First check which way the keystrokes need to travel. An app that turns your Android phone into a Bluetooth keyboard for a computer does a different job from a utility that configures a physical keyboard paired with your Android tablet. If you want to type on Android with a separate keyboard, try Android’s built-in pairing and layout settings before installing an app.
Choose the right kind of Bluetooth keyboard app
“Bluetooth keyboard app” can describe two opposite setups. In one, the phone sends keyboard input to another device. In the other, a physical keyboard sends input to Android and an app helps configure its layout or behavior.

These are different workflows, not interchangeable apps. For example, KeyCast’s Google Play listing describes the phone-as-keyboard setup, while External Keyboard Helper Pro describes an input method for physical Bluetooth and USB keyboards. What to check before installing a phone-as-keyboard app
Verify both ends of the connection
Read the listing for the minimum Android version and the receiving device or operating systems it supports. KeyCast’s listing, updated June 27, 2026, says it requires Android 9.0 or higher and a Bluetooth-enabled computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux. Those requirements apply to that app; they are not universal requirements for every Bluetooth keyboard app. KeyCast’s listing.

Also check whether the phone can expose the Bluetooth HID profile—the profile used for keyboard input. The Fulwerks “Bluetooth Keyboard” listing warns that some manufacturers block or disable Bluetooth HID on custom Android builds. That is an app-specific compatibility warning, not a claim about every phone. Check the listing or ask the developer about your exact model before relying on the feature. Look for activation or internet dependencies
An app may need more than Bluetooth. KeyCast’s listing says license verification requires an internet connection and activation uses an access code. If you need offline use, account for that requirement; do not assume other apps use the same licensing model. KeyCast’s listing.

Review permissions, privacy disclosures, and safety warnings
Match permissions to the advertised feature
Google Play policy says sensitive permissions and APIs should be necessary for an app’s core functionality and used for purposes the user has consented to. If a keyboard utility requests a permission that does not seem relevant to its stated feature, pause and look for the developer’s explanation before granting it. Give particular scrutiny to Accessibility access. Google Play’s policy describes disclosure and consent requirements for many uses unrelated to disability and says developers should prefer narrower APIs when possible. Read Data safety and the privacy policy
Android says the Google Play Data safety section provides information about data an app may access and use. Read it alongside the app’s privacy policy, but treat both as disclosures supplied through the listing—not as independent proof that the app’s behavior has been audited. Listing details and developer-provided statements can change. Android privacy settings and permissions.
Take Play Protect warnings seriously, without treating silence as a guarantee
Google describes Play Protect as scanning apps and providing warnings, including warnings involving harmful apps and sensitive permissions. Pay attention to a warning and follow its guidance. Try Android’s built-in settings for a physical keyboard
If your goal is to type on an Android tablet or phone using a separate keyboard, start with Android’s pairing and layout controls. Google notes that some steps in its instructions work only on Android 14 and later, and manufacturers may use different menu names.
- Put the physical keyboard in pairing mode.
- On Android, open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device and select the keyboard.
- To adjust its layout, open Settings → System → Keyboard → Physical keyboard. The exact menus may differ by Android version and manufacturer.
See Google’s instructions for using a physical keyboard with a tablet. If the built-in settings do not offer the layout or behavior you need, then evaluate a hardware-keyboard utility by its supported devices, layouts, setup steps, and permissions.
