Browser session replay helps developers investigate hard-to-reproduce web bugs by reconstructing a user’s interaction with an application and, where supported, showing related technical signals such as errors, logs, network activity, or application state. It is usually not a literal video of the user’s screen: many systems rebuild the page from browser events and DOM data, so the result can differ from what the user actually saw.
Replay is most useful when a team captures enough context to follow the steps before a failure, while deliberately masking sensitive information and controlling access to recordings. It can narrow an investigation; it cannot guarantee a bug will reproduce or explain itself.
What browser session recording and replay means
A session replay is a video-like reconstruction of activity in a web application. Depending on the product and configuration, it may show page navigation, clicks, scrolling, and interface changes, then place those events alongside debugging signals. Teams use it to understand the sequence of actions that led to a reported problem when they cannot easily reproduce the issue from a short bug report alone.
“Recording” can be misleading if it suggests a camera-like capture of screen pixels. Sentry’s Session Replay FAQ (Web), published August 11, 2026, describes its replay as a DOM recording rather than a screen recording. In practice, a replay system may collect browser-side events and reconstruct a page from them. That reconstruction may not be pixel-perfect and can differ from the page as the person experienced it. LogRocket likewise describes its replay as a reproduction assembled from events recorded by its SDK.

This distinction matters when investigating visual bugs: replay can preserve useful interaction history without necessarily preserving every pixel, animation frame, or rendering detail. Treat it as evidence about the session, not an exact video of the user’s display.
How replay helps debug a web application
The value is the context around an incident. A replay can answer questions a stack trace alone may not: which page the person was on, what they clicked immediately before an error, whether they scrolled or navigated, and what the interface appeared to do afterward. The surrounding technical context can help connect that sequence to a failure.
- Interaction sequence: See navigation, clicks, scrolling, and recorded interface changes leading up to a report.
- Error context: Sentry describes replay in conjunction with errors, traces, web vitals, console output, logs, and network calls.
- Application and request signals: LogRocket documents console and network logging as well as Redux state tracking.
- Incident triage: A team can use the timeline to form a more focused reproduction attempt or identify which logs and requests to inspect.
These are product-described capabilities, not a promise that every event is captured or that the replay will contain the cause. A failure may not recur, relevant data may not have been recorded, or a reconstructed page may omit the rendering detail needed to explain a visual discrepancy.
What to compare when choosing a replay approach
There is no universally best session-replay product established by the available documentation. Compare the approach against your debugging workflow, privacy requirements, and operating capacity rather than treating a feature list as a ranking.

| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Debugging context | Can your team correlate a replay with the errors, logs, network activity, traces, or application state relevant to its incidents? | A replay is more actionable when the interaction timeline can be examined beside the technical evidence the team already uses. |
| Privacy controls | What is masked or sanitized in the browser before collection? Can sensitive elements or state values be excluded? Is server-side filtering available? | Controls differ, and the product’s defaults do not establish that a particular application is configured safely. |
| Hosting and operations | Would a hosted service or a self-hosted stack suit the team? Who will configure, maintain, secure, and update it? | OpenReplay describes an open-source, self-hosted session-replay stack; choosing that model means the team needs to account for operating the stack as well as integrating capture. |
Vendor documentation illustrates different capabilities, not independent comparative tests or proof of feature parity across products, plans, SDKs, and platforms.
Examples of documented replay approaches
Sentry
Sentry documents replay as part of debugging with associated signals that can include web vitals, console output, logs, network calls, errors, and traces. Its web FAQ characterizes replay as a DOM reconstruction, cautions that it is not pixel-perfect, and describes default masking of text and images along with additional server-side scrubbing and replay deletion. These are Sentry-described behaviors; verify the settings and behavior for the SDK and project you deploy.
LogRocket
LogRocket describes session replay as a reproduction assembled from SDK-recorded events. Its documentation covers console and network logging, Redux state tracking, and privacy controls for sanitizing text, inputs, images, and frontend state values. Confirm which controls apply to your application and how they are configured rather than assuming every field is protected automatically.
OpenReplay
OpenReplay describes an open-source, self-hosted replay stack. Its documentation also lists capture and rendering issues such as unsupported browsers, duplicate tracker initialization, blocked scripts, inaccessible styles or images, and canvas limitations. These are OpenReplay-specific troubleshooting notes, not universal failure modes for every replay tool.

PostHog
PostHog’s documentation explains replay in terms of SDK capture, recording rules, browser panels, and masking before data leaves the device. The captured content therefore depends on the SDK and the rules configured for the application.
Plan privacy before enabling capture
Session replay collects interaction data, so treat its configuration as a data-handling decision, not merely a debugging toggle. Product defaults and controls are useful, but they are not proof that a particular application, data flow, or use case is safe by default.
- Choose what the debugging team needs. Identify the pages, interactions, and signals that can help investigate incidents. Avoid collecting extra fields or state merely because a tool can capture them.
- Mask and exclude sensitive content. Configure the product’s available text, input, image, element, or application-state controls for the actual UI. Where state redaction is available, identify sensitive values explicitly.
- Review what is captured. In a controlled review, inspect representative recordings and confirm that the masking and exclusion rules work on real application states, including error and logged-in states.
- Limit access and set retention deliberately. Decide which roles may view recordings and how long recordings should remain available, in line with your organization’s requirements.
- Recheck after application changes. Forms, components, state shape, and replay SDK configuration can change. Review the capture boundary when those changes affect what a recording might expose.
Sentry says its default web privacy configuration masks all text and images and describes server-side scrubbing and replay deletion. LogRocket documents configurable sanitization for text, inputs, images, and frontend state. PostHog describes masking before data leaves the device. These vendor-described controls should be verified in your own configuration; do not infer that another product has identical defaults.
Consent, notice, retention, and other legal obligations depend on jurisdiction, collected data, configuration, and use. The product documentation described here does not establish a universal legal rule. Have qualified privacy counsel assess the implementation for the places and purposes in which it will be used.

Implement replay as a controlled debugging workflow
Because SDK setup and configuration differ by product, use the selected vendor’s current integration instructions rather than copying initialization code from another platform. A sound rollout is to first enable capture in a controlled environment, verify that recordings render and that masking works, and then enable the intended production scope with access and retention controls in place.
- Define the incident use case. Specify which team will use replay and what kinds of browser issues it should help investigate.
- Integrate the chosen SDK or stack. Follow its installation and initialization instructions for your framework and deployment. Avoid starting a tracker twice; duplicate initialization is one documented OpenReplay issue.
- Set capture and privacy rules. Configure recording rules, browser panels, masking, exclusions, and any state sanitization available in the chosen product.
- Validate representative sessions. Confirm that expected interactions render and that sensitive text, inputs, images, and state are handled as intended.
- Connect replay to incident practice. Give investigators a repeatable path to inspect the interaction timeline alongside available logs, errors, network events, traces, or state.
For a static point-in-time visual reference rather than an interaction replay, a website screenshot API can capture a page state. ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot tool, not a session-replay system; a screenshot does not show how a user arrived at that state or provide an interaction timeline.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off static capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in a single GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its API does not replace session replay, but it can provide a page snapshot without you setting up a browser automation stack. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, then sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

No recording appears
- Check that capture is enabled and that the applicable recording rule includes the session. PostHog’s documentation notes that replay content depends on SDK capture and recording rules.
- Confirm the tracker initialized successfully and only once. OpenReplay identifies duplicate tracker startup as a possible issue in its own stack.
- Check whether the browser is supported and whether an extension blocks the recording script. Both are among the issues covered in OpenReplay’s troubleshooting documentation.
The replay is incomplete or visually different
- Remember that a DOM-based reconstruction is not necessarily pixel capture; Sentry explicitly cautions that its replay may not be pixel-perfect.
- Check whether stylesheets or image resources are accessible to the replay renderer. OpenReplay documents inaccessible styles or images as possible rendering problems.
- Inspect canvas or WebGL areas separately when visual output is missing or unlike the original. OpenReplay notes canvas limitations; behavior can differ by product and implementation.
- Review masking and browser-panel or recording settings when expected content is absent. Privacy rules can intentionally remove text, images, inputs, or state.
A replay does not explain the bug
- Use the sequence to form a specific reproduction attempt, then inspect the correlated errors, logs, network activity, traces, or state available in your chosen tool.
- Check whether the failure depended on data, timing, browser conditions, or a request that was not captured. Replay is evidence for investigation, not a guarantee of reproduction or diagnosis.
- If the problem is exclusively a pixel-level rendering difference, supplement replay with appropriate visual evidence; a reconstructed DOM may not preserve the exact screen image.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The available product documentation does not establish a comparable performance-overhead benchmark, reliability ranking, or total-cost comparison for Sentry, LogRocket, OpenReplay, and PostHog. Do not assume that capture has no performance impact or that the same settings have equivalent operational cost across products. Validate the selected SDK and capture configuration in your own application, paying attention to the data you collect and the infrastructure or hosted-service model you choose.

Hosted services and a self-hosted stack also place operational responsibilities in different places. OpenReplay’s self-hosted positioning means the team should consider setup and ongoing operation; the cited material does not establish a universal cost advantage over hosted options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is session replay the same as recording a user’s screen?
Not necessarily. Sentry describes its web replay as a DOM reconstruction rather than a pixel-based screen recording; other products describe event-based reproduction. Check the chosen product’s capture model.
Can session replay guarantee that I will find the cause of a bug?
No. It can put interactions beside useful technical signals, but capture gaps, rendering differences, or an intermittent failure can leave the cause unresolved.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a screenshot API replace browser session replay?
No. A screenshot gives a static page image, while replay reconstructs an interaction sequence. ScreenshotNeo is an option for a point-in-time capture, not a replay timeline.
