In 2007, Brion Technologies introduced Tachyon Lithography Aware Design (LAD), a tool intended to help IC designers find layout features that might print incorrectly before tapeout. It modeled how a lithography process could reproduce GDSII layout data, then showed likely trouble spots and suggested possible corrections. It did not edit the layout itself: an EDA tool made any geometry changes.
What Tachyon LAD was designed to do
Brion presented Tachyon LAD as a way to bring computational lithography analysis earlier into chip design. Instead of waiting until a design was deep in manufacturing preparation, designers could use the tool to examine layout data for features vulnerable to lithography-related errors.
In its May 28, 2007 report, EE Times described Tachyon LAD as analyzing GDSII layout data and modeling how the lithography process might reproduce the design on silicon. Its output included modeled silicon contours and likely lithography hot spots—areas where the printed result could differ problematically from the intended layout.
How it fit into the design workflow
It analyzed and flagged possible print problems
The modeled contours gave designers a view of how layout shapes might appear after lithographic imaging. Hot spots helped draw attention to areas that could merit review before tapeout, when making design changes can be more difficult and costly.

It suggested corrections but did not make them
Tachyon LAD provided hints in scripts that described an issue, its severity, and possible corrections. The connected EDA software performed the actual layout edits. That distinction matters: LAD was a modeling and guidance tool, not an automatic layout-repair system.
Its predictions depended on foundry calibration
EE Times reported that Brion’s model relied on foundry calibration data. In practical terms, the simulation’s usefulness depended on process-specific information; the report does not support treating it as a universal predictor of how every foundry would print a design without calibration.

Why Brion took computational lithography toward designers
Brion’s pitch was that manufacturing-process knowledge could help designers make layouts more compatible with manufacturing. Mike Gianfagna, then Brion’s vice president of design business, described the aim as packaging Brion’s core expertise so an IC designer could understand what the manufacturing process would do to a design. His comments appeared in the 2007 EE Times report.
Brion positioned itself as a supplier of core modeling technology rather than an IC implementation-tool vendor. The report said it planned to distribute LAD through initial EDA partners Cadence Design Systems, Magma Design Automation, and Japan’s Tool Corp. Those names describe the planned 2007 channel; they do not establish current partnerships.

How LAD related to Brion and ASML’s broader lithography work
ASML announced on March 8, 2007, that it had completed its acquisition of Brion. It said Brion would operate as a wholly owned subsidiary and continue its product offering. ASML’s announcement provides the acquisition context, but does not establish the later availability of Tachyon LAD.
In a December 3, 2008 release, ASML described the broader Tachyon platform as an OPC and OPC-verification system spanning chip design, photomask making, and wafer printing. It characterized computational lithography as computer modeling used to predict, correct, optimize, and verify imaging across patterns, processes, and system conditions. That broader platform description supplies context for Brion’s work; it should not be read as a list of functions specifically documented for LAD in 2007.

A separate example of Brion’s manufacturing-oriented portfolio came in ASML’s November 2, 2009 announcement: Chartered Semiconductor would use Brion’s Tachyon OPC+, lithography manufacturability check (LMC), and resolution-enhancement products for 45 nm and smaller-node devices. That customer example concerns those products, not proof that LAD remained on sale.

The May 2007 EE Times report said cost depended on configuration but did not give a price. The historical sources establish that Brion announced and planned to distribute Tachyon LAD in 2007; they do not establish whether it is available or supported today. There is no substantiated current price or performance figure for the tool in these sources.
