Boston Dynamics’ furry robot dog is Spot wearing a custom, shimmering costume. Called Sparkles, it appeared alongside an uncovered Spot in a short dance video released in April 2024. The company presented the outfit as a creative exploration of robotics, art, and entertainment—not as a new Spot model or a practical upgrade.
What is Spot Sparkles?
Sparkles is Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot dressed in a custom-made, bedazzled fur costume. It is not a separate robot model. Boston Dynamics described it as “a custom costume designed just for Spot to explore the intersections of robotics, art, and entertainment,” as quoted by Plant Services.
The name refers to the costumed presentation, while Spot is the underlying quadruped robot. In the April 2024 video, Sparkles dances with an uncovered Spot, and the pair touch noses. The clip’s visual contrast is the point: one robot appears in its familiar uncovered form; the other looks like a fantastical, furry character. Futurism’s coverage also noted the humorous viewer reaction, “Humans have invented: dog.” That was a commenter’s joke, not Boston Dynamics’ description.

Why did Boston Dynamics put fur on Spot?
The company framed Sparkles as an art-and-entertainment demonstration. The costume gives a mechanical robot a more character-like appearance, and the paired dance presents Spot in a playful setting rather than an industrial one. The sources describing the reveal do not identify a work task or functional benefit for the outfit.

- No motors, no batteries — just the power of air pressure, water, and your own hands!
- Hydraulic pistons enable the mechanical fingers to open and close and grip objects with enough force to lift them. Every finger joint can be adjusted to different angles for precision movement.
- Three configurations: right hand, left hand, and claw-like; adjustable to fit virtually any human hand.

That distinction matters: the video shows a costume and choreographed performance, not evidence that fur improves Spot’s capabilities. No published comparison in the cited coverage establishes a change in navigation, safety, or other performance measures.
How does Sparkles compare with uncovered Spot?
| Presentation | What appears in the video | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Uncovered Spot | Spot in its familiar, uncostumed form, dancing with Sparkles. | A visual counterpart in the choreographed pairing; no measured performance comparison is reported. |
| Sparkles | Spot wearing a shimmering, bedazzled fur costume and dancing with uncovered Spot. | A custom costume for a creative demonstration; no costume-specific performance results are reported. |
The video supports a comparison of appearance and role in the dance, not a technical assessment of the two robots.

Does fur affect how Spot operates?
A separate Spot film production offers a useful example of possible trade-offs, but it does not document Sparkles’ effects. In an October 2022 account, Czech Technical University described preparing Spot for the film Ordinary Failures. The working robot wore a fur coat, which made cooling and handling difficult. Side depth cameras normally used to perceive nearby terrain were switched off for some shots, and Spot followed the operator’s instructions mechanically. Some carrying scenes used a 3D-printed model rather than the working robot.
Those details concern that film’s coat and production, not Sparkles. The cited sources do not specify Sparkles’ materials, designer, cost, or operational effects.

Can you buy the Sparkles costume?
The sources describe Sparkles as custom-made for Spot and do not identify a seller, an official Boston Dynamics costume line, or a retail version. They therefore do not establish that consumers can buy the costume. A custom robot covering made for a production or event is not the same as a listed consumer accessory.

Furry character robots have appeared in later, separate reporting. On September 8, 2026, Fortune reported that Dynamic Creatures was prototyping character robots built on Spot, including a poodle-like robot named Danielle. The company’s co-founder described intended settings such as elementary schools, theme parks, and shopping malls. That is a separate effort; it does not make Sparkles a new Spot model or establish that its costume is available to buy.
