Bootstrap 5.3 gives you semantic theme colors, color utilities, Sass customization, and light/dark color modes. Use .text-* for text, .bg-* for backgrounds, and .text-bg-* when you want Bootstrap to set both; use Sass when you need to change the compiled theme or generate additional utility classes. Check the version installed in your project: the versioned documentation covered here is Bootstrap v5.3 and currently identifies itself as v5.3.8.
Bootstrap’s color palette and theme colors
Bootstrap has a broad palette of named colors and a smaller semantic theme palette. The palette provides design values; the theme map connects a limited set of names to component variants and many generated utilities.

Bootstrap also includes neutral colors. These generic colors are not the same as theme names, and Bootstrap does not generate every possible text and background utility for every palette shade by default. See the Bootstrap color utilities documentation and theme color documentation.
The standard $theme-colors map contains primary, secondary, success, info, warning, danger, light, and dark. Primary is used for prominent theme elements such as links, focus styles, and active component or form states. Success signals a positive result; danger signals an error or dangerous action; warning is for non-destructive warnings; and info is for neutral or informative content. Light and dark provide additional theme options.

Use these roles consistently, but do not rely on the color alone to tell users what a status means.
Choose the utility that matches the job
Color text with .text-*
Use classes such as .text-primary, .text-success, or .text-danger to color text. Bootstrap’s opacity mechanism uses RGB CSS variables, so opacity can be adjusted without recompiling Sass. Check the exact utility and mode behavior in the color utilities documentation.
Set a background with .bg-*
.bg-primary, .bg-success, and related classes set a background, not a foreground text color. Pair a background with a deliberate text color, or use a helper that sets both. The background utilities documentation describes these classes and their subtle variants.
Set text and background together with .text-bg-*
Use a helper such as .text-bg-primary or .text-bg-warning when the element needs a theme background and a contrasting foreground. Bootstrap uses its Sass color-contrast() function to choose a foreground. A customized theme can still create insufficient contrast, so verify the rendered pairing rather than assuming the helper guarantees accessibility.

Style links with .link-*
Classes such as .link-primary provide hover and focus states as well as a link color. Preserve recognizable link behavior and confirm that keyboard focus remains visible after changing colors. Bootstrap describes the behavior in its color utilities documentation.
Use subtle surfaces and emphasis in v5.3
Bootstrap 5.3 provides theme variants such as .bg-primary-subtle, .border-primary-subtle, and .text-primary-emphasis. They are intended to adapt across color modes. For example:

What changes in light and dark mode
Bootstrap 5.3 introduced color modes based on the data-bs-theme attribute and the Sass color-mode() mixin. A common setup applies the dark mode at the document root:

<html lang="en" data-bs-theme="dark">Bootstrap’s color modes documentation also explains scoped modes and custom named modes. A mode changes values supplied through the relevant variables; hard-coded colors or custom CSS that bypasses those variables may not change with it.
Do not assume that every older theme utility automatically switches color. In the Bootstrap v5.3 documentation, the original theme-map .text-* and .bg-* classes are not uniformly mode-adaptive. The newer .text-*-emphasis and .bg-*-subtle variants are intended to adapt. Inspect the actual foreground, background, border, and focus colors in every mode your interface supports.
How to change Bootstrap colors
Choose the method by the scope of the change. A one-off visual treatment can use utilities or local CSS; a runtime mode override should use the variables Bootstrap exposes for that mode; a site-wide theme or new generated utility calls for Sass. Bootstrap’s versioned guidance is in Sass customization and color customization.

Change an existing theme color with Sass
Set a token before Bootstrap consumes the theme map, then compile the Sass. For example, the documented customization pattern allows changing existing values such as $primary and $danger. The exact import sequence depends on how Bootstrap Sass is integrated into your project; follow the documentation for your installed version rather than pasting a partial override after the compiled CSS.

Add a theme color and generate utilities
To add a theme color, merge it into $theme-colors before Bootstrap generates dependent styles. The additional theme entry can produce corresponding theme-based utilities and component variants. Bootstrap also documents its utilities API for generating classes for colors outside the default theme map, such as a project-specific .text-purple-500.
Do not remove or rename standard keys casually: Bootstrap components may reference them during Sass compilation. If your design needs a custom color but not a new semantic component variant, consider whether a narrowly scoped CSS rule is simpler than expanding the generated utility set.

Bootstrap’s official color utility guidance warns that using color to add meaning provides only a visual indication and is not conveyed to screen-reader users. Pair a colored status with visible text, an icon with an accessible name, or another non-color cue; use visually hidden text when appropriate. The Bootstrap team also advises: “Be sure to monitor contrast ratios as you customize colors.”

For WCAG 2.2 Level AA, the W3C’s 2023 standard sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. At Level AAA, the corresponding minimums are 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. WCAG defines exceptions, including inactive UI components, purely decorative or invisible text, and text that is part of a logo or brand name. Consult the W3C WCAG 2.2 standard for the criteria and exceptions.
- Check the actual text against its rendered background, including subtle surfaces and hover states.
- Check borders, icons, focus indicators, and disabled or active states where they convey information.
- Test both light and dark modes, including any component-level mode overrides.
- Keep labels or other cues with status colors so meaning does not depend on color perception alone.
