Yes—browser-based apps can cover much of a web designer’s work, especially interface design, interactive prototyping, collaboration, and feedback. They are not automatically a fit for every project: reliable internet, browser and graphics support, local-font access, file complexity, and the distinction between a prototype and a deployed website all matter.
What browser-based design apps handle well
For interface work, a browser app can make it straightforward to share a file, collaborate, gather comments, and present an interactive prototype without asking everyone to install the same desktop software. A UK Competition and Markets Authority report published in 2023 described collaboration, plugins, vector editing, and ease of use among the attractions users saw in Figma. Those observations are historical context, not a current ranking of design tools or their plans. Read the CMA report.
That makes browser-based work a reasonable choice when the deliverable is primarily a design file, a prototype, or a shared review process. It does not mean every browser app offers the same capabilities: the operational details below are specific to Figma.

Internet access and offline work
Figma says it needs a reliable, stable internet connection for full functionality. Some activity is possible offline, but Figma does not offer a dedicated offline mode. Its guidance warns that clearing browser cache or data may erase offline changes that have not synced. If a project must continue through outages or while traveling, test the exact workflow in advance and understand how unsaved changes are handled. Figma’s offline guidance.

Browser, graphics, and fonts
Figma lists Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox as supported browsers, requires WebGL, recommends an up-to-date browser and 100% browser zoom, and directs users to its Font Helper when they need fonts installed on their computer. These are Figma-specific requirements; check the documentation for any other app rather than assuming its browser support is identical. Figma browser configuration.
Large files and performance
Unreliable connections can slow loading, lower image resolution, or cause lag when panning and zooming in Figma. The company’s troubleshooting guidance recommends closing unused tabs and splitting files to reduce memory use. It gives an approximate active-memory limit of 2 GB per browser tab, which varies by device; a file that reaches the limit may be locked. Treat this as Figma’s troubleshooting estimate, not a universal browser benchmark. Figma’s troubleshooting checklist.

A design file is not the same as a production website
Figma Make extends browser-based work to functional prototypes, web apps, and interactive UI. But making or publishing an app through a design tool is not evidence that a production site has been validated and maintained in its actual hosting and deployment environment. Keep the deliverable clear: a design file, interactive prototype, and live website are different outcomes.

Make’s availability, sharing, and publishing features depend on plan and seat. Figma’s July 2025 announcement said Make and listed AI features had moved from beta to general availability, while publishing remained in beta at that time. Product status may change, so consult the current Figma Make FAQ before relying on a particular feature or making a plan decision.

How to decide whether a browser app is enough
Judge the workflow by what you need to do, rather than by whether software is labeled “browser-based” or “desktop.” Use these checks before committing a project:
- Connectivity: Can you work through travel or outages, and do you know how edits are saved and recovered?
- Collaboration and handoff: Do you need simultaneous editing, comments, shareable prototypes, or developer handoff?
- Deliverable: Are you producing a design file, interactive prototype, or deployed website? Identify any validation and maintenance beyond the design tool.
- Project scale: Test representative files on the actual computer and connection. Watch for slow loading, memory limits, and canvas lag.
- Fonts and browser setup: Confirm the required browser, graphics support, zoom setting, and local-font workflow on the work machine.
- Access rules: Verify that the current plan and seat include the collaboration, export, or publishing features the project needs.
Desktop software may be a better fit when offline continuity, a particular local workflow, or performance on large files outweighs browser sharing and collaboration. That is a workflow trade-off, not a rule that all desktop tools outperform all browser apps.

What historical comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The CMA’s 2023 report also recorded Adobe XD’s appeal to people familiar with Adobe tools or a Creative Cloud subscription and referenced UXTools surveys from 2021 and 2022. Those are period-specific observations. They do not establish today’s tool rankings, feature availability, or plan value, and they are not current adoption statistics.
