Bluetooth on Linux has two distinct jobs: BlueZ handles the Bluetooth connection and pairing, while PipeWire and WirePlumber integrate Bluetooth audio into the desktop sound system. A keyboard can pair successfully without involving audio; headphones may connect yet still fail to appear as an output if the audio session has not created or selected the right device node. Troubleshoot those layers in order.

How Bluetooth works on a Linux desktop

BlueZ is Linux’s Bluetooth protocol stack and device-control layer. It supports Classic Bluetooth (BR/EDR) and Low Energy (LE), and Bluetooth controllers can connect through interfaces such as USB, UART, SDIO, or PCIe. Its project overview puts it simply: “BlueZ is the Bluetooth stack that ships with Linux.”

Bluetooth audio adds another layer. PipeWire provides audio endpoints and roles; WirePlumber manages the user audio session and loads BlueZ monitor plugins. Those monitors observe the system-wide BlueZ service and create device and audio-node objects for connected Bluetooth audio and MIDI devices. Pairing therefore confirms a Bluetooth relationship, not that an audio output has been created or selected.

  1. Controller: Does Linux see a Bluetooth adapter?
  2. Bluetooth link: Can BlueZ scan for and pair with the peripheral?
  3. Service or profile: Does the connected device offer the feature you want?
  4. Audio session, when relevant: Does PipeWire/WirePlumber expose the audio node, and is it selected for output or input?

Package names, service-status commands, and graphical controls vary by distribution and release. Use your distribution’s documentation for installation and service-management steps rather than assuming one command applies everywhere.

Pair a device with Bluetooth

For a keyboard, mouse, phone, or audio device, first put the peripheral into its own pairing mode. Then use your desktop’s Bluetooth settings, or use bluetoothctl, BlueZ’s interactive command-line client. The client communicates with the BlueZ daemon over D-Bus and supports BR/EDR and LE controllers.

  1. Open the client: Run bluetoothctl in a terminal. At its prompt, enter list to see available controllers and show to inspect the selected controller. If none appears, skip to the controller troubleshooting section.
  2. Scan: Enter scan on and wait for the target device to appear. The peripheral must be discoverable; names and addresses shown depend on the device. Stop scanning with scan off once you have identified it.
  3. Pair: Enter pair DEVICE_ADDRESS, replacing the example text with the address displayed by the scan. The command’s pairing operation also trusts and connects the device. Follow any prompt shown by the client or peripheral.
  4. Verify: Enter devices or info DEVICE_ADDRESS to inspect the device and connection state. The exact information available depends on the device and BlueZ.

Authentication is not a single universal prompt: the BlueZ pairing agent handles the interaction, and the requested confirmation or passkey depends on the accessory’s capabilities. Follow the prompt shown on both sides. For more command details, see the bluetoothctl manual.

Discoverability and pairability are different

Discoverability controls whether the adapter responds to scans; pairability controls whether it accepts incoming pairing requests. These are not substitutes for putting the remote accessory into pairing mode, and LE scanning has distinct behavior. Enable only the setting needed through your desktop interface or the appropriate BlueZ controls, then turn it off when finished. Avoid leaving an adapter broadly discoverable or pairable longer than necessary. See the bluetoothctl manual and the peripheral’s own instructions.

Why a Bluetooth audio device may connect without sound

Music playback and headset microphone or call use can rely on different Bluetooth audio roles. WirePlumber documents A2DP sink/source, HFP/HSP, and BAP roles. Which role is available and selected depends on the headset, the Linux audio stack, and what each endpoint supports. A successful Bluetooth connection does not establish that the expected audio profile is active.

  1. Confirm the device is connected in Bluetooth settings or with bluetoothctl.
  2. Open your desktop’s sound settings and check whether the headset or speaker appears as an output or input device.
  3. If it appears, select it as the output or input as needed, and inspect the device’s available profile or role if the sound behavior is unexpected.
  4. If it does not appear as an audio device, investigate the PipeWire/WirePlumber audio session and its BlueZ monitor integration; pairing alone does not create that audio node.

Use the WirePlumber documentation for how its monitors integrate BlueZ with the audio session. The exact package names and controls depend on your distribution.

Profiles and codecs: what you can and cannot assume

WirePlumber’s documented codec options include SBC, SBC-XQ, AAC, LDAC, aptX variants, FastStream, and LC3, among others. That list describes configuration possibilities; it does not prove a particular distribution build or a particular headset and computer can negotiate every codec.

Start with the default profile and the capabilities actually offered by the connected device. Change codec settings only to meet a specific supported need. Some features—including mSBC, SBC-XQ, and hardware volume—do not work with every headset and may be enabled according to a hardware quirks database. Consult the WirePlumber configuration documentation before changing settings.

If playback works but the microphone is missing, or sound behavior changes when you enable headset calling, check the active profile and the device’s supported roles. Do not assume a codec setting can add a capability that the headset or installed software does not provide.

Troubleshoot by symptom

No Bluetooth controller appears

This is a controller-detection issue, not a pairing failure. Check whether Bluetooth is enabled in the desktop controls and whether the adapter is visible to the system. BlueZ supports several controller transports, including USB, but that does not guarantee every adapter works with every kernel, firmware, and distribution release. If the machine has no usable built-in controller, a USB Bluetooth adapter for Linux is one possible route; verify compatibility for the specific model, kernel, and firmware before buying.

A controller appears, but scanning finds nothing

  • Make sure the peripheral is actively in pairing or discoverable mode; merely powering it on may not be enough.
  • Check that Bluetooth is enabled and that the correct controller is being used.
  • Try the desktop’s device-discovery controls or bluetoothctl’s scan on, and inspect the output for the device.
  • Remember that discoverability and pairability are different settings, and that scanning behavior can differ for LE devices.

Pairing or authentication fails

  • Put the accessory into pairing mode again and follow its instructions for any passkey or confirmation.
  • Watch for an agent prompt in the desktop or terminal; the interaction depends on the accessory and its capabilities.
  • If the device has stale pairing state, remove the old pairing on both ends when appropriate, then retry.

The device pairs, but audio is absent

Move past BlueZ pairing and check the audio layer: whether PipeWire/WirePlumber has created an audio device, whether the desired profile is available, and whether the desktop has selected the correct output. A Bluetooth connection can succeed while the audio session is not exposing or routing an audio node.

Audio plays, but the microphone or expected sound behavior is missing

Inspect the active audio profile and the endpoint’s capabilities. Music playback and headset-call use can expose different roles, and available codecs or features depend on both endpoints and the installed software. A codec being listed in configuration is not evidence that the connected devices can negotiate it.
