Start with your browser’s built-in reading and tab-organization features, then add an extension only if a specific distraction remains. To keep the setup local-first, check where extension settings are stored, whether sync is enabled, what survives a restart or removal, and what the extension’s privacy notice says. “Local storage” alone does not establish that no data is collected.
Start with the browser features that match your task
Use a feature to address a particular source of distraction rather than installing several tools at once. Firefox’s official feature page describes Reader Mode, task-based Tab Groups, pinned tabs, and picture-in-picture as ways to reduce clutter or organize browsing. These are descriptions of Firefox’s features, not independent evidence that they improve focus for every user.
- Reader Mode: Use it when a page’s ads, pop-ups, or layout make an article difficult to read. Firefox describes Reader Mode as removing that clutter; its feature page says, “Reader Mode turns busy pages into clean, readable content in a single click.” Firefox’s feature page provides the product details.
- Tab Groups: Group tabs by task, project, or topic so unrelated work is easier to separate.
- Pinned tabs: Keep a frequently used site readily available without treating it as part of every task.
- Picture-in-picture: Keep a video visible while working elsewhere, if that supports the task rather than competing with it.
Feature names and availability can change by browser version. Check the controls in your installed browser before building a workflow around them.

Add an extension only for a remaining distraction
If a particular site or behavior still interrupts you after using native controls, consider a blocker or focus extension for that need. Before installing it, inspect its requested permissions and privacy notice. The sources here document browser features and Chrome’s extension storage behavior; they do not establish the quality, compatibility, or privacy practices of any particular focus extension.

- Identify the concrete problem the extension should solve.

- Look for a clear explanation of where settings are stored and whether they sync.
Understand what “local-first” storage means
For Chrome extensions, the storage choices have different persistence and synchronization behavior. Chrome’s storage API documentation describes these distinctions:
storage.local: Data remains local to the extension and is cleared when the extension is removed.storage.session: Data is cleared when the browser restarts.storage.sync: Data synchronizes when the user enables syncing. Chrome documents approximate limits of 100 KB total and 8 KB per item for this storage area.
Those limits and behaviors describe Chrome’s API; do not assume other browsers use the same quotas or semantics. Also distinguish “stored locally” from “never leaves the device”: storage location alone does not answer what an extension transmits, processes, or collects.

Check storage against the extension’s execution context
If you are evaluating or developing a Chrome extension, its execution context affects which storage mechanisms are available. Chrome states that extension service workers can use IndexedDB and Cache Storage, but cannot use Local Storage or Session Storage. See Chrome’s storage and cookies documentation. This is implementation guidance for Chrome extensions, not a claim about every browser or every extension.

A browser’s own privacy notice illustrates why “on-device” and “no data use” are not interchangeable. Mozilla’s Firefox Focus and Firefox Klar Privacy Notice, effective April 22, 2025, says specified data may be processed on-device for core browser functionality and that browsing data is cleared from the device when the browser is closed. It also describes data uses related to search, security, and product improvement. The notice applies to Focus and Klar; it should not be generalized to other browsers or extensions, and it may change.

For any tool you consider, use its own current notice to understand both on-device processing and any other described data uses. A local storage API can tell you where a setting is kept; it cannot by itself establish the full data-handling picture.
A practical setup sequence
- Choose one job to improve. Decide whether you need less reading clutter, task-based tab organization, quick access to a site, or a video kept visible.
- Try the matching native feature. Start with the browser’s reader view, tab groups, pinned tabs, or picture-in-picture where available.
- Notice what remains distracting. Add an extension only if a specific need remains after the native setup.
- Review permissions and the privacy notice. Confirm that the access requested fits the extension’s purpose and understand what data its maker says it handles.
- Verify persistence and sync. Check where settings are stored, whether sync is enabled, what lasts through a browser restart, and what happens when the extension is removed. For Chrome, use the documented behavior of
storage.local,storage.session, andstorage.syncas a starting point.
What you can—and cannot—conclude
Firefox’s feature page documents the organization and reading tools Firefox describes, while Chrome’s developer documentation specifies Chrome extension storage behavior. Mozilla’s Focus/Klar notice explains the data practices described for those products. Together, these sources help you assess features and data handling; they do not establish a universally best browser, prove a focus benefit, or verify a specific extension’s trustworthiness.
