The Bose SoundLink Bluetooth speaker III—often called the SoundLink 3—has a manufacturer-stated battery life of up to 14 hours in typical use. Bose says actual runtime varies with the audio content and playback volume, so 14 hours is an estimate, not a guarantee. The recommended full charge takes three hours, and you can play music while the speaker is charging.
What does “up to 14 hours” mean?
Bose’s 2013 Quick Start Guide gives the SoundLink Bluetooth speaker III a typical-use runtime of up to 14 hours. That is Bose’s own estimate, not an independent test result. Bose specifically notes that runtime varies with both the content being played and the loudness. A speaker used at higher volume, or with different audio, may not reach the stated maximum.
For a fair comparison with another portable speaker, compare each manufacturer’s runtime claim alongside its stated conditions. Also consider charging time, whether playback works during charging, and whether battery replacement is user-serviceable or handled by the manufacturer.

Bose recommends three hours for a full charge. For first use, the Quick Start Guide says to connect the speaker to AC power and charge it for three hours. You can continue listening while it is connected to power.

If the speaker has been unplugged and unused for more than 24 days, Bose says its battery enters protection mode. Connecting the speaker to AC power reactivates it; this behavior is not, by itself, a diagnosis of battery failure.
When is shorter battery life a warning sign?
A noticeable decline in operating time can indicate that the battery needs attention. Bose’s Owner’s Guide gives a more specific warning sign: if the battery indicator is still blinking yellow after ten hours of charging, consider replacing the battery.

Bose says only Bose can replace the battery in this speaker and directs owners to contact the Bose organization in their country or region. The SoundLink Bluetooth speaker III is a legacy product: Bose Support lists it as sold from 2014 to 2017. Service eligibility may vary by region and over time, so check with Bose for current options rather than assuming repair is available everywhere.
What to check if the battery light stays red
Bose’s support article for a battery light that is always red advises checking that the connected power outlet works. If the outlet is working and the problem remains, use the repair or replacement option on Bose’s support page for the model.

Because the speaker is an older model, a persistent charging-light problem and reduced runtime are reasons to contact Bose support, not proof that a particular repair or replacement is currently available in your area.

The Owner’s Guide lists the AC power supply input as 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, 600 mA, with an output of 17 V DC, 1 A maximum. It lists the speaker input as 17–20 V DC, 1 A maximum. These electrical ratings can help narrow adapter options, but they do not establish that any adapter with a matching voltage will fit or work safely.

Before buying a replacement adapter, verify the exact speaker model, connector, and regional plug. Bose’s documentation does not support treating a generic adapter as compatible based on voltage alone.
