker processes and configurable parallelism, and eligible work can be distributed across machines using sharding. Its workers do not share state, so tests and output handling must be designed to avoid data and file collisions. See Playwright parallelism and sharding.

For a plain URL-capture queue, a small custom worker pool may be simpler than turning every URL into a test. Use Playwright Test when its test orchestration, reporting, and sharding fit the job.
Should you run Playwright yourself or connect it to BrowserCat?
BrowserCat provides managed cloud browsers and documents connecting Playwright to its service. In this setup, Playwright still defines the navigation and screenshot operations; BrowserCat supplies the browser execution environment. Its quick start and Playwright integration guide show how to connect. BrowserCat describes a single endpoint and backend routing on its homepage; those are vendor descriptions, not independent performance measurements.

No independent head-to-head benchmark establishes that BrowserCat is faster than self-hosted Playwright for bulk screenshots. Evaluate it as an execution option, not as a different screenshot API, and compare it with the same capture logic.
How to evaluate a managed browser service
- Select representative pages, including long pages, dynamic content, authentication cases, and the viewport sizes you actually need.
- Run the same Playwright capture logic in both environments, keeping browser settings and page conditions as consistent as possible.
- Record completion rate, latency distribution, total browser time, output consistency, and total cost—not only the fastest successful capture.
- Check the region, browser configuration, concurrency limits, and account-specific restrictions you need before migrating the full batch.
How BrowserCat pricing applies to screenshot workloads
BrowserCat’s pricing page currently describes credit-based plans and different charging rules for successful Utility API requests and WebSocket session time. It lists a Hobby plan with 1,000 monthly credits and states 1,000 concurrent requests on its displayed tiers. The page says successful Utility API requests cost one credit each and WebSocket sessions are charged in 30-second increments. These are time-sensitive vendor-listed terms; check BrowserCat pricing for current plan, overage, and account-limit rules.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A credit allowance is not automatically a screenshot allowance. The credit cost depends on how your workflow connects and how long browser sessions remain open. Measure a representative batch, then estimate from the actual session pattern and current pricing rather than converting credits directly into image counts.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshot files rather than a browser automation environment, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options and details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting bulk captures
- Navigation times out: the page may be slow, unresponsive, or waiting on resources indefinitely. Set a bounded timeout, capture the failure in the per-URL result, and retry only when appropriate. If the page’s load event is not the right readiness condition, wait for a specific selector or application state.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: confirm that navigation succeeded and that the page was ready before capturing. For lazy-loaded images, scroll the page in a controlled way and wait for the content to appear before requesting a full-page screenshot.
- Images differ between runs: standardize operating system, browser version, headless mode, viewport, scale, and other settings. Avoid comparing captures made under different rendering environments as if the differences necessarily came from the site.
- Parallel jobs overwrite outputs or interfere: use unique paths and isolated contexts, and ensure each worker owns its result record. In Playwright Test, remember that worker processes do not share state.
- Throughput falls as workers increase: reduce concurrency and inspect resource use, capture duration, and failure rate. More workers can increase contention; neither a configured worker count nor a provider’s maximum concurrency guarantees sustainable full-page capture throughput.
- Costs are higher than expected on BrowserCat: identify whether the workflow uses successful Utility API requests or WebSocket sessions, measure session duration, and recalculate against the current credit rules and plan limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
