Martín Pérez will not pitch for the Atlanta Braves in their National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Manager Walt Weiss ruled him out on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, and said he could be a possibility for the NLCS only if Atlanta advances.
“}
What Weiss said and what it means
According to a CBS Sports/RotoWire report on Oct. 2, Weiss said Pérez would not be available at any point in the NLDS. He placed Pérez in the same conditional group as injured pitcher Bryce Elder. In Weiss’s words, “I think he’s in the same category as Bryce where, if we advance, there’s a chance there.” That is a possibility, not a confirmed plan. Neither the manager’s comment nor the reports that carried it establish that Pérez will be ready or activated for the NLCS.
Injury and timing
Pérez was placed on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation. The move was retroactive to Sept. 21. MLB reported that he felt discomfort during his Sept. 20 start in Houston, and that the discomfort continued despite treatment during the following week. The reports do not establish a more specific diagnosis than lower back inflammation.
| Date | What was reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sept. 20, 2026 | Pérez felt discomfort during his start in Houston | MLB |
| Sept. 21, 2026 | Injured list placement, retroactive to this date | MLB |
| Sept. 25, 2026 | MLB report listed his record and ERA as of that date (see season numbers below) | MLB |
| Sept. 28, 2026 | Played catch in the outfield | MLB injury report, Sept. 30 |
| Sept. 30, 2026 | Expected return date not yet set | MLB injury report |
| Oct. 2, 2026 | Weiss rules him out for the NLDS; NLCS possible only if Atlanta advances | CBS Sports/RotoWire; Field Level Media |
| Oct. 6, 2026 | Earliest activation date under the injured list timing; the date originally scheduled for NLDS Game 3 | MLB |
Eligibility is not availability
Oct. 6 was the earliest date Pérez could be activated under the injured list timing. It was not a return date. The Oct. 2 update ruled him out for the entire series, so the eligibility date and the availability decision point in different directions. Readers following the series should treat Oct. 6 as a rule-based date only.

Throwing progression
The CBS Sports/RotoWire update said it was unclear whether Pérez had done any throwing since the injury. The only documented step after the injury is the Sept. 28 catch in the outfield. No later throwing schedule has been confirmed.
2026 season numbers
The most recent figures in the reports are a 9-9 record with a 3.04 ERA in 30 appearances, including 26 starts, as reported in the Oct. 2 Field Level Media report. An earlier MLB report dated Sept. 25 listed a 3.12 ERA in 26 starts. The two figures likely reflect different report dates or statistical snapshots. If you quote the ERA, cite the source and date with it.

- A diagnosis more specific than lower back inflammation.

- A firm return date.
- Whether he will be on the NLCS roster if Atlanta advances.
Speculation about his recovery timeline is not supported by the reports. Avoid describing him as certain to return in any later round.
