For a small, nearby transfer, Bluetooth is a straightforward option in Windows. For a large file, choose a supported Wi-Fi-based sharing path when one is available: Microsoft describes Bluetooth transfers as much slower than Wi-Fi. One important distinction: Windows Nearby sharing can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but that does not mean every Wi-Fi transfer uses Wi-Fi Direct.

Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi Direct: what is the difference?

Bluetooth file transfer is a built-in Windows workflow for sending files between nearby devices. Wi-Fi Direct, by contrast, is a peer-to-peer connection technology: it can connect devices without a wireless access point, but it is not a universal Windows file-transfer button. An app or feature must use the connection to send files.

Windows Nearby sharing is a separate user-facing feature that can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 instructions say its Wi-Fi path is available when both PCs are connected to the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise, sharing uses Bluetooth. Those instructions do not establish that this Wi-Fi path is Wi-Fi Direct. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi Direct documentation covers the peer-to-peer API, while Nearby sharing instructions describe the consumer feature.

Consideration Bluetooth file transfer Wi-Fi Direct or Windows Wi-Fi sharing
What it is A Windows file-transfer flow for nearby paired devices. Wi-Fi Direct connects devices peer-to-peer; a compatible app or feature must handle the transfer. Nearby sharing separately supports Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
Router or internet Does not require an internet connection. Wi-Fi Direct does not need a wireless access point. The documented Windows 11 Nearby sharing Wi-Fi path requires both PCs on the same private Wi-Fi network.
Relative speed Microsoft says Bluetooth is much slower than Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends Wi-Fi for faster large-file transfers. The reviewed guidance gives no measured throughput figure.
Setup Pair devices, put the recipient in receive mode, and send through Bluetooth File Transfer. Setup depends on the app or feature. A desktop app using the Wi-Fi Direct API requires the user to pair devices first; Nearby sharing must be configured on both PCs.
Other recipients Microsoft says the recipient need not be a Windows device; receiving steps vary by device. The documented Nearby sharing workflow is for supported Windows PCs.

Which is faster for large files?

Use Wi-Fi when a supported Wi-Fi-based sharing option is available. Microsoft characterizes Bluetooth file sharing as much slower and recommends Wi-Fi for faster transfers of large files. The cited guidance does not provide a benchmark, transfer rate, or time estimate, so actual speed depends on the devices, implementation, radio conditions, drivers, file size, and network setup. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing troubleshooting guidance covers factors that can affect operation.

Can you transfer files without a router or internet?

Bluetooth file sharing works without an internet connection. Wi-Fi Direct can connect two devices without a wireless access point, but using it for a file transfer requires a compatible app or feature that establishes the connection and sends the files.

Do not assume that Windows Nearby sharing’s Wi-Fi option works without a router: Microsoft’s current Windows 11 directions specify that both PCs should be on the same private Wi-Fi network for that path. If that condition is not met, those directions say Nearby sharing uses Bluetooth.

How to send files with Bluetooth in Windows 11

  1. Pair the PCs. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and pair the devices if they are not already paired.
  2. Open Bluetooth File Transfer. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Send or receive files via Bluetooth.
  3. Choose the direction. On the sending PC, select Send files; on the receiving PC, select Receive files. Make sure the receiver is ready before sending.
  4. Select the recipient and files. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose the paired device and transfer the files.

Microsoft describes Bluetooth file sharing as a way to send photos, videos, and documents between devices such as phones, laptops, and PCs. If the Bluetooth file-transfer controls are missing, Microsoft says the PC may not have a Bluetooth adapter or its driver. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth file-transfer instructions.

How to use Windows Nearby sharing instead

Nearby sharing is often the simpler choice when both PCs are supported Windows devices. Enable it on each PC, set who is allowed to share with the device, select a file and use Share, then accept the incoming notification on the receiving PC. For the current Windows 11 Wi-Fi path, both PCs must be connected to the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise, Nearby sharing uses Bluetooth. Microsoft’s setup directions provide the version-specific steps.

Choose the visibility setting that fits the transfer. Selecting My devices only limits sharing to devices signed in with the same Microsoft account; choosing broader visibility can make discovery easier but exposes the device to more nearby senders. Accept transfers only from devices you recognize.

Why is Nearby sharing using Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi?

For the documented Windows 11 Wi-Fi path, check first that both PCs are connected to the same private Wi-Fi network. If they are not, Microsoft says Nearby sharing uses Bluetooth. The app’s transport choice is separate from Wi-Fi Direct’s underlying peer-to-peer technology; the Nearby sharing guidance does not identify its Wi-Fi path as Wi-Fi Direct.

Troubleshoot a transfer that will not start

  1. Confirm compatibility and radios. Make sure both devices support the chosen sharing feature and that Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is enabled as needed. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing guidance lists Bluetooth 4.0 or later with Low Energy support as a requirement.
  2. Check pairing, visibility, and receiver readiness. Pair devices for Bluetooth transfer, ensure the receiver is in receive mode when using Bluetooth File Transfer, and verify Nearby sharing visibility settings on both PCs.
  3. Verify the Wi-Fi condition. For the documented Nearby sharing Wi-Fi route, connect both PCs to the same private Wi-Fi network.
  4. Check drivers and discovery. Update Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers if needed, and check whether network discovery is enabled where applicable.
  5. Keep devices awake and nearby. Power or sleep settings can interrupt a transfer. Microsoft advises keeping devices within about 30 feet (10 meters) for best Nearby sharing operation, especially over Bluetooth.
  6. Check firewall interference. Firewall settings may prevent Nearby sharing from working; review the applicable Windows network and firewall configuration.

If a Bluetooth transfer option is absent, check whether the PC has a working Bluetooth adapter and driver before considering additional hardware. Windows 10 instructions may still describe the feature for supported versions, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; continuing to use that operating system carries a separate security-support concern. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice explains the end-of-support date.
