In 2026, browser automation is no longer just “open a page and click.” The practical toolkit now separates four jobs: debug a live run, extend automation into an existing browser session, replay or record a user flow, and watch execution through traces, video, console output, network evidence, and browser panels. Playwright and Chrome DevTools cover these jobs differently. Use Playwright for test orchestration and cross-browser projects, Chrome DevTools for browser-level inspection, and CDP or the Playwright browser extension only when reusing an existing Chromium session is worth its security and fidelity trade-offs.
The four capabilities, at a glance
| Need | Best-fit feature | What you get | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step through a failing test | Playwright VS Code extension or Inspector | Breakpoints, locator picking, actionability logs, call logs and a headed browser | It debugs the Playwright run; it is not a substitute for every browser-internals panel |
| Understand what happened after failure | Playwright Trace Viewer | Action timeline, DOM snapshots, source, console, network and logs | A trace explains recorded evidence; it does not recreate every external service state |
| Reuse a logged-in browser | Playwright channel, CDP endpoint or browser extension | Existing tabs, cookies, profile, SSO/2FA context and extensions, depending on connection mode | CDP is Chromium-only and lower fidelity than the native Playwright protocol; policies may block access |
| Inspect browser internals | Chrome DevTools or browser.debugger |
Elements, Console, Sources, Network, Performance, Memory, Application and protocol domains | Chrome-oriented, permission-sensitive and subject to enterprise/DLP restrictions |
| Capture a repeatable user path | Chrome Recorder or Playwright MCP action recording | Record, edit, replay and measure flows; MCP can return generated Playwright code | Generated steps need assertions and maintenance before becoming a reliable test |
Debug a live Playwright run
For an interactive failure, start with Playwright’s VS Code integration and Inspector. The extension surfaces errors and call logs in the editor, lets you set breakpoints and step, highlights matching elements in a visible browser, and allows locators to be edited or picked against the page.
Use the Inspector from the command line
Run a test in debug mode to open the Inspector and a headed browser:
npx playwright test tests/checkout.spec.ts --debug
In the Inspector, use the step controls, inspect the actionability log, and try a locator before changing code. Debug mode’s documented defaults include no test timeout, which is useful while you pause, but do not confuse that with a production test configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Inspect in VS Code
- Install the Playwright Test for VS Code extension.
- Open a test and click the gutter beside a line to set a breakpoint.
- Start the test from the Playwright sidebar or the editor’s test controls.
- When execution pauses, inspect variables, locator matches and the browser page, then step over or into the next action.
If a selector appears correct but an action still fails, the actionability log often distinguishes “element is hidden,” “covered,” “still animating,” “not enabled,” or “not attached.” Fix the page condition or locator rather than adding an arbitrary sleep.
Open Chrome DevTools during a visible session
When a Playwright browser is visible, Chrome DevTools can be opened for continuous debugging of both the test and application. The Chrome DevTools overview documents the panels you will use most:
- Elements: inspect DOM and CSS, including computed styles.
- Console: review exceptions, warnings and application logs.
- Sources: set JavaScript breakpoints and inspect source.
- Network: correlate failed actions with requests, responses and timing.
- Performance: record a browser performance trace.
- Memory: investigate heap and allocation behavior.
- Application: inspect storage, service workers and other app state.
Browser-specific behavior matters. The Playwright debugging guide warns that launching WebKit Inspector during execution stops the Playwright script and resets preconfigured user-agent and device emulation. Treat each engine’s inspector as a separate workflow.
Capture evidence with Trace Viewer
A trace is the most useful answer to “can you inspect the failed run?” Configure tracing around the test or project, then open the resulting archive with Trace Viewer. The viewer lets you move backward and forward through actions and inspect the DOM snapshot and evidence associated with each one.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Pay' }).click();
await expect(page.getByText('Receipt')).toBeVisible();
});
Enable tracing in a project configuration when you want artifacts for failed tests:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: { trace: 'retain-on-failure' }
});
After a run, open the trace with the Playwright CLI command documented for your installed version, or use the Trace Viewer in the Playwright tooling. The trace can expose:
- Action names, parameters, timing and return values.
- DOM snapshots before and after an action.
- Source locations and Playwright call logs.
- Console messages and uncaught errors.
- Network requests that coincide with a timeout or failed navigation.
Use the evidence to classify the failure: a selector mismatch, a page-state problem, a JavaScript exception, or a network/service issue. A trace is diagnostic history, not a promise that a third-party payment provider, clock, feature flag or backend dataset can be deterministically replayed.

Extend automation into an existing browser
Playwright documents four connection shapes in Connecting to Browsers: a running Chrome or Edge channel, a Chromium CDP endpoint, a browser behind a Playwright server, and the Playwright browser extension.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteConnect by browser channel
For supported Chrome or Edge stable and prerelease channels, enable “Allow remote debugging for this browser instance” in Chrome’s remote-debugging settings, then select the channel in your Playwright configuration. This approach is useful when you want a named installed browser rather than Playwright’s bundled executable.
Connect through CDP
The BrowserType API describes connectOverCDP as attaching Playwright to an existing browser through the Chrome DevTools Protocol:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.connectOverCDP('http://127.0.0.1:9222');
const context = browser.contexts()[0];
const page = context.pages()[0] ?? await context.newPage();
console.log(await page.title());
await browser.close();
Important boundaries:
connectOverCDPis supported only for Chromium-based browsers.- Playwright documents it as significantly lower fidelity than the native Playwright protocol connection, so advanced capabilities may differ.
- Protect the debugging endpoint; anyone who can reach it may gain control of the browser session.
Reuse a session with the Playwright browser extension
Extension mode targets workflows that need an already authenticated profile, SSO or 2FA, installed extensions, or tabs that are open before automation starts. It reuses the session’s cookies and extensions, but it does not bypass authentication controls or guarantee that an application will accept automated actions. Keep personal and test accounts separate.
Use Chrome’s lower-level debugger API
The Chrome browser.debugger API requires the debugger permission and can attach to targets such as tabs, iframes and workers. It can send commands in supported CDP domains, including Console, Debugger, DOM, Network, Performance, Runtime and Tracing. Enterprise host policies can block attachment, screenshot or DLP policies can deny capture, and not every CDP domain is available. This is a transport and permission decision, not a drop-in replacement for Playwright’s test runner.
Record and replay a user flow
Chrome DevTools Recorder
Chrome’s Recorder panel is designed to record, replay, measure and edit user flows. It is practical for capturing a path while investigating a bug or explaining a reproduction to another engineer. Review each step, replace brittle selectors, and add assertions in your test framework before relying on the flow in CI.
Playwright MCP action recording
Playwright MCP debugging tools can record a demonstrated flow and return observed actions as Playwright code in the configured language. The same tools describe tracing, video recording, persistent element highlighting and user annotations returned with a screenshot and accessibility snapshot. A human can point at a visual problem, annotate it, and then hand the resulting evidence to an agent or developer.

Generated code is a starting point. Add explicit assertions, stable role or test-id locators, cleanup, and data isolation. Otherwise a recording may merely reproduce one lucky set of page conditions.
Watch execution while it happens
Combine several evidence streams instead of asking one tool to do everything:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Playwright Inspector: pause, step and inspect actionability.
- Trace: preserve action-by-action snapshots, source, logs, console and network evidence.
- Video: review visual timing and transitions that snapshots miss.
- DevTools: inspect browser state, storage, requests and JavaScript breakpoints.
- MCP annotations: let a person identify an element or visual defect and return a screenshot plus accessibility snapshot.
This observe → extract → act pattern is safer than asking an agent to perform a long, opaque sequence in one prompt. Capture evidence first, decide what it means, then take the smallest corrective action.
Make runs repeatable
Browser version drift is a common source of “works locally” failures. Chrome for Testing is documented as a way to download and pin specific Chrome versions for test environments (official guidance). Pin the browser, Playwright package and operating-system image together where practical. Record the browser channel, viewport, timezone, locale, permissions and authentication state in CI metadata.
An existing personal browser is convenient for diagnosis but changes independently: extensions update, tabs disappear and cookies expire. Prefer a clean, pinned profile for repeatable tests; use an attached session for investigation or flows that genuinely require an existing login.
Choose the connection method
| Scenario | Recommended approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-browser CI test | Native Playwright browser projects | Broader engine coverage and Playwright’s full protocol fidelity |
| Inspect a logged-in Chromium tab | Browser extension or CDP | Reuses the current profile and session |
| Need maximum Playwright capability | Native Playwright connection | CDP attachment is documented as lower fidelity |
| Investigate DOM, storage or requests | Chrome DevTools | Browser-level panels expose state outside a test assertion |
| Turn a human demonstration into code | Recorder or Playwright MCP | Captures an initial flow quickly; code still needs review |
Common failures and fixes
“Cannot connect to browser”
Check that the browser was launched with the expected remote-debugging option or channel, the endpoint and port are reachable, and no policy blocks remote debugging. Confirm that your Playwright and browser versions support the chosen connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCDP connects but features behave strangely
That is consistent with the documented lower fidelity of connectOverCDP. Switch to a native Playwright launch or server connection when you need advanced Playwright behavior or a non-Chromium engine.

Automation sees the wrong account
Verify the selected profile, open pages and cookies. Extension mode reuses an existing session; it does not create an isolated identity. Use a dedicated test profile and authenticate it explicitly.
Recorder replay fails on a later run
Replace generated or positional selectors with role, label or test-id locators; wait for a meaningful application state; and add assertions. A recorded click alone does not prove that the intended result occurred.
Trace is missing
Confirm that tracing is enabled for the project, the test reached teardown, and the artifact was uploaded from the worker. Retain traces on failure to limit storage while preserving diagnostic runs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
