The right Breville espresso machine depends on how much of the coffee routine you want the machine to handle. Choose the Bambino if you want a compact machine and are happy to use a separate grinder; the Barista Express if you want an integrated grinder but prefer hands-on milk texturing; the Express Impress if you want help with tamping and dosing; the Touch Impress if you want guided controls and automatic milk texturing; or the Oracle Jet if you want the most automated workflow in this comparison. These specifications are from Breville’s US product comparison pages, not independent tests.
Which Breville espresso machine should you buy?
Start with the steps you want to do yourself. Grinding, preparing the coffee puck, and texturing milk are separate parts of the workflow; an integrated grinder or automated milk system can reduce manual work, but it does not guarantee a better-tasting drink. The table compares the models using specifications listed on Breville’s US pages, accessed in 2026.
| Model | Grinder and puck preparation | Milk and controls | Capacity and size | US limited warranty listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bambino | No integrated burr grinder; manual tamper | Manual milk texturing; button controls | 47 fl oz tank; 11.9 × 6.1 × 13.5 in | 1 year |
| Barista Express | Integrated steel conical burr grinder; 16 settings | Manual milk texturing; button controls | 67 fl oz tank; half-pound bean hopper; 15.9 × 13.1 × 12.4 in | 1 year |
| Barista Express Impress | Integrated grinder; 25 settings; assisted tamping and dose feedback | Manual milk texturing | 2 L tank; 250 g bean hopper; 16.6 × 14.4 × 12.2 in | 2 years |
| Barista Touch Impress | Integrated grinder; 30 settings; assisted tamping | Touchscreen, presets, saved custom drinks, hands-free Auto MilQ texturing | Not stated on the cited comparison page | 2 years |
| Oracle Jet | Automatic grinding, dosing, and tamping; 45 settings | 13 preset recipes, 20-plus customizable drink options, hands-free Auto MilQ texturing | 77 fl oz tank; 340 g bean hopper; 16.6 × 14.2 × 14.9 in | 2 years |
Tank capacities, dimensions, grinder settings, and warranties above are manufacturer specifications listed on the cited US comparison pages. Breville’s comparison pages do not provide a current, dependable basis here for comparing live prices or promotions.

Separate grinder and compact machine: Bambino
The Bambino is the smallest-footprint choice among the models in this comparison, at 11.9 × 6.1 × 13.5 inches. It has no integrated burr grinder, so plan on a separate grinder or, where appropriate, pre-ground coffee. Breville lists a 47 fl oz tank, a 54 mm portafilter, button controls, a manual tamper, and manual milk texturing on its US comparison page. It suits buyers who value a compact machine and are comfortable handling the rest of the workflow.

Integrated grinder, hands-on routine: Barista Express
The Barista Express combines the espresso machine and a steel conical burr grinder with 16 settings. That avoids a separate grinder appliance, but grinding adjustment and manual milk texturing remain part of making a drink. Its US comparison listing gives a half-pound bean hopper and a 67 fl oz tank. Choose this workflow if you want the grinder built in and do not mind learning the hands-on steps.
Help with tamping and dose: Barista Express Impress
The Express Impress keeps a grinder-equipped workflow while adding assisted tamping and dose-level feedback. It still leaves milk texturing to you. Breville lists 25 grind settings, a 250 g hopper, and a 2 L tank in its US comparison. This is a fit for someone who wants guidance while preparing the coffee puck, but prefers manual control of milk.

Guided controls and automatic milk: Barista Touch Impress
The Touch Impress adds a touchscreen, drink presets, and the ability to save custom drinks, alongside assisted tamping and hands-free Auto MilQ milk texturing. Breville says the milk system has settings for dairy and several alternative milks. Its US comparison lists 30 grind settings and a two-year limited warranty; the cited comparison does not state its dimensions or tank capacity. Consider it if reducing the number of manual steps and using on-screen guidance matter more than having complete hands-on control.
More automated preparation: Oracle Jet
The Oracle Jet automates grinding, dosing, and tamping, and includes hands-free Auto MilQ milk texturing. Breville’s US comparison lists 45 grind settings, a 58 mm portafilter, 13 preset recipes, and more than 20 customizable drink options. It is the largest-footprint model in the comparison with stated dimensions: 16.6 × 14.2 × 14.9 inches. The listed 77 fl oz tank is the largest capacity among the models with stated tank sizes here. This is the automation-focused option, but verify its current price and regional version before deciding.

Is the Bambino or Barista Express better for home?
Neither is universally better; the trade-off is a smaller separate-grinder setup versus a larger all-in-one appliance. The Bambino is the compact route if you already own, or are willing to buy, a separate grinder and want a straightforward button-controlled machine. The Barista Express integrates a grinder, saving the space and extra purchase of a second appliance, but the routine still involves manual milk texturing and grinder adjustment.
Compare the available counter space with the listed dimensions, not just the machine’s width. For example, Breville lists the Bambino at 6.1 inches wide and the Barista Express at 15.9 inches wide; allow additional room for access to the tank, beans, and cleaning. Those dimensions are manufacturer-listed US specifications, not a measure of usable counter clearance.
Rank #4
- MANUAL HAND-TEXTURED MICROFOAM: The powerful steam wand included with this cappuccino and latte machine is designed to quickly turn milk into smooth, flavorful microfoam for latte art at home
- INTELLIGENT DOSING: The smart dosing system in this bean-to-cup espresso machine automatically calculates and adjusts the level of fresh coffee for a precise dose, every time
- PRECISION MEASURMENT: Espresso coffee maker also includes a smart system which auto corrects the next dose, taking the guesswork out of manual espresso making
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- ASSISTED TAMPING: Replicating the action of a professional barista, assisted tamping features 7 degree 'barista twist' finish and consistent 10kg of pressure, for a polished puck surface and clean tamp face
Do you need a built-in grinder?
A built-in grinder is useful when you want fewer separate appliances and a single integrated workflow. It is not essential to choosing an espresso machine: the Bambino has no integrated burr grinder, while the Barista Express, Express Impress, Touch Impress, and Oracle Jet have grinder-equipped workflows. If you choose a separate grinder, account for its counter space and the extra step of moving ground coffee to the portafilter.
Grind-setting counts are not a quality score. Breville lists 16 settings for the Barista Express, 25 for the Express Impress, 30 for the Touch Impress, and 45 for the Oracle Jet, but a larger number alone does not establish better espresso or prove that settings are directly comparable between models.
Is the Barista Touch Impress worth the extra cost?
That depends on the price difference at the time and value you place on convenience. The Touch Impress offers a touchscreen, presets and saved drinks, assisted tamping, and automatic milk texturing; the Express Impress has assisted tamping and dose feedback but manual milk texturing. A live price comparison is necessary to decide whether the added automation is worth paying for, and no fixed price or promotion is established by the cited specifications.
Quick Recap
Check fit, warranty, and regional details before buying
- Measure the counter: compare the listed dimensions with the space available, including room to reach the water tank and bean hopper.
- Check what is included: confirm the exact model’s accessories and whether a separate grinder is needed.
- Verify your country’s version: check voltage, product availability, and warranty terms on the listing for your region. The warranty durations in this guide are those listed on Breville’s US comparison pages, not a promise of coverage elsewhere.
