A Bluetooth mouse is a wireless mouse. The useful comparison is Bluetooth versus a mouse that connects through a dedicated USB receiver, often using a 2.4 GHz radio link. Bluetooth pairs with your computer’s Bluetooth radio and can leave a USB port free; a receiver-based mouse needs its matching dongle. Choose based on your device’s support and ports, plus the specific mouse’s performance and compatibility.
What is the difference between Bluetooth and receiver-based wireless?
“Wireless” describes a mouse without a cable; it does not identify one particular connection method. Bluetooth is one kind of wireless connection. In this comparison, “wireless mouse” means a receiver-based model: the mouse communicates with a small USB dongle plugged into the host device.
- Bluetooth: The host must have Bluetooth, and you pair the mouse with it. If the host lacks Bluetooth, a compatible Bluetooth adapter may provide it.
- USB receiver: The mouse needs its matching receiver and a compatible, available USB port. A Bluetooth adapter is not necessarily interchangeable with a mouse’s brand-specific receiver.
- Dual-mode: Some mice support both Bluetooth and receiver-based 2.4 GHz connections. Check the exact model’s specifications and whether its receiver is included.

Which connection is easier to use with your device?
Choose Bluetooth when ports are scarce
A Bluetooth mouse can connect without occupying a USB port for a dedicated mouse receiver. That can be useful with a laptop or tablet that has few ports, or only USB-C ports. Check that the host supports Bluetooth and that the mouse is compatible with it; if an adapter is needed, make sure it works with the host and fits its ports.

Choose a receiver when you need its dedicated connection
A receiver-based mouse can suit a computer without built-in Bluetooth, provided it has a compatible port for the mouse’s matching dongle. If the device has only USB-C ports and the receiver uses another connector, you will need a suitable adapter. A receiver is specific to its mouse system; do not assume a generic Bluetooth USB adapter can replace it.
Consider dual-mode if you may switch
A dual-mode mouse offers Bluetooth and receiver-based operation, which can help when connecting to different hosts or choosing between available ports and connection methods. For example, Xiaomi’s Dual-mode Wireless Mouse 2 supports both modes. Confirm the exact model, supported hosts, receiver inclusion, and connector before buying.

Which is more responsive?
There is no universal answer based on connection type alone. The mouse’s implementation matters, and polling rate is only one part of responsiveness—not a guarantee of total cursor or click latency.
SteelSeries says that its described 2.4 GHz mode can reach polling rates up to 1000 Hz / 1 ms, while it gives Bluetooth a default polling rate of 125 Hz / 8 ms. These are manufacturer-stated mode figures, not universal measurements or end-to-end latency guarantees. The support page does not state a year for the figures. If you play games or use applications where input responsiveness matters, check the specific mouse’s polling-rate specifications and look for reliable independent tests of that model in the mode you plan to use. Do not treat a polling-rate figure alone as a complete latency test.
Can interference or compatibility affect the connection?
Yes. The host’s radio hardware, nearby wireless activity, receiver placement, and the mouse’s own implementation can all matter. Xiaomi notes that Bluetooth performance for its Dual-mode Wireless Mouse 2 can be affected by differences in host Bluetooth modules and heavy nearby 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi interference; it describes that model’s matching receiver mode as relatively stable. This is guidance for that product, not a rule for every mouse.

For a receiver-based mouse, verify that you have the correct receiver and a usable port. For Bluetooth, verify host support and pairing compatibility. When a problem appears, check the connection mode and host compatibility first, then consider the surrounding wireless environment.
Does Bluetooth or a USB receiver give better battery life?
The sources cited here do not establish that either connection type universally lasts longer. Battery life depends on the particular mouse and its specifications, so compare the manufacturer’s battery information for the exact model rather than choosing by connection label.

How should you decide?
- Pick Bluetooth if your host supports the mouse’s Bluetooth mode and avoiding a dedicated USB receiver matters.
- Pick a receiver-based mouse if you have a compatible port and want to use that mouse’s dedicated receiver, or your host lacks Bluetooth.
- Look for dual-mode if you want both options, and verify receiver inclusion and compatibility before purchase.
- For latency-sensitive use, compare the exact model’s mode-specific specifications and independent tests—not just the words “Bluetooth” or “2.4 GHz.”
Before buying, check the mouse’s connection specifications: “wireless” alone does not tell you whether it uses Bluetooth, a USB receiver, or both.
