Yes—Bobsled offered free calls to regular U.S., Canadian and Puerto Rican phone numbers, but the feature reached browsers first and Android and iOS later. In October 2011, T-Mobile expanded Bobsled beyond Facebook calling: most desktop browsers could call Facebook friends and dial ordinary phone numbers, while the mobile apps initially focused on Facebook friends. A January 2012 update added phone-number dial-out in the apps. These are historical details; the available announcements do not establish whether Bobsled still works today.
What Bobsled added in October 2011
Bobsled began as a Facebook calling service. T-Mobile’s October 2011 expansion extended it to most desktop web browsers and introduced apps for Android and Apple devices. In a browser, users could select a Facebook friend to start a call, send a message or leave a voice message. The apps were offered for Android smartphones and tablets and for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch through the Android Market and Apple’s App Store, respectively. The announcement is dated October 9, 2011, and describes the announcement as made in Bellevue, Washington, on October 10. T-Mobile’s announcement
Could Bobsled call regular phone numbers for free?
Yes. The October 2011 browser service could dial mobile and landline numbers in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico at no charge for the call. T-Mobile said users could do this from anywhere in the world with an open Internet connection; the destinations, however, were limited to those three territories. The initial announcement described this ordinary-number dial-out for browser users, not for the mobile apps.
Phone-number calling came to Android and iOS in January 2012
T-Mobile’s January 2012 update added outgoing calls from the Android and iOS apps to U.S., Canadian and Puerto Rican phone numbers over a data connection. The company cautioned that data rates might apply, so “free” referred to the call charge and did not necessarily mean that connecting to the Internet incurred no cost. T-Mobile’s January 2012 update

Did Bobsled work on Android and iPhone?
Yes. The October 2011 release listed Android smartphones and tablets, plus Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. At launch, the stated mobile calling and voice-messaging feature was for Facebook friends. The January 2012 update expanded the mobile apps to dial ordinary phone numbers in the supported destinations as well. Using those calls required a data connection, and data charges could apply.
Could you use Bobsled from a web browser?
Yes. T-Mobile described the service as available in most Internet browsers. A browser user could call a Facebook friend by clicking the friend’s name, as well as dial a regular U.S., Canadian or Puerto Rican mobile or landline number. Bobsled therefore combined Facebook-to-Facebook communication with browser-based calls to conventional phone lines; the two functions had different reach and platform details.

Was Bobsled limited to T-Mobile customers?
No. T-Mobile framed Bobsled as a service that worked beyond its wireless customer base. In a May 2012 update, the company reported more than one million users and more than 10 million calls since April 2011. It also said 95% of Bobsled Calling users were not T-Mobile wireless subscribers. T-Mobile reported that 80% of calls to phone numbers originated outside the United States; that figure describes call origins, not the destinations Bobsled supported. The same update said 90% of Bobsled messages were sent domestically. These are company-reported figures from 2012, not current usage statistics. T-Mobile’s May 2012 update

What happened to Bobsled calling?
The cited T-Mobile announcements document Bobsled’s expansion and adoption in 2011–2012, but they do not provide a current service-status notice or confirm that its apps or browser service remain operational. As a result, the historical features described here should not be taken as a claim that Bobsled is available in 2026.
