Brittle nails are not listed among the common adverse reactions in the FDA’s reviewed Ozempic prescribing information. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says brittle nails and slower nail growth have been reported in connection with significant weight loss among people taking GLP-1 medicines. That suggests a possible indirect association, not proof that semaglutide directly causes nail brittleness. Other everyday exposures and health conditions can also affect nails.
Can Ozempic cause brittle nails?
The FDA prescribing information for Ozempic lists common adverse reactions, including gastrointestinal symptoms, but does not list brittle nails among them. This means brittle nails are not identified there as a common reaction; it does not rule out an individual experiencing nail changes while taking the medicine or an indirect connection related to weight loss. The AAD reports slower nail growth and brittle nails among nail changes associated with significant weight loss in people using GLP-1 medicines. This is a possible association, not proof of a direct effect of Ozempic on nails, and the cited material does not establish how often it happens specifically to Ozempic users. The AAD discusses these changes in its guidance on GLP-1 medicines and skin, hair, and nail changes.

What else can make nails brittle?
Nail brittleness can have causes unrelated to Ozempic. MedlinePlus describes aging as a common reason for brittle nails. Repeated or prolonged exposure to water and nail polish can make nails peel or become brittle. Thyroid disease, nutritional problems, and nail infections can also change nail appearance. Trauma and inflammatory or systemic conditions may affect nails, too. Brittleness alone cannot identify which cause applies.

- Exposure or aging: Consider whether the change followed frequent wet work, polish use, a manicure, nail injury, or gradual age-related changes.
- Weight change or medication timing: Note when the nails changed and whether this coincided with starting Ozempic or significant weight loss. Timing can help a clinician assess the situation, but does not establish the cause.
- Other health clues: Tell a clinician about other symptoms, relevant medical conditions, medications, and nutrition history. Do not try to diagnose a thyroid or nutritional problem from nail appearance alone.
- Infection or another nail condition: Changes in color, texture, or shape may need examination to identify the cause.

When should you see a doctor?
Arrange medical advice if nail changes persist, worsen, hurt, peel, or become distorted. Have nail lifting or redness and swelling around a nail examined. A new or changing dark streak should be assessed by a dermatologist. MedlinePlus advises contacting a healthcare provider immediately for splinter hemorrhages or Hutchinson sign, a dark discoloration that extends onto the skin around the nail. People with diabetes or poor circulation should take nail problems seriously and seek advice; the AAD explains which nail changes a dermatologist should examine. MedlinePlus also lists nail changes that warrant contacting a provider.

For an appointment, useful context includes when the change began; whether one or several nails are affected; any weight change or medication start around that time; other symptoms; recent manicures or polish; repeated wet work or nail injury; and your medication and nutrition history. A clinician can examine the nails and decide whether tests or a referral are appropriate.
Do not stop or change Ozempic on your own because your nails are brittle. Tell the prescribing clinician about the change and ask whether its timing, weight loss, nutrition, another medication, or a separate nail condition should be evaluated.

What can you do for brittle nails while you arrange care?
Moisturizing cuticles is a general skin-care measure the AAD suggests for people using GLP-1 medicines. MedlinePlus also describes applying an emollient after washing or bathing. These steps may support skin and cuticle care, but they do not diagnose or treat an underlying cause such as infection, thyroid disease, or a nutritional problem. The AAD’s GLP-1 skin-care guidance includes cuticle moisturization.
Do not start high-dose biotin or other supplements by default. The cited guidance does not establish a supplement as treatment for Ozempic-associated nail brittleness. If you suspect a nutritional problem, ask a clinician whether evaluation is appropriate.
