Broadband upload speed is how quickly your connection sends data from your device or home network to the internet. It is the upstream figure on a broadband plan, usually shown in megabits per second (Mbps); download speed measures data coming the other way.

What broadband upload speed means

When you send a file, post a photo, or transmit your video and audio during a call, your connection uploads data. The upload rate describes how quickly that information travels from your device or premises toward the internet. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines broadband connections as wired lines or wireless channels that let an end user receive information from and/or send information to the internet. Its fixed-broadband reporting definition uses a threshold of more than 200 kilobits per second (kbps) in at least one direction; that is a regulatory reporting definition, not a recommended consumer speed. FCC Fixed Broadband Subscription Definitions

Upload speed versus download speed

Providers and regulators generally list the two directions separately. Download, or downstream, is data received by your connection; upload, or upstream, is data sent from it. A plan described as 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload therefore lists two different rates, not one combined speed. The FCC uses that pairing as an example in its broadband data guidance. What an advertised upload speed tells you

An advertised upload number describes the upstream bandwidth associated with a service offering. FCC guidance says advertised bandwidth should represent what an end user reasonably may expect to receive, rather than the connection’s theoretical capacity. If marketing does not state an upstream rate, FCC reporting instructions say to enter the speed the end user should expect. If an advertised rate is given as a range for FCC reporting, the filer reports the high end of that range.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The advertised figure is not a promise that a speed test will show exactly that rate at every moment. A plan’s stated upload speed and a measured result are different kinds of information: one describes the offering, while the other records throughput under the conditions of a particular test. Upload speed is not the same as latency

Upload speed is a rate of data transfer; latency is the time it takes data to travel and return. A connection can have a high upload rate without having low latency, so upload Mbps alone does not describe every aspect of its performance. In U.S. fixed-broadband availability reporting, the FCC defines low latency using round-trip latency of 100 milliseconds or less at the 95th percentile. That is a reporting criterion, not a definition of upload speed. FCC Broadband Data Collection: Fixed Broadband Data

How the FCC’s U.S. benchmarks relate to upload speed

In its 2024 Section 706 report, the FCC raised the U.S. fixed broadband benchmark from 25/3 Mbps to 100/20 Mbps (download/upload) and set a long-term fixed broadband goal of 1,000/500 Mbps. These are policy benchmarks and goals for advanced telecommunications capability, not the meaning of “upload speed” and not a universal minimum for every household or online activity. What to compare when upload matters

When evaluating broadband for a task that sends substantial data, look beyond the plan’s download figure. Compare the advertised upload Mbps with the download rate, and note whether the provider presents upload as a maximum, a range, or an expected rate. Latency and the service technology are also relevant context, but the upload number by itself does not establish which plan is best for a particular household.
