What “Browser Tools MCP” means here
“Browser Tools MCP” is often used loosely. In this comparison it means Google Chrome’s official chrome-devtools-mcp server, documented as Chrome DevTools for agents. It connects an MCP-compatible coding agent to a live Chrome browser and exposes DevTools-style inspection and control.
The server is useful when the browser itself is the thing you need to examine: JavaScript console output, failed network requests, rendering problems, accessibility or performance issues, screenshots, and recorded performance traces. It can launch a separate Chrome profile or connect to an existing instance.
What Playwright MCP is built for
Playwright MCP is Microsoft Playwright’s official MCP server. Instead of asking an agent to infer coordinates from a screenshot, it returns an accessibility snapshot containing roles, names, text, and stable references. The agent can then navigate, click, type, fill forms, wait for conditions, take screenshots, and evaluate pages through structured calls.

Playwright’s documented browser support includes Chromium/Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge. Its core tools are available by default; optional capability groups add network inspection and mocking, storage, testing assertions, vision, PDF, DevTools, and configuration introspection.
Which server should you choose?
Debug a live or production-like page
Use Chrome DevTools MCP when the question is “What is this page doing right now?” Console messages, request/response failures, timing information, and performance traces are first-class parts of the workflow. It is also the more natural choice when you need to inspect a page while an engineer watches Chrome.
Reuse an already logged-in Chrome session
Chrome DevTools MCP is the direct option because it can attach to an existing Chrome instance. That session may contain active accounts, cookies, tokens, and private page content, so use a dedicated browser profile and give access only to a trusted agent.
Automate forms and navigation reliably
Use Playwright MCP. Accessibility snapshots let the agent target a button by its role and accessible name rather than guessing screen coordinates. This makes multi-step form filling and navigation easier to repeat after minor layout changes.

Add test assertions, storage state, or network mocking
Choose Playwright MCP and enable the relevant optional capability groups. This is the better fit for test-oriented workflows that need assertions, saved authentication state, intercepted requests, or controlled responses.
Keep a simple browsing tool surface
Both projects offer reduced configurations. Chrome documents a --slim mode for basic browser tasks. Playwright exposes core tools by default and lets you opt into additional capability groups instead of enabling everything.
Install and configure Chrome DevTools MCP
Prerequisites
- Node.js and npm, because the standard server is started with
npx. - A current Chrome installation.
- An MCP-compatible client such as a coding agent that can launch an MCP server.
Standard MCP entry
Add an MCP server entry whose command is:
npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest
The exact JSON wrapper differs by client, but the command and package name are the same. Review the package version before production use instead of blindly allowing a moving @latest dependency.

Chrome DevTools MCP can run headless or headed. It can start a new Chrome profile, connect automatically to an existing browser when supported, or connect manually through a remote-debugging URL such as http://127.0.0.1:9222.
A separate profile is the safest default. If you attach to a profile used for personal browsing, the agent may be able to read authenticated pages and browser data. A remote-debugging endpoint is a control interface; do not leave it reachable by untrusted machines while sensitive browsing is open.

Install and configure Playwright MCP
Prerequisites
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An MCP client capable of starting an npm package.
- Browser engines installed and available to the Playwright environment you configure.
Standard MCP entry
Use this server command in the client’s MCP configuration:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest
Choose the browser and optional capability groups through the command’s documented options, environment variables, or a configuration file. Keep the default core tools when you only need navigation and interaction; add network, storage, testing, vision, PDF, DevTools, or introspection capabilities only when the workflow needs them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow an agent interacts
- The server returns an accessibility snapshot of the current page.
- The agent identifies a role, name, text label, or other semantic target and receives a stable reference such as
e5. - The agent calls structured actions such as navigation, clicking, typing, form filling, waiting, or screenshot capture.
- The agent repeats the snapshot/action cycle after navigation or a state change.
Playwright also supports evaluation, but evaluation can execute arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process. Treat that capability as equivalent to privileged code execution and expose it only to trusted clients.
Chrome DevTools MCP and Playwright MCP side by side
Inspection model
Chrome DevTools MCP is organized around DevTools categories and page IDs. It is strong at reading console and network activity, examining a live page, and recording performance data. Playwright MCP is organized around semantic page state and action references, which favors deterministic interaction.
Session and state handling
Chrome can work with a newly launched profile or an existing browser session. Existing-session attachment is convenient for authenticated debugging but carries the greatest data-exposure risk. Playwright uses persistent browser contexts and storage options configured for the MCP process, giving you a deliberate way to provide or withhold saved state.

Testing and automation
Playwright is the practical default for repeatable test flows, cross-browser checks, assertions, storage state, and request mocking. Chrome DevTools MCP is the better companion when a test fails and you need to understand the browser’s runtime behavior rather than only the pass/fail result.
Security controls you should apply
- Isolate profiles: use a disposable Chrome profile for DevTools attachment and a dedicated Playwright context for automation.
- Limit client trust: only trusted MCP clients should receive browser control or Playwright evaluation.
- Protect remote debugging: bind debugging endpoints locally or behind access controls; never expose them casually to a network.
- Separate credentials: use test accounts and narrowly scoped tokens instead of personal or production credentials.
- Pin and review versions: both examples use
@latest, so package behavior, browser support, and flags can change. Record a tested version for CI and review upgrades deliberately. - Watch page content: untrusted page text can influence an agent. Do not let arbitrary content steer privileged tools or evaluation.
Performance and operational guidance
When Chrome DevTools MCP is faster to diagnose
If the symptom is a slow page, console exception, blocked request, layout problem, or unexpected runtime behavior, DevTools data avoids building a separate automation script just to observe the failure. A live headed session is especially useful while reproducing an issue manually.
When Playwright is easier to operate repeatedly
For a workflow that must run over and over, semantic references and explicit browser contexts reduce dependence on screen coordinates. Select only the capability groups you need to keep the tool surface and agent decisions manageable.
Reliability boundaries
Neither server eliminates normal web automation failure modes. Pages can redirect, require authentication, change labels, load content asynchronously, or block automated traffic. Add explicit waits and state checks in Playwright workflows, and use Chrome’s console and network inspection to identify the real cause when a live page behaves unexpectedly.

The MCP client cannot start the server
- Confirm Node.js and npm are installed and visible to the client process.
- Run the exact
npxcommand in a terminal to reveal package or permission errors. - Pin a known package version if a recent
@latestupdate changed flags or dependencies.
Chrome DevTools MCP cannot see the browser
- Start Chrome in the mode expected by the server, or provide the correct remote-debugging URL.
- Check that the debugging endpoint is reachable from the MCP process and is not occupied by another instance.
- Use a fresh profile when an existing profile has locked files or incompatible state.
The agent sees no authenticated data
Verify that the server is connected to the intended profile or context. A newly launched profile will not contain cookies from your normal browser. For sensitive work, copy only the minimum test state into an isolated profile rather than attaching your everyday account.

Playwright actions target the wrong element
Request a fresh accessibility snapshot after navigation, modal dialogs, or dynamic updates. Prefer the element’s role and accessible name over a stale reference, and add a wait for the state that makes the control available.
Evaluation is blocked or unsafe
Evaluation is a privileged capability. Enable it only for a trusted MCP client, remove it when it is not required, and avoid sending untrusted page instructions into a workflow that can execute JavaScript.
For screenshots without running a browser MCP server
ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first when the deliverable is a clean website screenshot or PDF rather than an interactive debugging session. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; and its MCP server gives AI agents take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests; r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90); open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo has 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Every plan includes the same feature set, including full-page and element captures, device and retina settings, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, cookies and headers, geolocation, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and a usage API.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use both MCP servers in one project?
Yes. A practical split is Playwright MCP for the repeatable navigation or test flow and Chrome DevTools MCP for investigating the live browser state when that flow fails. Keep their profiles, credentials, and permissions separate.
Which server is better for an agent that must explain a failure?
Use Chrome DevTools MCP when the explanation depends on console errors, network requests, or performance traces. Use Playwright MCP when the important evidence is whether a semantic interaction or assertion succeeded.
What should I review before upgrading either server?
Check the package release notes, MCP client compatibility, browser-version support, and any changed flags or capability defaults. Re-run a small authenticated and cross-browser smoke workflow before promoting the new version.
