Check the browser and version, operating system, device and viewport, required web features, core interactions, and accessibility support that matter to your actual users. Build a risk-based test matrix from audience evidence rather than trying to test every possible combination. Compatibility references can guide that plan, but they cannot replace testing your site on relevant devices and with assistive technology.

Which browser differences can break a site?

Cross-browser testing is not a search for pixel-identical pages in every environment. It is a check that people can use the site’s essential content and workflows across the browsers, devices, and assistive technologies you support. As MDN explains in its introduction to cross-browser testing, the same experience need not be delivered everywhere if core functionality remains accessible in some way.

Feature support

Check the CSS properties, HTML behavior, JavaScript syntax, and web APIs that your product actually depends on. Verify them against the oldest browser version in your support range as well as current target versions. A feature can be supported in one browser family but behave differently across versions or operating systems.

Use MDN browser compatibility data and Baseline to identify potential gaps. These references help with planning; they do not establish that your implementation works in every target environment.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Rendering and responsive layout

Review text wrapping, spacing, sizing, controls, and layout at representative phone, tablet, and desktop viewports. Look for clipped content, unexpected overflow, controls that become hard to use, and layout changes that hide important information. A viewport-size check is useful, but it does not reproduce every constraint of a physical device.

Interactions and workflows

Exercise the real tasks visitors need to complete, such as navigating, submitting forms, and using the site’s defining features. Include JavaScript-dependent behavior and verify what happens when an interaction succeeds, fails, or receives unusual input. The right cases depend on the feature and user flow; there is no universal exhaustive interaction checklist.

Keyboard, screen readers, and other assistive technology

Navigate with a keyboard and test with screen readers or other assistive technology relevant to your audience. Confirm that controls can be reached and operated, and that important content and state changes are conveyed in a usable way. A browser compatibility result alone cannot prove accessibility for a person using assistive technology.

W3C’s Understanding Conformance, updated 20 September 2026, says that W3C does not specify which or how many assistive technologies must support a technology for it to count as accessibility-supported. Choose combinations based on users and the assistive technologies your site needs to support rather than treating one fixed list as definitive.

Operating systems and device environments

Include the operating systems, form factors, and browser versions your users actually have. Native browser behavior, device constraints, and platform differences can matter even when the browser names match. Physical devices are useful when practical; emulators and virtual machines can extend coverage when maintaining a device lab is not feasible.

How to choose a practical test matrix

Start with site analytics or other evidence about your audience, including geography and device use. Add the browsers and versions required by product or support commitments, then prioritize combinations where a failure would affect important users or workflows. There is no realistic need to cover every browser-device combination.

MDN’s testing-strategy guidance describes using expected users to guide coverage. Its examples, such as current Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge for a North American audience plus relevant mobile browsers, are examples of a method—not a timeless browser list. Revisit your matrix as audience data and support requirements change.

Matrix dimension What to record
Browser Browser name and version, including the oldest supported version where relevant.
Operating system The target platform; do not assume a browser behaves identically across operating systems.
Device and viewport Phone, tablet, or desktop form factor and representative viewport dimensions.
Feature availability Required CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and web API behavior for the site’s implementation.
Workflow High-priority navigation, forms, and product-specific interactions to exercise.
Accessibility Keyboard use and relevant screen-reader or other assistive-technology combinations.
Test environment Physical device, emulator, virtual machine, or cloud environment.

MDN Baseline is useful for understanding support across its defined set of mainstream browsers. It does not cover every quality dimension: MDN explicitly distinguishes compatibility status from accessibility, usability, performance, security, older devices, web views, and assistive-technology testing. Treat a favorable compatibility status as one input, not a release sign-off.

A repeatable cross-browser testing workflow

  1. Agree on the support range. Document target users, geography, required browsers and versions, operating systems, and device types.
  2. Identify high-risk features and flows. List the technologies and user journeys whose failure would block important tasks. Check feature references for potential support gaps.
  3. Test changes early. Check each change in a couple of stable browsers, include keyboard and screen-reader checks, and bring a mobile platform into the process early rather than leaving it to the end.
  4. Expand to the agreed matrix. Use physical devices where practical, and emulators or virtual machines for additional environments. Choose coverage according to risk, not an arbitrary browser count.
  5. Automate repetition when it helps. For larger projects, automate repeatable interactions and capture screenshots to flag layout differences. MDN names Selenium as an automation option and BrowserStack and Sauce Labs as commercial examples in its testing overview. Automation and screenshots can make repeated checks more efficient, but do not replace accessibility or relevant device testing.
  6. Record and narrow discrepancies. Note the browser, version, platform, device or viewport, and steps to reproduce. Compare affected and unaffected environments to isolate whether the cause is a feature gap, rendering difference, platform behavior, or interaction issue.

Capture screenshots to spot visual differences

Screenshot comparison can help detect visual changes across selected environments, especially when repeated checks are part of an automated workflow. Use it to identify where to investigate; a matching image does not prove that controls work or that assistive technology can use the page.

For API-based capture, ScreenshotNeo is one option: it can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a GET request, and its API accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request can capture a page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a site have to look exactly the same in every browser?

No. The important standard is that core content and functionality remain accessible and usable in the environments you support; exact visual identity is not always necessary.

How many browser and assistive-technology combinations should I test?

There is no universal required number. Choose combinations from your audience, support commitments, risk, and relevant assistive-technology use.
