Use McAfee alongside your phone’s built-in protections—not instead of them. McAfee currently offers a mobile security app for Android and iOS, but its US product page lists antivirus for Android only. Its other tools, such as scam detection, safe browsing, identity monitoring, VPN, and cleanup features, may depend on your device, plan, and location. Check your app listing and subscription to see what is actually available to you.
How do I use McAfee on my phone?
Start with the official app store, confirm that the app and subscription match your needs, then enable relevant features and keep using your phone’s own security settings. McAfee directs Android users to Google Play and iPhone users to Apple’s App Store. Feature lists and availability can differ by operating system, plan, and region, so verify the current listing and the features shown in your subscription before relying on them. McAfee’s US mobile security page describes its current platform features.
- Open Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone and find McAfee’s official app listing.
- Review the listing’s supported features and the subscription details for your region.
- After installation, open the app and enable only the features you want and your plan supports. Review the permissions it requests.
- Use the phone’s built-in update, privacy, and app-protection controls as well.
1. Confirm which McAfee protections your phone supports
McAfee’s product descriptions distinguish Android from iOS. Its US page lists antivirus for Android, while the iOS feature list includes tools such as safe browsing, identity monitoring, VPN, and system scanning—not iPhone antivirus scanning equivalent to Android app scanning. The exact feature set can vary. Check McAfee’s current mobile feature list and compare it with the features shown in your app and subscription.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not assume that a feature mentioned on a general product page is included in every plan. A paid subscription may offer more than a basic or free app experience, but inclusions vary; check the subscription screen for your market rather than relying on a feature name alone. McAfee’s mobile support information can help with app and subscription questions.

2. Turn on the McAfee features that match your risks
McAfee describes several mobile tools, but each has a particular scope. Use the controls available in your app and plan; none should be treated as a guarantee that every threat will be detected or blocked.
- Scam detection: McAfee markets detection for scams involving texts, email, and video. Treat a warning as a reason to pause and verify, not as proof that every unflagged message is safe.
- Safe browsing: This can help flag risky websites or links, depending on the device and feature availability. It does not make every site trustworthy.
- Identity monitoring: This can alert you to specified identity-related risks covered by the service. It is not a substitute for protecting accounts with strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication.
- VPN: A VPN routes network traffic through an encrypted connection. It does not make a fraudulent website, message, or app safe, and availability depends on the plan and location.
- Antivirus: McAfee lists antivirus for Android, not iPhone. Do not expect iOS to receive Android-style scanning of installed apps.
McAfee’s feature descriptions are available on its US mobile security page; check your own app and subscription for the controls you can use.

3. Keep your phone’s operating system and apps updated
Updates can include security fixes as well as feature changes. Make checking for them part of your routine, and install updates from the phone’s built-in settings and official app store. On Android 13 and later, Google’s combined Security and privacy overview includes system update status. On Android 12 and earlier, security and privacy settings may appear in separate menus. Menu names can vary by manufacturer. Google’s Android security and privacy guide describes the available controls.
- Install operating-system updates when they are available for your device.
- Update apps through Google Play or the App Store.
- If an update is delayed or fails, check the phone’s available storage and network connection, then revisit its update settings.
4. Review app permissions and remove unnecessary access
Permission reviews help you spot apps with access that no longer makes sense for how you use them. Revoke access you do not want; an app may lose a feature that depends on that permission.

On iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security and choose a data category, such as Location Services, Contacts, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, or Camera, to review which apps have access. Apple also offers Safety Check on iOS 16 or later to review sharing, connected devices, and app privacy permissions. Some Safety Check options may be unavailable when device-management restrictions apply. See Apple’s guide to controlling app access to information and its Safety Check guide.
On Android
Open Settings > Security and privacy to find privacy permissions on Android 13 and later. On Android 12 and earlier, security and privacy controls may be in separate settings menus. Manufacturer interfaces differ, so use Settings search for “permissions” or “privacy” if the path is not present. Google explains the overview in its Android security and privacy guide.

5. Keep Google Play Protect enabled on Android
McAfee does not replace the phone’s built-in app protections. Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and can scan potentially harmful apps from other sources. Google says it may warn you about an app, deactivate it, or remove it. These protections are useful alongside McAfee’s Android features. Learn more in Google’s Play Protect guide.

On Google Play, review an app’s Data safety section before installing it. Google says these disclosures are provided by developers and describe data handling; they are not the same as the app’s technical permissions list, and the two may not match exactly. Compare the disclosure with the permissions requested and with what the app needs to do. The section applies to apps distributed on Google Play. See Google’s Data safety section explanation.

- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.

- PERSONAL DATA SCANS – Take your info off the market. We’ll find your personal information on sites selling it, then guide you on how to remove it.
- SOCIAL PRIVACY MANAGER – Decide what you share. McAfee finds the privacy settings buried in your social accounts and fixes them.
These details help you make a more informed choice, but they are not an independent certification that an app is safe. If the developer’s stated data practices or requested access do not make sense for the app’s purpose, consider not installing it.
7. Pause and verify unexpected messages, links, and requests
McAfee markets scam detection for texts, email, and video, and Android’s optional Advanced Protection can enable protections such as scam detection, unsafe-link warnings, and Android Safe Browsing on supported devices, apps, and in supported regions. Availability is not universal; Google outlines the feature and its conditions in its Android Advanced Protection guide.
Whether or not a warning appears, independently verify urgent requests for money, passwords, verification codes, or account changes. Contact the person or organization through a number or website you already know is genuine—not a link or phone number in the message. A warning is a useful cue to stop and check; the absence of one is not proof that a request is legitimate.

Does McAfee work on iPhone?
Yes. McAfee currently markets a mobile security app for iOS. Its listed iPhone tools include features such as safe browsing, identity monitoring, VPN, and system scanning, subject to device, plan, and location. Those tools are not the same as antivirus scanning of installed iPhone apps: McAfee’s US feature page lists antivirus for Android only. Apple’s own privacy controls and Safety Check remain important parts of iPhone security.
Does McAfee have antivirus for iPhone?
McAfee’s US mobile feature descriptions list antivirus for Android, not iOS. Do not interpret an iPhone feature such as system scanning or safe browsing as Android-style antivirus app scanning. For the current platform distinction, consult McAfee’s mobile feature page.
Quick Recap
How do I know whether a mobile app is safe?
- Install it from the official app store where possible.
- Review its developer, purpose, ratings, and current privacy disclosures before installing.
- On Google Play, compare the Data safety section with the permissions the app requests; they provide different information.
- Be cautious when an app asks for access unrelated to its purpose.
- Keep the app and phone updated, and heed built-in or McAfee warnings without treating any single check as a guarantee.
